Red Sonja kitbashing

SnowSultanSnowSultan Posts: 3,774

I was wondering if anyone could give suggestions for various clothing products and accessories that could be used to create as accurate a Red Sonja as possible (based on her common chainmail bikini getup). Figure compatibility doesn't matter all that much and I don't really mind retexuring if necessary, it's the mesh accuracy that's most important for me.

A lot of artists have made Red Sonja fanart anyway, so maybe this thread can be helpful to others as well. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Now that you mention it, it is rather odd that no one has made a replica of that armor yet, especially when you consider we have Vampirella equivalents.

Yeah, I looked through about 18 pages of fantasy clothing here and didn't see anything that jumped out as something that could be used to recreate her outfit. With all the fantasy skimpwear here and replicas of so many other outfits, that is pretty surprising.

I did a few fan art images awhile back and it was a pain finding the right clothing that worked for me. For the top and under bottom I used parts from Death Bringer (DAZ) with my own textures. I modeled the shoulder armour, the chainmail plate below, and arm band along with the leg dagger myself. The leggings are from Elsa from Rhiannon at rendo and the gloves are from the Scarlet Witch cosplay outfit at Rendo with my own textures.

Terry at DA has a red Sonja outfit for sale for V4

Thanks for that link, Terry's is the most accurate one I've seen. Just wish it wasn't for V4 and that the bottom had some movement morphs. You did a very good job modeling those elements of your image!

Looks like this will be a much tougher job than I might have thought.  ;)

Thanks for that info JV, that's also a very good render.

I need to correct something I said earlier, Terry's apparently does have a lot of movement morphs. I assumed it didn't because I couldn't find any renders of anyone using them and he doesn't mention it on the product page. I just talked with him and purchased that set. Hopefully I can get it fit to a Genesis 2 or 3 figure well enough and a few Iray shaders should work wonders.   :)

Let us know how it autofits as I am on the fence about getting it also.

Wow, really like the red Sonja renders. Good work. I loved the red sonja character.

The pedant in me feels compelled to note that while the OP question was about a chainmail bikini, none of the solutions depict same. The offered examples would more properly be scale mail ( not exact but closer than chain).

I have seen some good chainmail textures on a number of products and would think the enterprising artist could make it happen.

Finally (as the pedant) the concept of accurate Red Sonja outfits is amusing. I've beenreading fantasy literature for over 40 years and there have been myriad depictions of Sonja's armor.

I conclude that accuracy is in the eye of the creator.

take all this w tongue in cheek. I would pick a good outfit regardless of material and start trying various iterations of Mec4D's metal shaders.

    Will probably try this myself.

Fair enough, it's not really chainmail. As you said, she's worn a number of outfits over the years, I was just referring to the most popular and depicted one.

Accuracy is important though; a simple bikini with a scale or chainmail texture would not really be correct for 'genuine' Red Sonja art. Neither would the Power Barbarian top (it's really good, but not long enough) or really anything other than Terry's cosplay version or custom modeling like FSMC did.

JV, I'll post my findings soon. So far, it's conforming fairly well to G3 with only a few issues (mostly the boots and the metal bottom, which I parented anyway).

Evilinnocence at RDNA has some actual chanmail parts for V4 that were really nice. The panties autofit GF3 rather well. If anything, they could probably do a nice outfit for GF3

I have been a RS fan for awhile and saw a comic image last year of her coming out of a bath after killing someone and that image and outfit inspired me for the images I did for DS. I then looked up lots of images of her to see what outfits or parts of outfits inspired me the most and went from there.

This thread is inspiring, makes me want to redo my character for GF3 now, hmmmmmmmm

I stand corrected and humbly beg forgiveness. I went back to the original image of Red Sonya as restored by José Villarrubia   ( http://mavericuniverse.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Sonja , https://www.comixology.com/The-Adventures-of-Red-Sonja/comics-series/5911 ). What do you know, it's scale mail and Terry's DA outfit is pretty dang accurate.

As punishment for my hubris, I shall buy this outfit and make G3F Sonya renders. laugh.

You were right in saying it was closer to scale mail, no need to beg forgiveness.  :)   I do look forward to seeing what you make with that outfit though, haha.

The textures for the Terry outfit are pretty much Poser-only, so also like you said, we'll need to use Mec4D metal shaders and such. It takes them well though, the only thing I haven't bothered to try and texture yet is the fur cape. One other thing worth mentioning; the shoulder armor bends with the figure's shoulders. Since this doesn't happen to Sonja's armor in the comics, we'll need to use a trick or other method to render it in its default pose even if the shoulders are bent. Isn't there a way to turn off bending for clothing for situations like this?
