Thank you! :) I always do some sharpening and level/color correction in my images, some need a little most postwork than others but that's the main actions in all of my renders. Unfortunately I don't have an NVidia card so all of my renders in DS come out grainy so I also have to use some denoise, so they get softer than I want them to :( I think that's what's giving them the more illustrated look.
Here's the straight render and the postworked.
P.S. Forgot to add the magical dodge tool, it definately helps to give it that look. I use it for some highlights om the hair and skin.

At the risk of wandering OT again -- does the video card affect render quality? I have an AMD, and it bites to use the Aux window because the update gets slow sometimes. But I thought CPU renders were the same as renders made w/an NVidia card. Is that not right? (I'm debating more memory versus new video card, and have been for months now.) :-)
As far as I know there's no quality difference between the GPU and CPU renders. It's just a matter of how much time it takes. It's not long that I got my AMD, but if I'd known I'd start using DS so much I'd absolutely go for the NVidia option.

Yes, me, too. If I'd known about IRay and NVidia when I got this rig, I'd have gotten a different video card, too. Now I wonder if installing a new card might not void the warranty. But anyway, thanks, again. :-) I thought it was fine to render w/CPU -- just not as fast.
Back to Monochrome -- I thought I'd never get the right look for this one -- and after I posted it, I saw a lighting change I'd like to make. Render and learn, I guess.
Monochrome is a challenge, but I like it. :-)

I have an Nvidia card....but it's 2 yr old, so not the latest and most powerful. GeForce GTX 760 which has 3GB memory I think. I get decent render times with Iray, but it depends on hair and size of textures too.

Just discovered this guy through another thread, and he does excellent tutorials. If i wasn't broke, I'd have his products right now. Trust me they are on the wish list and will be mine sooner rather than later.

I love the scenes. Only thing is, I feel like I'm cheating a bit if I use them. I have no idea why; that's what they're there for.
Thanks for the info Seeker. Every now and then I want a more illustrated look and ahve a ahrd time getting it. Really more of a 2d illustrated than a comic book look.
Yes, you can render your scenes in color. There are manual settings to change from black and white.
Loading one of the light preset "scenes" will render in color, but there are 6 presets, (3 low contrast, 3 high contrast), that will set everything up to render black and white. If you change your mind and want to go back to color - or to render with a hint of color - simply go to the Render Settings pane > Tone Mapping and change the saturation valu anywhere from 0.xx to 1.0 and you should be able to manipulate the results as you desire. So, very little manual tweaking necessary. :) Since the lights are set to look best in B & W, you may need to tweak their values if you choose to go back to color. It's all in the look you want to obtain, but it is a very useful and versatile set. :)

Yes, once you click on one of the render settings of High/Medium/Low Quality located under either High Contrast or Low Contrast, it changes the Iray environment settings from 'Dome and Scene' to 'Scene Only', and the Tone Mapping Saturation down to 0.00. (It also will change the Burn Highlights and Gamma depending on if you use High Contrast or Low Contrast as well.)
I'd figured out the Saturation part, but didn't know how the Contrast was changed. I always change the Contrast using settings from another product. Well, not always, but if I wanted in-between for a color render. Good to know all this. :-)

My first experiment with Colm's lighting. I added a yellow hue to one of them which might look a bit weird on the hair, but I like things a bit arty... It is also my first experiment with Rune and I added morphs from Handspan's Genesis 3 morphs 3...

Re Monochrome:
While it is nice to be able to render in monochrome, the rendering controls / options for monochrome are really limited within Studio. You will need to do postwork if you want anything more than a simple desaturated render.
I think the thing that is really great about Colm's items is that they are a complete package that you can get good results with straight out of the box :)

I always tend to like the black and white versions better... I have only experimented with like 0.0001% of the lighting sets, but I'm really liking them so far. And thanks to watching Colm's videos, I learned about creatind a small AUX viewport to see the lighting in real time. That was one of those most confusing things to me...

The Aux viewport is an amazing tool that I'm happy to have in my back pocket now thanks to Colm bringing it to my attention. I never got into the Nuts n Bolts of all DS can do, but learn bit by bit when someone presents it to me.

thank you yes the lighting really helps as well as the cove backdrop tried this scene with a theatre and stage but this setup was much better
she is very versitile Wonderland, like the lighting highlights in her hair in both renders and the backdrops make her stand out
