Since Daz 4.9 the scan for new content doesn't do anything anymore, so you can't single out a product you just installed. But that is not the main reason I feel compelled to move to smart content.

    No, it still works.

I use and like connect. Stuff installed with Connect won't show up in the content manager tab but will show in the smart content tab. That is precisely what pushes me to switch to smart content.  As it stands with studio's 4.9 full potential the content manager categories won't suffice anymore. I will use DIM only for particular needs, not that I hate it, but simply because I really like connect. Why do I have the feeling that DAZ doomed the content manager categories :) As a matter of fact I guess one good reason why they did this move.

Content Library > Categories (and Products) still work for Connect-installed items.  Smart Content uses the same Category information.

You make me think something is wrong with my Studio 4.9 installation though I doubt that.

Whatever method I use to install products (Manual copy of files coming from third part vendors, DIM or connect) nothing gets highlighted when I scan for new files in the known directories. The new files will appear in the content manager view when I browse the directories, but they are not marked as new and I have to know what I am looking for to find them. I double checked the content manager for the directories it scans. So I persist to say I can't easily single out newly installed products in the content manager view.

In Content Library > Products I can see the Connect installed products but this view is a flat view of all the files in a product and that is barely usable. It is not what I was used to before Studio 4.9 and also not what can be seen in the smart content view. Content Library > Categories > Default does not get populated by connect installed products but gets populated when using DIM.

Obviously we don't have the same experience about managing files and products in the content manager view. Anyway, I don't care anymore. I switched to smart content. CPA and a simple procedure to build metadata convinced me to go that way. I am pretty sure DAZ won't do anything for the content manager view since too many people used it to move files around.

Thanks for your time and help.

I agree that no longer having the blue highlight is annoying.

I agree that no longer having the blue highlight is annoying.

When you have a lot of content but haven't used much of it yet, almost everything was blue so I found it rather useless. I've wanted the choice of date sorting in the content view but it hasn't come yet and I doubt it ever will.

Which is the reason I often use Explorer instead and when I easily find the most recent products installed, I simply drag-n-drop into my scene. (Edit to add: I can also keep more than one Explorer window open which obviates the need to scoot back and forth and around in Content when setting up a scene.)

I don't even have the Smart Content tab open because it's been pretty useless for me. I would only use it for the case where materials for a piece of clothing aren't where they 'should' be in content.

Hmmmmm. I'm wondering if DIM would object if you handed it a zip file that had everything (ie, cr2, pz2, mtl, pp2, etc) in folders under a single named folder in characters library? I'm thinking of actually re-arranging content inside zip files or creating my own and archiving the original for some types of content--like Robots for example. IOW doing the organization before install instead of after which I don't actually do when I've installed with DIM.

I bought CPA and have been doing this all day. I can vouche for it working. I've been making packages by Vendor then rearranging or deleting the files on the files tab before creating the new package. DIM has been installing them all and I can open them in DS just fine.

NOTE: you will want to check that file tab BEFIRE you create the new packages because you'll  have to delete files at some point. Some packages have the breakdown in a 'My Library' folder. Those need to be moved to the normal content heriarchy then delete the my library folder for it to install correctly. The vendor notes this is the readme but it can be missed.

Thank you for the confirmation and info!

You're welcome. Another bit of advice. I suggest you don't go *too* crazy on the package sizes. One: they will take a long time to install if they are huge and two: if it fails you have to go through each folder in that zip to find the ones with the illegal chacter, fix it, then make a whole new DIM zip for it.

Also, can this utility be used to organize items from the same vendor?

First, I would like to say thank you for creating this. I saw something like this but it was a hack that was not being supported, this is! Now, the reason I use smart content is because I purchase alot of stuff from other places (and freebies & stuff that is just obj sometimes) and they come with Poses and extra textures and trying to remember where everything is a nightmare. I do agree setting up smart content is a royal pain in the you know where. I wish there was a tool for smart content creation, the way it is set up inside of Daz studio is a pain I have to go thru too many steps and that is for one thing. One example is making clothes smart content for G3F but there are a whole bunch of extra characters that are G3F that can use the same clothes but I have to mark them also and have to scroll down a list time and again and this get nerve racking. I would like to see a tool that lets me do this from the outside of the program or at least a easier interface inside Daz Studio. I use this Dim tool to create my new smart content but I have to create the smart content data first then repackage. This seems kinda backwards. I want to assign smart content data first then use this program to install via DIM. I bought this as soon as it came out because it was something sorely needed but this is an incomplete solution to my problem. My hope is that someone steps up and creates a solution.

Sorry got unsubbed from the thread and didn't notice it. Yes you can say make an OOT package. Just keep in mind it tosses everything in your product library in one big listing if you combine them. As an example say you make a OOT clothes (with 6 items) then OOT Hair (with 5 hairstyles), First whatever you named the package, that is the name they will appear under the product Library tab. Second when you click on your "OOT hair" listing it brings up ALL pieces of those 5 products in one big list (the hairs, the mats, the poses). It can actually be detrimental to finding things if you go crazy on the combines. I also found it easier to split by product type like I used in my example than by doing just a OOTpackage because of this.

Where I'm having trouble is the product showing up in the Install Manager.  How do you include any flies you make withthis appliaction in the Install Manager.  What I'm trying to do is install the products I'm making into DAZ Studio with Content Package Assistant.  Can anyone hel me please?

  • You'll need to put a copy of the package created by CPA in the directory you specified in DIM for your downloads.

Thanks Doctor Jellybean.  I worked out wherre I was going wrong.  I hadn't selected the download folder for DAZ Install Manager.  Did that last night, and made a package.  Found it this afternoon in the DIM and instaled it.  Went to DAZ Studio 4.9 and found the package.  Thanks  for your reply.  Love this product.  You've made installing by zip file a lot easier.  Thanks again.
