Thanks Jan, the nice thing is the package does have so many different options and that his scenes will all give a different look to what you would expect to be a boring black and white :) :)

I just saw an image made with this set in the gallery, and I do see what you mean. :-)  That image wasn't stark black and white at all.

Yes, lots of options, I love it.  Can use the preset scenes or do your own, it's completely up to the user!!

Thanks for the comments Jan and Tobor!

You're welcome.  I just watched the video on the product page.  Very interesting, the only thing missing is Hozier. smiley

I wondered what this could offer that the base Render Studio didn't.  Seems it offers a lot.  It's at the top of my to-get list.

I'm starting to think I won't be using any other iray lights other than Colm's. LOL. The new "Monochrome" one is brilliant!

Did this one the other day. So excited to be able to do b&w, and vintage/retro type renders within DS.

I saw your render and started to think that maybe I was underestimating the Monochrome set.  Then I watched the video on the product page and was sure of it. :-)

    That's a very good render.

No postwork.  I did change the saturation to .25 in the Tone Mapping. :)  Wanted a hint of color....

Great renders guys!  Yep, it offers a lot, and I wouldn't underestimate what it can do.  After all, it's from Colm and you can't beat that!

I often convert my renders later in Photoshop to B&W but this seems to really capture that stark noir look that I like. I usually don't get things at the introductory price that are so expensive, but after seeing the video, in my cart it goes! OMG, I wish I had found his videos earlier, they are great and explain so much to new DS users! Also I see it has camera presets for portraits/close ups which I have been missing from Poser. Is there a way to put that permanently in the main UI with the other cameras so I don't have to search for it each time? Also, has anyone tried merging another set with Colm's lights, replacing the back wall with a preset bedroom or living room?

That tutorial, plus the sample renders I've seen, sold me.  I didn't think I'd have much use for a monochrome set, but this one seems exceptional.  I don't have to adjust curves in PShop anymore, because I can get good shadows and highlights, with the Monochrome lights.

A quickie -- I brought a little color back into this one (I like tints), added some contrast in Daz Studio, and rendered.  The sig is the only postwork.

Not sure what's happening here but the Specular Eyelight light from the premade scene from Colm's newest offering is putting a blackout circle in front of Dawn's face.  WTH?  I tried using the light as a regular light, even changed the shape from disk to sphere.  Not sure what's going on.  At this distance I don't think a specular highlight can really be scene in Dawn's eyes but just knowing this weird thing is happening ... thought I'd post in case he or anyone else can help me troubleshoot this.  I've turned off the light and the issue goes away so yes, it's the light!

    Thank you

    Rich

i thought you made a wall with hole to put the head through for photos

Most of my "modern" clothes and hair is 20-50s retro so finally with Monochrome I can easily dress, pose, light and render!

    First 2 quickies here...

I forgot I like women in hats!

    Those are great jazzybear.

I've always liked tinted versus monochrome, but the b/w images I'm seeing in this thread are beginning to change my mind. smiley

Monochrome can be gorgeous, and so striking!

This definitely looks like a winner. I will need to pick this up when I get the funds.

I had to juggle the old budget. smiley  But Colm's lights are usually extraordinary.

I think I'm hooked on black and white, and I never really liked b/w before.  One can surely pile on the drama.

You guys are blowing me away with these images and jan I love the contrast setting in yours.  Very moody.

JazzyBear, love your ladies with hats, especially the closeup one!

Thanks, sapat!  :-)  I used the High Contrast & High Quality render setting.  These monochrome renders go surprisingly fast, even at high quality.

All in all, this is an encouraging set of lights.  I was in sort of a rut, but b/w opens a whole new playing field.

    Thanks Sapat!

I like the first the best and need to do more tight renders in color and BW with the new iray quality as it holds up.

The second was more about some opacity of lace on the dress and just a hint of light on the brim, but enough to cast a shadow under the brim on the hair. BTW the "dirty concrete" comes with the Mono set from Colm and there are several textures included plus the "use you own" option.

I love the lace on that dress too.  I got it for $2.00 yesterday cuz I bought one of her pose sets.  What a bargain eh? I like how you changed out the floor and yes, you can use your own for sure!

That dress set has poses that match some nice sets, so I didn't even have to pose the dress over the leg, just slide a dial!

  • And one more.  :)  Smoke is post - everything else is straight render.

    Looking good!

For those posting their monochromes from Colm's new package, how about also posting a quick standard color render. Would be nice to see how the two compare.

One of the presets I will call it "Euro Buzzcut".

Here you go Tobor... Color was stopped just a bit early as was High Contrast.

    The lights make the scene...

Second BW uses the High Contrast version of the render Presets.

  • Great images.  :)

  • Here's the first one.  Just opened the scene and turned the Saturation back up to "1".
