Really, really? Just give us DS 5.0 for godsake! XD
Well, I mean, they DID say they were updating some stuff with Connect and all, much to my anticipation, actually. But still, the numeral incrimination of all these updates to DS4 is starting to make me laugh.

just wait, in a year we will be on 4.9.9.8.7.6.5.4.3.2.1 !!
Who cares, we get a big ass sale to go with it so YAY! 50% off Daz Originals and several really great vendors products. If they keep doing this kind of thing and they can call it 4.9.9.9.9 for all I care! heheh
ZBrush has been at version 4 for years, too.
I suspect the next major release will be DS 4.10, given that this release is mostly about polishing the new features of 4.9, a point release number was deemed appropriate.
I recall someone at DAZ once saying that DS 5.0 would arrive with major changes to underlying SDK's, ie would likely break a number of existing plug-ins. When that might happen is anyone's guess, it could be years away.
I'm guessing we will see a DS 5 when (if) they make significant changes to the SDK. Right now, most plugins work without being recompiled, and the ones that do need to be recompiled do not require a lot of changes (if any). At least, that seems to be a big driver in version jumps in the past. And I'm fine with the current x.y.z format. We can actually glean some information from it, unlike if marketing completely took over.
I'm guessing wildly here when we get daz 5 there will be two versions a free stanard version that's basicly advanced version of this one with a few extra features and a more professional advanced pay for version that includes built in new updated versions of hexgaon, bryce and carrara allowing you to create and share your own content instead of using other programs like zbrush
Even at version 4.9.2, Daz Studio can still inspire new fantasy and fairy tales :)
Those programs being merged into Daz Studio i think is about as likely as everything in the daz empire becoming free forever
But i do like the idea of a paid version of daz studio, with some more features. I would be one to buy the paid version, especially if it came with the HD morph features that PA's get.
They tried the paid version a few years ago and there were lots of complaints about it then they reverted back to this format.
If they are rewriting Hexagon then they could consider merging it in, though Lightwave has two separate programs, so they could just rebrand Hegxagon to DS Modeler. Both Hexagon and Bryce would need to be updated to 64-bit. It sounds like that might happen for Hexagon, but I do not know if there has been any confirmation on that. I do not think we have heard anything about updates to Bryce and converting it 64-bit would be a herculean effort. I don't see DAZ investing time and resources into integrating either. I think they best we will see are improvements to the Hexagon bridge (and maybe a 64-bit Hexagon). Myabe if we are really lucky, some improvements to the Bryce bridge. But I think DAZ would be better off improving Carrara.
The trouble with a paid version, is that DAZ then has twice as many versions to test, worry about compatibility with etc. Far better to make those additional pay features optional paid products, and stick with a single version of DS.
DS always had a free version available, even when there were paid-for versions (DS3 Advanced, and then DS4 Advanced and Pro).
DAZ didn't go back to "all free" because of complaints, they decided to make DS4 Pro version free so that more people would adopt Genesis: with the free Pro version all the content creators now had the tools needed to create Genesis content, and all the end-users had autofit so they could reuse their old content.
my reasoning is just that 5 has to something special compared to 4 as they've been stretching out 4 for awhile now and have can they keep stretching out updated versions of 4.9, then there is their other programs that haven't been updated in a long time even though there many hoping they would and with so much competition out there now both paid and free that many use to create content to use in daz it'd make sense for daz to offer something of an all in one version of the program to get a good percetage of the content creation market they could even have a version based on the vue product where you can buy/unlock the creation aspects you want and the free version being just the bare bones basicly more improved version of 4.9 without the custom content creation abilities so long as it was subscription based I'd buy pro version and it wasn't expensive
The PA's get the same version of Studio that we get... no added features that I know of. The HD morph creation doohickie thing-a-ma-jig is a tool only available to Daz vendors, and while it might work together with Daz Studio, it is not integrated.
Either way, that is one thing that i am sorely missing in Daz Studio. It wouldnt be so bad if the genesis base meshes were not such a low resolution, it really limits how much custom detailed sculpting can be done. But that ability to export and reimport at higher resolutions would be useful for other things aswell, not just genesis figures.
When Poser 11 was announced and included the ability to sculpt in HD with the morph brushes, along with subdivided meshes through GoZ, i considered going back to Poser for that ability. But that is a choice between Genesis 3 and those HD features, and genesis 3 with all its content support wins that battle for me. I also figured that since it happened in Poser, Daz would eventually add that support in Daz Studio as well, even if i had to pay for it. Fingers crossed that its not just wishful thinking
Network Rendering? Luxrender has it and takes seconds to set up the second computer up as a 'lux-slave'. I see Cloud but nothing for Home network...or documention to explain it out. KISS Keep it Simple S____.
Oh jeeeeeez, my heart has just re-started! Did a manual install of 4.9.2.70 and all went well until the CMS part. Which just stopped. Unless in excess of 10 minutes is usual? So cancelled install and, of course, I ended up with no DS at all! ;) Tried again and got an error over a file (forget which), which I told the install to igore and same thing. Checked Task manager and I had (now) 2 CMS install processes still running. So cleared all that up, tried again (3 times the charrm, right? Nope, not for me ..) Tried the install file on my little laptop and it wnet through (hell and blast, not a corrupt install - despite the non-ASCII chars in the EULA).
Shut down main laptop and waited. Did a virus scan on restart (all clear) and before trying again looked at Services and found the CMS active. I shut that down and fired of the installer and ... all went through. Fresh boot or shutdown CMS or both? Not a clue! :)
Small aside: small laptop is WIn 8.1 and it decided that the DCC installer was 'unkown and fishy' whilst the main installer wasn't ... go figure! ;)
Carrara hs this ability and it works really well.
DS has the 'Bridge' to connect to Iray networking but I don't see them including network rendering itself, for the same reason 3Delight specifically excludes it's own network rendering from DS.
P.S. The 'Iray Server' is the networking product and its already available to buy from nVidia. It's so easy to use, it didn't need any documentation!
Thankfully this is not DS 5.0, that would have been outrageous if so with the lack of new features. I expect something big for DS 5.
Anyway I'm still using DS 4.7 as main version and 4.8 as Beta.
Given the mess the last upgrade made of my Categories in the content library, I'll probably pass on this one for a while.
But that's the thing, with Luxrender, the whole networking was part of the deal and so was the documention. I see a feature here in Studio...I don't have a guide how to use it, the online documentation here at Daz comes up dead. If the product is integrated with all the drop down menus and boxes to be filled in here with Studio, why go to Nvidia for support? It's quite clear the Engineers know or knew what they were doing when they programed it into Studio. so why not go the rest of the way and document it's use? "I built a rocket, I know how it works, but I'll let you figure it out." Documentation is the cornerstone of a product, and Daz has excelled at keeping well behind the curve on this issue. ie. while Studio 4.9.1 was the flagship. The online documention reflected 4.6. Hardly Iray support.
It may be easy for you to figure out, but we come from different paths. Example, I retired from JAG so I suspect our experiences and frame of mind are exceedingly different.
I have no idea what DS5 will bring, but in some ways I would expect a lower key release as they will be (presuambly) changing the SDK (and possibly the Qt version) and will want to have all of that working before adding new stuff - as they have in the major (4.x) versions of DS4. Of course 4.0 gave us weight-mapping so maybe 5.0 will also have a big feature, as I said I have no idea.
I just installed it everything seems ok
I'm not sure what else DAZ can do with that, except to say 'use the Username, Password and Address from your account on the Iray Server'. Only if they start selling the server will they need to document it.
... and they have enough trouble keeping up with their own documentation before they start documenting other peoples programs.
Well, I like the new install panel. It was much easier to find the things I just bought, Sometimes it was a bit slow with all the obtaining data from Daz, but still it was way better than having to write all the items I bought down and then searching for them in the store.
Is there a way to search for something if you are not sure if you installed it? I bought the Bend Controls for genesis 3 male, but I didn't remember seeing it in the panel. Maybe it was there and I installed it without remembering later. Sometimes it can be a bit frustrating when you buy something and install it and then you can't find it in Studio. I searched for it in the install panel, but nothing was found. Maybe that's because it was already installed.
Installed products won't show up in the "Install" tab, which is really just a specialized view for smart content that makes it easier to find things that need to be installed.
If you go to your normal smart content product view, uncheck "Filter By Context" and use the search bar you should be able to find it by name without a problem. The software team fixed that up so that the search on products works like a person would expect instead of how a database thinks it should work.
So how do I get it?
It's not in the DIM and there's no on-site download link. None that I can find at least.
4.9.2 has been a nightmare for me downloaded it installed well I thought it did started DS then sceen went like this.
tried for an hour couldn't get it to work. Checked what version I was using and it was the old one not 4.9.2 so where did it go ?
It must have wipped out my config for DS so downloading again, man it's slow it will take 6Hrs to download why so slow.
I'm going to bed grrrrrrr!
