Can't seem to make a displaced fur with iRay... HELP?

Hi,

I'm making mats for a product... seems that what can be done in 3Delight with little effort is turning into a chore of annoyance.  Quite simply I have a set of head and wrist bands for a workout set, in 3Delight they look positively perfect with enough fuzz on them and poof to look realistic.  In iRay after the basic conversion and adding in a Normal map and removing the Displacement map I have a pretty flat looking set of band.  I tried to get a displacement map to work for me but in iRay it just seems to be deform the low poly items rather than actually displace.  I'm using a noise map (which worked fine in 3Delight).

So if anyone has found a way under iRay please post.

Thanks so much

Richard

Iray does not (currently) support sub-vertex displacement.  It only displaces actual vertices in the mesh.  3DL does sub-vertex displacement.

For Iray you would need to up the SubD level (probably just the rendertime SubD) on them quite a bit...

Hmmm, Ok.  So what settings do you suggest for the Rendertime Sub-D?

Now that's the question...I've been playing with 3DL stuff all night and trying to get some materials and icons rendered for stuff I should have had up on ShareCG a week ago.

But probably close or similar for HD morphs...and that usually starts at 2 or 3.

Jgreenlees has a fur shader sets the displacement and subd automatically, sure those can be changed to suit length I have used it iray on a cat women tail that was made for V4 on parented to Josie 7 came out looking pretty good has textures and the displacement maps difuse textures but I slapped a hair texture in that and it came out the color of the hair looked just as good, http://www.daz3d.com/leather-and-fur-iray-shaders

Thanks I seem to have that!  LOL  I need to find where she's got that in the DAZ My Library which I just looked and can't find them.  If you have them can you please post the whereabouts of these?

    Thank you!

I had some success with a Normal map rather than Displacement.

For using displacement in Iray, I generally have to sub-d the model itself to 2-3, and then the sub-d on the material to like 3+ (you'll need to use the Iray shader itself to get the material sub-d option, not sure if the other shaders have it).

Thanks folks.  Got it figured out....

For an extreme fur ball, literally, LOL I loaded up some home made noise maps and one in the Duffuse channel and gave it a brownish color, One in the Displacement channel and set the Sub D to 4 and then set the Min to -1.25 and Max to 1.25 and Bump to 1.00 (same map in that channel) and got this...  Took a little over 8 minutes though.  Don't like that.  So will continue to fiddle.

Thanks for the location ermullens I did see that folder but coudln't figure out who's folder that was!  LOL  Now I know! cheeky
