Are the Fae Still a Thing?

Looking at the galleries here and on sites like deviant art (are there others?),  I don't really see a lot of 3d art with elves, not even when it comes to fantasy art, and certainly not enough to account for all the new figures I see that prominently display the character as if it was an extra from the LotR films.  Are people really that much into Elves that having that as an option for almost every other female character is a major selling point?  I'm just curious.

My Fae were part of a theme- not a mainstay, so I can't answer for the other vendors.  I personally like the Unseelie Court idea, and may expand on that in the future..but not the Happy Shiny Fae. I lean toward the dark and vicious.

There is always a lag between item production and demand, that applies to virtually everything, she-elf models included. But I don't think thin, delicate and either victim or strong-warrior women are going out of style. A quick search for fantasy art females gives me a page with about a third of the images featuring elf or elf-like women. That is, if you define elf-like as somewhat exaggeratedly delicate features and pointy ears.

So maybe you are seeing a lull but I think its too easy to produce a nice image of a fae. Its a basic part of western fantasy culture, and I don't see signs that its fading out of there.

If you care to venture into my gallery you will find the fae very present there and I'm surely not done with the theme.

Problematic part of what you see in the gallery is that images go by very fast and those that make it into the top follow to a large part a certain stereotype...

Elves are hugely popular art subjects as are pretty females and fantasy. I like the taller less kidified Tolkien ones personally. I don't buy female ones at all. I have too many.

Faerywilde was a website dedicated to it. Its on facebook now.

  • I love fae, even though I don't render them often. I grew up reading very old illustrated fairy tale books (my school library thankfully had battered old copies), and it's definitely challenging to capture that feeling without doing a pastiche. The old illustrators were brilliant!!!! Ditto for all the LOTR-inspired stuff be it Peter Jackson's films or the old fantasy calendar art.

As for characters, I think that many artists who specialize in fae create their own custom characters (mixing in ears from Creature Creator, for example, and a skin from a different character, and part of Aiko 6 for the leggy slender look) rather than purchase a specific fae or elf for that purpose.

I remember when DM were releasing lots of fae-themed stuff over at Rendo and much of it was of very high quality and worth seeking out.
