The Galleries: Daz's best sales tool.

How many of you have been induced into buying a product you would have, or may have dismissed solely based on the way some artist used it in a render in the galleries?

I've found that some of the galleries are actually better advertisments for many items than the promo pics, so I really find it useful when artists list the resources used in creating some of their renders.  Of course this may be a bigger thing with newer Daz users who haven't gotten deep into texturing and shading, so might not immediately see the possibilities of many models based solely on a lackluster promo pic.

Well, on a certain other site, they have user submitted galleries available right on a product's store page. I always browse that section before buying anything. But alas, people totally scoffed at my suggestion of adding a link to galleries to store page descriptions here at Daz...

That would only work if the PAs have the right to veto links to Gallery images.  There are just as many abyssmal uses of products as there are really good ones.

Totally agree that there is a lot of less than stellar work in the gallery. I'll never forget when Iray was first announced, and how they told us that lighting was something that many users had been struggling with, adding 'you've only got to look at the gallery for evidence of this'. I remember thinking that Daz must have been very sure of the product to use the 'insult the efforts of the people you're attempting to win round' tactic!

I don't think the gallery has ever inspired me to buy anything. Novica's product review thread, however... the woman has probably cost me a small fortune :)

Hear hear!  I have to say that I also am more swayed by threads here in the forums than I am by renders done with the products.

I have never been inspired to buy a product based on how it was used in a render, but I have bought products I saw featured in a render based solely on my interest in using them for one of my own projects.

Most of my work is inappropriate for the DAZ gallery, but I usually provide links to the products I used in the descriptions of my renders on my DA page in case someone sees something of interest to them.  I've received numerous thanks from other artists over the years for doing that, citing the various items they've bought thanks to my referrals.  When I first started out, I noticed many artists seldom credit the products they used, and I grew tired of asking them where they got them after being met with silence or being told they forgot.  Production credits are my way of proactively helping other artists find content and give credit to the vendors who made them.

I don't buy that that notion at all, not even for a second. That's like not buying colored pencils because a 6 year old might use them. No sane person is going to pass on an item because of a customer's bad render, when you got other renders next to it. And nobody is forcing people to look at them to begin with. That's the part no one seems to grasp here. Customer uploads would not be right on the store page, they could simply be a link to a connected forum. Obviously, and posts would be subject to forum moderation like they already are. And I'll turn this around on you, on how many times have you seen a forum post saying somebody like jcade sold them on a product? Especially when he posts a simple render of the figure? Have you ever really seen a person post that a pic in the same thread by another turned them off a product because of a poor render? If you have, I seriously doubt you've seen it as many times as something thanking jcade. If I ever release a product on Daz, unless linking to the Daz forum is specifically prohibited on the product page, I'll totally do this myself. (Edit: why does spacing not work on mobile? I can't separate paragraphs on the forum using my phone.)

Forums, yes, galleries, no, because the gallery UI is so godawful I never bother to use it.

But when someone shows renders or examples in forum threads on a product, there is a not inconsiderable number of times I've been swayed to get the product.

This is on the "to-do" list.  It will eventually happen.

I agree, I am never dissuaded from buying a figure or prop if I see it in an inexperienced artist's render.

    What is?

The one improvement I want to see in the galleries is the ability to respond directly to comments. Being able to talk to other artists and easily check out their own creations is what makes large sites like deviantArt work. At the moment, it's just too hard to thank people for commenting or reply to any questions.

I think he's talking about being able to view images that use the content being sold on a specific store page, which is honestly a feature that needs to be carefully implemented; I would much prefer a link to a separate page that showcases the content than have it integrated into the store page like some other stores have it.

I tend to disregard bad renders period.  If a render doesn't get my interest I don't even bother seeing what they used,  but often I'll see something used by someone in a gallery, and I don't even recognize the item, because it looks radically different that it did on the promo.  In those cases, I'm looking at the item in a new light, because I've now seen the possibilites.

For a recent ex.  There is a render currently in the galleries by TAKULAMI, using the Medieval Fantasy Accessories for Gen 2 that looks simply fantastic, so much so that I re-evalutated my initial opinion of the set and bought it on the spot.  The promos for the item weren't  bad necessarily, but they didn't  do anything for me either.   The use of it by TAKULAMI; however, did  move it over the line into the "I think I might have a use for that" category.

Ah, that's a very good idea then. Images like the one Nelsonsmith just linked to would be great to find under a product's promotional images.

That is an amazing render, thank you for sharing. I have those accessories but haven't used the headpieces in anything yet. Never thought they could look that realistic!

I always make sure I list all products I use when I submit in the galleries.  Of course the exception would be if the item did not come from this site and would therefore not link to the product, but yeah, I like letting people and the PAknow what I did with the product and hey, if it helps the PA sell more, then that's great.
