On the Genesis 3 characters the skins are using Iray shader but the tongue is using AoA subsurface shader ...why is that and is it necessary to apply the iray shader to the tongue? Would it make any difference?

What character are you seeing that on, Kharma? The Genesis 3 characters don't have a tongue surface. They have a Mouth surface.
If you render in Iray, it will do an automatic conversion to the Iray Uber shader. I have heard that it is better to convert it yourself, but I don't know if that is necessary.
Edited for spelling.
That seems odd -- are you seeing this on all Genesis 3 characters? Is this on the default load, or after applying the Iray Hierarchical Material preset, or both?
I have noticed it on different G3 characters but the one I have loaded at the moment is FWSA Taia, and on the surfaces tab with genesis 3 selected and you click on surfaces will say multiple for shaders and if you check them you will find that the Template 5 for mouth and teeth will use Iray Uber for the teeth but AoA_subsurface shader for the mouth ( thanks for pointing that out for me Barbult :) ) I wondering why for that one surface the AoA shader was used?
I don't have Taia, and all the ones I've looked at use Iray Uber on all surfaces.
I don't have Taia either, but I would consider that a bug that should be reported to Customer Service. An Iray material should not have AoA Subsurface shaders.
FR Harley has multiple shaders which uses Iray on everything except eyelashes which uses the omubersurface shader, Maret V7 Iray uses AoA shader on eyesocket, Samira also uses AoA shader on mouth, just a few that I checked. Is that just an oversight by the PA or is it done for a reason ?
I do see that on Maret. It sounds like a mistake -- I can't think of any reason for it.
I thought it could be a bug, I will try to make a report of the ones I find and report it and see what they say
