Until FirstBastion creates a police station, have you looked into Renderosity DreamLand City Block series? City Block Seven has a Fire Station, Unfortunately, you cannot detach the object unless you use a 3D modeling program. Just another two cents.

A multi-purpose looking building that could be used for other gavernment buildings would be awsome!! Also, some Harvard/Antoch (Atlantic States vintage Aermicana) university/collgege type buildings would be great. Looking forward to what you come up!!

The jails I've seen tend to make the windows too small for a person to fit through and put them high on the room walls so one can't even attempt to fit through them. This is the cells that have windows.

A police station may have some holding cells, but usually (in my experience) the jail is a different building from the police station.

Depending on which buildings you're talking about, the Metropolitan Correctional Center (jail, below) is located some distance away from the main police station in Chicago. (There are, understandably, several.) A couple of inmates managed to squeeze out of the windows in the MCC somehow, which I can't even imagine doing.

The jail I was in had a police station but there were also police stations without cells in town, like a lot of malls have police stations, but they are intended to put the officers near troubled areas. Before I moved out of the apartments I was living in I kept inviting the local police to open a police station in my apartment once I moved out, given the amount of calls all my neighbors were generating on each other.

It's been ages since I took Criminal Justice, and to date I've dodged having to report for Jury duty at a criminal trial, but that looks right.  I can't tell if that's the one at 26th and California, though I haven't been past there for a very, very long time.  (which is also the criminal court house.  Thankfully I haven't pulled Jury duty there yet.)

We might be using slightly different terms.  As I understand it: (as I said, it's been a while since I took Criminal Justice courses, and I'm only remembering the rule for Illinois)

Holding cell - found in some (though not all) police stations.  Used to hold suspects and those charged with very minor crimes.  Generally, you don't keep those who have been charged with a significant crime here for very long, and they're not intended for a long term (more than a few days) stay.

Jail - place to hold people who have been actually charged with a crime until the trial and/or for short (under 1 year - at least in theory) sentences for non-violent crimes.  In Cook County, at least, it's (one of several) different building from the Police stations.  See the picture above.  If you're in Jail, they give you the Orange Pajammas (or whatever color they are)

Prison - where the people who've been convicted and sentenced to longer terms go.

I have, but they're expensive.  And one does have a 27th Precinct sign too.  But I already have Urban Sprawl 2, which has a (small) Police sign that I parented to a more or less suitable building.  But the Urban Sprawl 2 buildings are just props, so the doors don't open (and aren't quite intended for the angle I was using for the picture.)  Which is what prompted the request.

Speaking of police station, when can G3 figures get a set of more fittable uniforms? I know there are things out there but most of them are for older versions.

I remember someone is doing a uniform set for London police for G2M, but it's like six months and there is still no release date.

Couldn't this school make a police station too?

That was the one that I was talking about, but the ivy by the door can't be removed easily and takes ninety shades of forever to render on my machine. I've never actually seen a modern-ish school with ivy on the building anyway, and one of my sons (who is on a school caretaking team) would remove any that might seed itself by accident before it got a grip as it can be quite damaging to brickwork. A small fortune was spent on removing ivy from a council-owned mansion not far from us a while back as the harm it could eventually do would likely cost even more. I can't really see schools encouraging it, even if they don't have to render it as well :)

Go to tools -> Surface selection. Click on the ivy, then go to Surfaces -> Presets -> Utilities -> 11_00 material off. Bingo! Ivy gone.

The Metropolitan Correctional Center is the jailhouse downtown. Seriously, that tall building is jailhouse, all jailhouse, nothing but jailhouse. That openish area at the top of the building is the rec yard; at that height, unless helicopters are involved, there's absolutely no risk of escape. Theoretically.

The actual courthouse at 26th and California is this weird hodgepodge of older and newer, although this shows only the older part of the building. (Link rather than embed because that's not a Wikimedia/Creative Commons image.) I actually like the look of that part, as municipal buildings go.

Sadly, I have pulled jury duty at 26th and California. And the Daley Building. And in Maywood. Twice. (Where I got to serve on what I devoutly hope and pray is my one and only criminal trial.) And technically in Rolling Meadows, although since that was two days before I moved out of state for a while, I dodged that one. But still. Eleven times so far. ELEVEN TIMES. My basic attitude right now is if it isn't at 26th and California or the Daley Building, I ain't goin'. I have done my civic duty and several other people's. It used to be that if you had served -- and kept the pay stub to prove it -- they couldn't call you more than once every five years. Then every two years. Now they can theoretically call you every year. I'm guessing most people don't bother to show up these days.

Anyway Police HQ -- which I think may be purely administration these days, without any jail/holding cell functions -- is down at 35th and State now, I think, although it used to be at something like 12th and Dearborn, maybe. I believe it's actually called something weird like the "public safety headquarters" or some such.

Not sure about there, but the meth epidemic here has shrunk the population qualifying for jury duty since convictions or pending charges prevent you from duty.

So, is the look of this one going to be more urban or suburban?

Ah, I'm over in the near suburbs (the ones that look like they could be residential parts of the city), so most of the time if I'm in the city it's for cultural stuff (mostly museums, occasionally theater when we can afford it, once in a while shopping, and the occasional Cubs game - and yes, those are culture.)

I more often get Standby than actual jury duty, but any time a friend of mine (who works in insurance) complains about having to go in to the city to give testemony when I have a pending standby summons, I end up getting called - but have yet to actually make it on to a jury. (knock on wood)

Well, the reference pics I gave were from "near suburbs" - those suburbs that immediately surround a city that are closer to "urban residential" than "suburban", and tend to not be as open and meandering as what most people think of when they think "Suburban"

When I think of police stations I think more of "police precinct", i.e. stone / brick building with some globe lamps out front.  Like you see in many many movies and TV shows.  Google image search "police precinct" and you get lots of examples.

Where I live the local police stations either are part of an old municple hall and not discrete buildings or they just look like a generic office building.  That's reality. But for me, the precinct look is more evocative of "cops" than an office building with a police car out front.  Your mileage may vary!

Ack.  It's here.  It's perfect!  And it's more than my currently available Mad Money...

I promise, as soon as the funds are available, I will be getting this.  Thank you, First Bastion.

First Bastion rocks! I sent him an e-mail once suggesting a firing range for all the guns and ammo that Daz sells; a couple of months later the "Indoor Firing Range" showed up in the store. Perfect!

Now... about that shopping mall Exterior I've been thinking about.... wink

  • FirstBastionFirstBastion Posts: 8,048

Thank you both for the positive comments.  I'm always open to suggestions.  And if it fits with the overall strategy I'll happily take a crack at it. A few exteriors for the "Ubiquitous Ten Rooms" set made alot of sense.  Interesting little tidbit regarding the firng range,  when I first got into 3D it was in the video game realm,  and as part of my level design learning curve exercises I built a walkthrough level where moving targets would pop up from behind crates and opening doors as the player would trigger them walking through the level. So a firing range felt quite doable after a bit more research.   It is possible,  I may have played too much HalfLife in years gone by!

    Mall Exterior - definitely.

Wow! Love these. And that emergency hospital building looks amazing.

Fliiping through Amazon prime videos last night and saw Airplane was in there so I watched the preview.  This exchange seems appropriate:

Doctor (Leslie Neilson): This person is very sick and we need to get her to a hospital right away.

    Stewardess: Doctor, what is it?

Doctor: It's a big building full of sick people, but that's not important right now.

Oh look, another building that will have to be purchased relatively soon.  :)

Oooh, FirstBastion Bank has a nice ring to it, too!  Then a courthouse, a couple of high rises to go with the Ubiquitous Rooftops and Ladders!, maybe a football stadium or a hockey rink, a couple of regular office buildings to mix in with the extraordinary ones..... okay, I'm going off in a corner now.  Too many ideas and we might overload the poor guy.

Actually, this is the thread where he said he'd make it. :)  We're now celebrating that it's made, and looking forward to the hospital, mall exterior, and whatever other wonderful buildings he may make in the future. :)

Love the police station!  It went into my cart as soon as I saw it.  Was playing around with it a bit tonight and noticed a slight... error.

    Maybe it's British???  laugh
