A good Monochrome (B&W) render is still going to be composed and lighted for monochrome. Mono is used to set mood and is very editorial.

The tutorial is really good about showing all the TYPES of lights used for Mono Photography. After that just pick the ones that do what you want. Some have controllers to easily be repositioned, with the rest fixed but still moveable if needed for a special effect.

The render settings are Mono, High Contrast and also a Bloom option that "glows" the white areas.

Colm does such a good job explaining things in the tutorial and while this is one of the most expensive items next to characters, I am sure this and his regular studio will be used by me for at least half of my renders!

Thanks again Colm for this and the other studio lights package.

Here you go Tobor... Color was stopped just a bit early as was High Contrast.

    The lights make the scene...

Second BW uses the High Contrast version of the render Presets.

    Thanks. This helps greatly!

When I worked in a photo studio in the mid 70s in North Hollywood, we'd do these high contrast head shots for actors. Depending on the type of roles they were going after, some really wanted the high-key look. So we'd overlight, pick a high contrast paper filter, and play other darkroom exposure tricks. Often took forever to have it come out right. I see it's now all automated!

Thanks! The color version looks pretty good, too. Could you briefly mention the character skin texture and skin shader, or are they custom?

Here are the gallery links.  I have the products listed in these.  :)  For the female, all I did was change the SSS color to a more red rather than orange undertone.  :)  The rest is out of the box on both.

    I'll oblige. smiley

Please remember this isn't one of the included scenes.  It's just me, getting crazy with lights, after I watched the video.

Maybe I should watch it again. laugh  My shadows are over the top.

That still looks nice in color, but I think I like the B&W one better.  It has a really nice spooky tone to it that the color version doesn't.  Of course, that might be because it reminds me of all of the old B&W movies I used to watch on late night tv as a kid, too.  wink

Thank you! smiley  I like the black/white version, too.  In the video, CJ shows the effect of the background glancing light, and for some reason, I loved that glancing light effect.

So I used the glancing light and a low, low intensity rim light as the only lights.

It is so fast and easy to try a key light and then delete and use a different one if needed.

As for surfaces I just use iray materials that come with the models and clothes and hair. I do pick dark lipstick and may drop some of the specular.

where'd you get the ciggie from? I keep looking around for a good cigar and cigarette prop to use on G3.

And one more.  :)  Smoke is post - everything else is straight render.

I have always grabbed Colm's light sets at Rdna, here I will have to bide my time til I'm in a better place financially...but HECK YEA they are definitely good light sets. Honestly, I grab almost every light set I can get my grubby paws on, (and there's so many awesome sets here at Daz... I'm slowly collecting my way through them) because they are all varied and unique, and help add variety to lights.
I've made several of my own HDRI lights - just simple ones- and several mix and match presets for quick personal use, but seriously do love the work put into Colm's sets, and the options and everything. I really do.. the functionality is amazing. :)

Well, it's not a 'skirt', but he looks man enough even if it was!  Great render.

Doing a high quality wet look and it is looking amazing! Will share when it is done.

This one did really well! Initial color was not nearly this good!

The drops and drips are shiny, the material looks great. Good Hi-Res with just a couple of lights. Really am having fun with this set!

Think I will call it "Cold Wet Hearts"!

Those renders are exceptional!  I use CJ's lights most of the time, too.

Sometimes I'll add an environment, just for variety.  Or other touch-ups.  But yeah -- there's a light for every occasion in render studio.

Thanks Jan19, I love them so much. I always get a good result with them. Colm also has some tutorials on youtube, I learned a lot of things about lighting!

I have to say of all of them, my favs are the girl on the couch in front of the blinds projector light and the guy at the end with the wrinkled shirt and fedora hat.  Very cool.

    Yes I used: http://www.daz3d.com/genesis-3-female-s-wet-body-iray

I had it in my gallery too but it is gone... I guess the wet fabric violates TOS... you know the fabric material comes that way from the PA!

Have to redo it with the "dry" material.

I had it in my gallery too but it is gone... is this violating terms... I swore I saw topless renders.

I think you have to cover up...um, what's a good word...oh, shoot, you can't show nipples, I don't think. blush  Can I even say that on the forum?

Anyway, that means I gotta make my current render a little more modest. :-)  I was gonna show 'em on my next render, too.

But you have to cover anything that's normally covered by a bikini.  I believe I read that somewhere.

You're welcome, and thanks for the tip about the tutorials! :-)

I don't know about you all, but I'm finding these monochromes require more concentration than color renders.

    Love your Artwork!

Are you doing post work to get the "illustrated" look to them?

Just wanted to say thank you Colm for your Iray monochrome product.

For a while now I have been doing normal colour renders and then changing them to black and white in a separate photo application. Somehow the result was not quite right. Now along comes your amazing monochrome render product and the lighting is truly awesome. My renders are now beginning to look just like the Hollywood photo examples you have used in the promos.

Also your YouTube instructional video, and the included pdf booklet with the product, was very informative.

This is going to give me months of render enjoyment.

Thank you for all the work you put into making this product. It was well worth the price....and more.

    Cheers smiley

Yes, and in some poses -- and with some characters -- NOT using real anatomy looks rather weird.  I think I'm wandering OT, though, so will wisely hush.
