...yeah, I'm greedy for all the memory I can get. If it means 99% of the time my render jobs will not dump to CPU mode, it will be worth it.
If the new technology ia really to be more efficient and faster, two HBM 2 GP series GPUs should be able to match up pretty well against 4 current generation Titan-Xs with regards to overall render performance That is a huge bonus as it would mean less waste heat and power consumption.
The x10 increase was using what was discribed as "CEO Maths", so I think we can assume it was a considerable over estimate for real world usages. 2-3 X speed increase is probably more realistic
The 10 times has been nvidia marketing talk. They added up the single improvement like bandwith and compute to state it will be roughly 10 times more efficient at deep learning compute tasks. But thats not how it works for actual performance. If your hard disk drive is two times as fast and your cpu is two times as fast it's not a four times faster system.

"it messing up quoting"
Hence the wait and see. Theoretical performance is like being told to 'trust me'; makes me suspicious.
Not so good news. I found this on the Nvidia Advanced Rendering Forum on May 10 from Carschten on Iray support with the 1080:
"Its not yet supported, but we are working on it since quite some time, so that compatible versions will be released as soon as possible."
I keep going back forth reading all these various threads on the pro and cons of the 1080 since this is all over my head been trying to decide on my new computer one maxed out with 32gb memory+4 drives (one ssd at least) + 2 titans or a more powerful/more upgradable one that has 64gm memory+2 drives (again at least one ssd) + has a 5 bay hotswap drive bay to add more when I can afford + 2 1080 cards making the price close to the first pc it also has a lower bay to add extra cooling or another 24 drives. Decide on one then the other basing on whether or not these 1080s are worth it. oh the first pc also has the option of two 1080s too which makes it a lot cheaper but again if they're good enough for really good quality renders with lots of characters/objects in them as well as any creation programs thinking about zbrush and some others still either 1080s or titans still better than my current aspire v17 nitro with its gtx 850m card at least there are a few of you talking about this and no all about this stuff though it goes over my head hopefully soon can work out which setup I go for
To throw more fun stuff at you to ponder, we all know a 1080ti or Titan Pascal chip exists, so it just a matter of when and exact specs. Here is an editorial suggesting what the 1080ti could be.
http://wccftech.com/nvidia-gtx-1080-ti-pascal-gp102/
This site was pretty spot on with 1080 and 1070 rumors, even calling the 8 pin power connector (that freaked so many on this forum out who said such a thing was IMPOSSIBRUUUU!!!) so I think they may be more correct than incorrect on these potential specs. So before anyone screams about this link, remember they were right before.
In other news, 3dMark benchmarks for the 1070 have leaked, and it actually does beat the Titan X, at least in this bench. That's pretty amazing for a $380 card. However, an AMD benchmark has also leaked, showing they have <something> that can also beat the Titan X (the cards are not known.) Now, it is important to think about what AMD is doing, because they have gone on record stating they will compete HARD at the $330 price point. AMD does not have a card that can compete with the 1080 YET. So this benchmark has to be something else, and that something could be the 1070 competitor. AMD has forced Nvidia to react in the recent past. The GTX 960 had 2gb and 4gb varients. In response to AMD's cheaper card with more memory and performance, Nvidia killed the 2gb version and dropped the 4gb version to the price that the 2gb version had been. So something like that could happen again if it turns out AMD has a card cheaper than the 1070 that is very close in performance. Competition is great!
Of course none of this directly addresses what we care about here, iray. But it would be pretty insane to exclude iray from the consumer cards, or gimp it purposely. Many, many people use iray to create images using GTX cards, not just enterprise stuff. It would be beyond foolish, as there are other rendering engines out there besides iray. While GTX is obviously gamer centric, Nvidia is not dumb enough to kill off a major PC segment: the Indie Developer. That could be an animator, a game maker (both 2d and 3d,) or graphic artist. There are many professionals in these fields who do not use enterprise cards due to the costs associated with them. The Indie segment is massive, and probably growing more than any other (Just like at Steam.) And like I said before, Nvidia is making a whole new iray product, Iray VR. They also just pushed out iray for Rhino. They have not forgot about iray. The 970/980 received iray updates less than one month after release. (Release Sep 18, 2014, driver update ~Oct 10, 2014.) So, if you can wait 1 month, then wait. And like I said above, AMD could push Nvidia on pricing as well. If the specs look hot and the 480 is just $330, Nvidia might just drop their price before they even launch the 1070.
Now, I wont jump and say iray would get the same 2.5X performance that VR can with Pascal, there are software developments that could factor in a performance jump beyond just what the hardware specs alone would show. Again, just note there is no reason to gimp iray when there is competition, especially competition that can run on AMD.
And as for OC potential, I'm sure it will be ok. While Nvidia is using just 8-pin connectors in their 1st party Founder's (Reference) card, 3rd party vendors almost certainly will use more for OC purposes, along with better cooling solutions. Do NOT buy a Founder's Edition card!!!!! You would be paying a big premium for no reason at all. Just wait until the vendors get their cards out.
I can't wait for those cards to be available and for someone to post some actual results for Iray in Daz Studio. I'm assuming they will work straight up and driver updates are about getting the best out of them?
iray is my render of choice and seeing as I'm buying iray specific products here do not want to give it up. Most retail stores here sell prebuilt computers that though the bill as high powered gaming machines other types bill as basic intros even though I'm not very smart when it comes to understanding computers even I know these are not that powerful and still basic. From places that do offer custom builds or sell parts there aren't that many options most best cards they offer gtx 980ti and some don't even have that let alone titans not many found offer those and then they scimp in other areas though not the price. Did find one place offered 3 different titan options including hybrid so they'll probably have 1070/1080s when released don't know if any others will like I said not many offer titans. The place that sells the two customs I listed the 32gb memory one can have two cards several ones offered including titans, 1070, 1080 and k6000, the 64gb powerhouse can have up to 4 cards though no k6000. Even offering 4 1070s or 4 1080s of course these offerengs were made before and real info was known of the 1070/80s including the fact you cannot have use 4 1070/80s in sli or three of them except via a special key unlock and even then and same thing with the price there are prices listed to have these new cards added to the builds and hasn't changed still cheaper than titans but unkown if price is still to high or about right or whether it'll go up or down when they are offically released in Australia though from many Australian reports it's still going to be fairly high and not as cheap as we were told at least not here once you factor in all the various costs and taxes added but again still cheaper than titans should be just not as cheap as we were told to be. Oh as to which versions they are no idea and those next versions you mentioned being on the way same thing don't know if they'd be offered or not either.
oh yeah I can't build a computer myself even though many say better to do so and easy I can't I may no longer be fully blind but my eyesight is still not good enough to concentrate focus on something like that and my nerves aren't that good get the shakes sometimes as well as bad cramps arthritus in hands so fiddly things like that can't handle like I used to which is terrible for an artist so this daz is great for me allows me to create in another medium so it's either prebuilt or from a place does custom builds and I have a chance for a once in lifetime for me decent custom build within reason of course so wanna spend wisely and it's mostly come down to these new cards
