Some success with Headshop 9

So, on the quest for a completely original creation without resorting to learning Blender, or figuring out how to get Hexagon to stop crashing, I decided to give HS9 a try.  It was a bit of trial and a lot of error to get the software to play nice with Daz 4.9.  This has a lot to do with the new Daz Connect.  HS9 will not find Gen 2 on the new Cloud folders that Connect uses.  So, if you have already downloaded your Gen 2 Starter Essentials via Connect, you'll need to download it again via the Daz Install Manager.  Then, the Gen 2 base will be in a folder that is usable by HS9.

Personally, I'm pretty good with the Autodots for adjusting texture, and the Shape dots for modeling.  The line tool for profile and the sculpt tool still elude me.  But, I'll get the hang of them.

So, after a bit of tweaking, I managed Zhang and her more manga style sister, Xeri.

Laslo at Abalone was extremely helpful in getting me running in HS9.  He spent about an hour with me on Skype in order to help me figure out my problem.  And, he even took some time to show me what's coming up in the newest version 10.  I'm very much looking forward to it, as it will now include a profile reference modeler as well.

So, here are a couple of samples of the new characters.  They probably still need a bit of work.  The textures will need to be rebuilt either from photos or maybe a merchant resource.  But, existing G2 skins work just fine.

Pretty cool, looks like a fun and different way to do a character

If Headshop 9 could produce high resolution textures then it would be a very useful tool. I bought it a few months ago and contacted the vendor about the low-res output. I was told an update to address this issue was due soon, and so didn't return the product on that basis. So far, a Mac compatible update has been released, but no update to provide higher resolution output textures....

According to Laslo, the release of HS10 is to be very soon...just a couple of bugs to get worked out.  He showed me the beta.  But, he didn't mention anything about high res texture output.  I agree that would be a great addition.

For now, I'm using SnowSultan's templates for Genesis 2 and working up some textures.  Fitting is a slow process.  But, it works until I get a better solution.  I'm super impressed by what Raiya is doing with skin textures.  I bought Chiyo today and the skin is very lifelike.  Just a tiny bit of sheen with the metal flakes really makes it come alive.  I don't know if it's possible to get that nice of a texture for Gen 2.  But, I plan to try. :)

In all honesty, headshop is an app to create 3D heads/morphs from photographs which most use to try and recreate celebrities and such. If you are just wanting to create original morphs, there are other, possibly easier ways. Try the Simtenero randomizer plugin, it takes all your installed morphs and creates very original face and body morphs depending on the morphs you have installed, the more you have, the more variety.

Could be.  If I were looking to make something random, that Simtenero plugin sounds great.  I definitely want to try it.  But, if I'm targeting a certain characteristic of a celebrity or anyone else, with HS9 I can get the basic shape, then tweak as needed and replace the photo texture with a new original skin or one of my other Gen 2 skins.  For me, it's just a simple way of sculpting rather than using a more complicated modeling program.  Plus, I had a lot of fun using it.
