The artist known as "PRINCE" has just died.  He was 57 years old.  Though I'd share the news here in case there are any Prince fans out there (like myself).

Purple Rain and Raspberry Beret were my favorite songs of his.  May he RIP.

Edited to take out "formerly known as" since he did go back to using PRINCE eventually.

Wow, that's really young. So sorry to hear it!

I am gutted. We were just talking about him yesterday. I have such a clear memory of the very first time I heard him. A boyfriend had just gotten the album and played it for me and I was mad for 1999. I suspect I thought the boy friend was way cooler than he was because of his taste in music. A real loss.

    Hope he didn't suffer.

Not a fan of the majority of his stuff, but he was bloody talented.

We all go sometime.  What we leave behind is what counts.  Prince left quite a bit.

Truly a sad day for so many learning about his sudden passing.  I've been a fan since the beginning.  R.I.P. dear Prince. You and Michael have some catching up to do!

I lost a lot of interest in pop/rock after 1980 but I have been surprised at how many Prince songs I have become aware of as they have been playing many of them since the news broke. Clearly a huge talent but the only song of his that I have in my music library is a cover of Purple Rain by Etta James ... just love that.

There's one heck of a supergroup building up in the afterlife this year.

Sorry I'm too stupid to figure out or remember the workaround for embedding YouTube videos, but here's a link... A light hearted Prince being funny on the Muppet Show...  http://youtu.be/cgYEsfBuHoo

Oh, I need to order the Muppet Series. So good it was.

    Greetings,

Fwiw (in re: the thread title) he actually had been back to using 'Prince' for a long time, at this point.

The crazy thing is how even if you didn't like the music he himself recorded, there's this incredible body of work of stuff he wrote for OTHER musicians and they performed...

He was a unique power, and will be missed.

  • As my wife says, Bowie is getting his band together!

I may not have been a fan of all of his work but I have the utmost respect for his talent!

Yeah...I just found out (today actually, while reading articles about him on-line) that he went back to using Prince after his contract with Sony expired in 2000(?).  I had not known he went back to using "Prince".

Prince and Purple Rain (the movie, song, idealogy?) was popular with a lot of the ladies in my college.  I did like the movie.  The Time was in it, as where several of Prince's musicians of that era.

We all danced in the nightclubs to 1999, When Doves Cry, and Little Red Corvette.  The subwoofers in one club were big enough that the ladies would sit on them to feel the bootie-shake.  Boom, boom, boom!

I understand and respect his desire to be low profile in his life and social activities.  To me, this is key to keeping one's self focused on the real goals, made even more challenging by him because he played most of the instruments on his records (the early ones at least).  Hearing about drugs surprised me because I thought he was a teetotaler in all things chemical or alcoholic.  I still hope that part is not true.

Several months ago, I read about how he was still, even after all these years, interested in new talent and how he was helping new musicians, who really do benefit from being cultivated and nurtured (as musicians).  I like to think that he told more than a few people that they were making unappealing noise, and helped them to find a path that truly was musical.  We humans usually do better in life with constructive criticism rather than a perma "you're so awesome!" gushing.

His ability to write good music will be missed, I think.

I had never heard this version before.  I think it's better than Prince's recorded version.  And not because his is poorly done or anything like that.  No, I just like this one with the blues guitar and electric piano.  Oh and the voice.  OMG, the voice; what a knockout voice!

But still, whether it's done with a more traditional blues arrangement, a rock ballad, or just as a jazz saxaphone instrumental, it just serves to demonstrate how good the underlying song is.  Songcraft is our friend.  Sometimes, I worry that our friend has been lost.  Or left at home in the past.
