Pictoglyph

In the preview for http://www.daz3d.com/pictoglyph-brushes it looks like the brushes are actually carving some depth into the pillar.  How does that work?

If you use the brushes to apply dark grey or black image to the existing bump or displacement texture files for the the column,  then when rendering the column will look to have some carved depth during rendering.

As FirstBastion pointed out, it has to do with the varying shades on the map . You can apply them to Bump maps, displacement maps or normal maps. Each one will do the effect you want, but you'll have to learn what each does in order to get the effect that is right for you in the lighting and renderer you want. I prefer normal maps myself.
