And the high-heel predominance just makes the issue worse.  Average US male height:  5' 10".  Average US female height:  5' 4".  By country, the variance is only a few inches in either direction.  Surprisingly, Denmark/Netherlands have the tallest by average, with men at just over 6', and women at 5' 7" on average.  The Shortest averages for men is in Indonesia, at just over 5' 2", and Bolivia for women at 4' 8".

This kind of puts DAZ figures to be (typically) in the 90th percentile for height for women, and around the 50th percentile for men.  Kind of unbalanced...

Add a pair of high-heels on that DAZ female, and suddenly she's 6' 2" or more.  To the average real male (and most of the DAZ Males) that now has him staring her levelly in the chin.....

Yeah, exactly. The small height differential looks a little strange even with flats. But add high heels and things get ridiculous. In a formal setting, with all the women in heels, you can easily end up with a scene in which ALL the women are taller than ALL the men. Which looks really weird.

And, you know, in fantastic settings, women don't need to be tall to be badasses. Tauriel is only 5' 5". Black Widow is only 5' 3". Same for Daenerys. Heck, Buffy is only 5' 2".

Ok, sure, Brienne is 6' 3''. But she's one of kind. If I need a Brienne, I can scale one up. And Ripley (5' 11") is already amply covered by available models.

What I don't need is more models that all end up looking like Brienne of Tarth when I put them in heels. Because that just makes all their dance partners look like Podrick Payne, Tyrion Lannister and Littlefinger by comparison.

Of course, I also did not mean to offend any women of stature by calling them "giantesses". And I humbly beseech such women not to grind my bones to make their bread.

on characters being tall (and speaking as someone who tends to use the height slider a lot and prefers more real world proportions). One thing to consider is That 3d clothing tends to be bulkier than its real world equivalent would be.  Its nigh impossible to model things less than millimeters apart, and multiple layers of things less than millimeters apart and then weightmapped to not intersect ever is... no. So 3d clothing is visually wider than what we expect and can thus be unflattering, there are really 2 ways to counteract this make characters skinnier or make them taller which makes them look narrower in proportion

One thing I like about Rune is that she's definitely the oldest Daz lady. She's definitely past 30, combine that with the aging morphs that come with the Gen3 head morphs and she can range from, lets say, around 35-45.

Given that there's basically nothing between 20's and Old. She definitely helps fill the void of actual middle aged characters (have you noticed in a lot of those looking for middle aged character threads a lot of the suggestions are for characters who look closer to 60+? Until we start living past 120, thats not really middle age, now is it)

And for some pictorial evidence here's Rune and Rune+Aging morphs (and makeupless for all the folks who like that)

Interesting insight - I never considered the clothing aspect. Wait, does that mean the males tend towards short then? Also, I thought Mei Lin did mature features pretty well (and had an amazing skin) but obviously she wasn't uh not asian skin toned.

    Fun list of heights:
    - Teen Josie: 5'4.7
    - Mei Lin: 5'7
    - Bethany: 5'8
    - Arabella: 5'8.5
    - Izabella: 5'9 (not really a real world figure)
    - Olympia: 5'9.3
    - Victoria 7: 5'10
    - Victoria 4.2: 5'10.5 (c/o Richard)
    - Eva: 5'11
    - Gia: 5'11
    - Karen: 5'11
    - Rune: 5'11

I thought that Olympia looked taller than Rune and Gia looked shorter in that earlier comparison render, so that's interesting.

Again, a few female characters being really tall, especially the Warrior Queen, makes perfect sense. What's weird is that ALL of them are far above average height with zero options below or even at the average. The height slider doesn't give that much range, and it does matter because all of the environments (and the males) are built to real world scale - they aren't just "whatever you decide they are."

By the way, the English woman with the Eastern city I was alluding to earlier was Ninive 6, which is an appropriate invocation given the topic of Dark Age English-themed characters.

After playing with the various ways to gain discounts (wow, that's a lot of work lol) and adding in my platinum coupon I ended up with the pro bundle for $39 plus change.  After spending the afternoon thinking about it and looking at the various images and items, she honestly most closely fits the type of art I like to do, which is fantasy warrior types so the battle armours are a bonus (I will have to work around the skimpware although I am not completely opposed to occaisionally doing a skimpware fantasy piece just for the iconic fun of it.

Any renders of her without makeup; warrior stuff; and definitely not wearing anything provided in the packs?

Here you go, finally.  My render settings had gotten all fouled up because I change the contrast all the time.  All afternoon, my renders have been being too dark and DS has been slow.  When I had the sense to reset the defaults and go from there, all was well.  This is w/normal maps on (w/o normal maps, you don't see the lip detail as much or the neck muscles) and medium translucency.  It rendered to 70%, @ high quality settings, and I thought it was ok.

The lights are from the Painter's Lights pack.  Those work very well w/Rune's skin, for some reason.

Why do the heights bother everyone so much? In general, all of the characters and props are built to the same scale so it generally doesn't matter much. Especially since the "real world" is whatever you define in your scene.

FWIW, I'm 5'9" (male) and most of the young women I work with are =/- two inches of my height. By young, I mean recent college graduates. Most of the young men are my height or taller.

Agreed. It's 3D and with a couple of sliders you can make them any size you want.

I am 6'1 and my ex wife was 5'10. (6'2/3 with heels). I used to love the looks I got when we went out to clubs, LOL.

I went ahead and got both the blood red outfit and the fantasy barbarian outfit since both of these totally fit with the kind of images I like to do. Plus knowing that vendors see immediate sales as a sign that the addon is doing well, I wanted to support the vendors towards making MORE outfits like this.

i did pass on Rune since I usually feel addon characters are pretty pointless when I can come close with morph packs myself, but obviously I am in the minority since they keep pumping them out, LOL.

I believe Cassius Dio describes her as tall, with tawny hair hanging down to below her waist, a harsh voice and a piercing glare.

Hmmm... Cassius Dio was born app. 100 years after Boudicca's uprising. But tawny or not - I could imagine that she didn't look and behave like a Barbie doll.

As a noted historian, he worked from refernces and other's reports, as most historians do. We're born almost two thousand years after her uprising and we're discussing her hair colour and skin tones today, using, like Cassio Dio, someone else's reports. wink

Riftwitch didn't understand why people were referring to red hair when, "according to Roman accounds, Boudicca had a dark complexion and hair". I was merely pointing out a roman historical refrence that mentioned "tawny" hair.

    -- Walt Sterdan

I looked up tawny in the dictionary, and I've been wrong all these years about what color it is. I don't know why I thought it was some shade of brown. At any rate, Rune is on her way to my runtime, so maybe I can play with her tomorrow.

I was pleasantly surprised at the outfits - no chainmail bikini (I can accept the leather bikini), no high-heeled sandals with leg armor -- someone has been making note of our assorted complaints.

I really like that she's a bit more realistic and not so "perfect" in her beauty. She has a little more of the "real world" beauty and that's very appealing for realistic renders. I'd love to get her but she's way out of my budget. So for now I'll just have to enjoy her via you guys' renders and hope it won't be ages before she goes on a more drastic sale. Until then, please keep the Rune renders coming! :D I'd love to see more of her.

Well, its not tawny colored hair.... This is the elven outfit, not in the bundle, but it fit the hair. which is fantasy warrior hair, also not in the bundle lol.  But it fit her I thought. Love the texture of her skin and she looks very much like a real person.  Great imperfections.

She does look good. Nice render Ice Dragon. I reckon this morph is going to be pretty versatile. That hair suits too. Is it the same one used in the Blood Red Promo (only blonde)?

Thank you and I have no idea lol.  I've had this hair for a while and thought it would look good on her.  I don't believe I got the hair here though....

Rune is a great morph to add to the library. I'd say her height is about the same issues surrounding male vs female outfits and skimpwear vs practical wear. In the end you go with what sells. At least DS gives us height and scaling options. I end up buying all of Daz'z base figures because I've never been dissapointed after giving any of them a chance on the render front. This is worth it for me just for the discount on the male counterpart. Seeing the figure comparison render posted earlier highlights how varied the different base figure morphs really are. I'd like to see that comparison with all the figures in the same pose and wearing the same hair and outfit (angelreaper?). :)

just doing a render for you of all the base g3f except for girl7 don't have her, then I'll do one of just the ladies in the rune7 pro bundle with same pose hair and bikini maybe it was the different poses but it did look like the three of them were different heights in that one lexi looked slightly taller than rune but that maybe the hair too but isa looks a lot taller and she's leaning over. may take awhile though lot of characters in first pic and have to go to work soon. they're all in same pose hair and bikini, no lights or makeup just the iray legacy maps

Looking forward to the base figure lineup.

some of them I posed a little too close couple feet/hands crash into each other but to get them all in couldn't be helped it's kinda like a roller coaster looking at them standing next to each other with their heights and builds there is actually a size difference to them all and even though didn't use any hd morphs if you look at rune there is fair bit of detail in muscle and veinage like her feet also again in this shot too she is tanned though in another tried real closeup not so so that's lighting and perspective guess but she does appear more athletic muscle build than eva or gia again this is without hd morphs only have hd morphs for vic and mei lin but if I did have all the hd morphs may really enhance more probably be a lot of vein and muscle tone in rune

The normal maps make a lot of difference, with the body detail.  :-)  Not as much detail as HD, I guess, but it's there.

That's a shame.  It makes a world of difference, especially w/the DAZ Originals.  :-)  And more and more items are becoming DAZ Originals.
