Use DAZ models on UE4 for CGI
in The Commons
Hi,
is it possible? I want to make a movie with UE4, not a game. Do I have to pay the 500$ license for videogames?

If I remember correctly, the answer is no. As long as the 'output' is a 2d render of some sort, you do not have to purchase the indie/commercial license. There may be a previous thread where people were experimenting with the UE4 renderer and DAZ products too.
If, however, there are 3d assets, you must purchase the indie/commercial license.
Anything rendered is fine without the license. The license is only required if you intend to distribute the actual mesh itself.
Of course if your game / app isn't going to leave your house or be available on the internet you can use these models to see if they're even sutiable for your use case. You don't make a game in a couple of weeks that's anything original at all so it will be a while before you even need to consider buying a license. They do occasionally have sales of the game dev license too.
OP isn't making a game/app at all. They're rendering video.
Hi, thanks all for the answer. I just intend to use the characters for rendering a movie and put on youtube.
most uses that are for personal use and does not create any kind of profit, I wouldn't think would require a license, coud be wrong but normally how some do it so depends on the person who's items are used in the way you intend on using, i tried sticking V6 in UE4 lagged out my last comp and the rigging wasn't compatible once i changed it over dual xeon E5 2699v3 more memory than the 16 i had and the nividia vca worked out pretty good just more hassle than i wanted to mess with at the time.
What happens when the rendered videos start earning ad revenue? Or do those videos have to opt out from ads?
If you are distributing something that contains the 3D data, rather than a 2D render, then you need a Game Developer License. The income you get from your development work (not just from that title) determines whether you need an Indie or a Pro licnse, but it doesn't affect the need for a license.
A rendered video...enjoy the proceeds. You do not need an extra license to make videos that earn you money. You just can't use the actual meshes in a project where the mesh is included in what is being sold/distributed.
So I guess it is fair to deduce that I can use the Daz 3D assets to create a game mod, capture a video and upload it without any restriction. I do not have to pay Indie or Pro license as long as I do not distribute the mod.
As long as it is video...
You can use the Daz assets to make cut scenes, sprites, rendered backgrounds, icons and anything else for a game, without needing an indie license, as long as it does not require the mesh to be part of what is distributed. The moment you cross from rendered image to including the mesh is the moment you need the game-dev license.
It must be a bit confusing. Some people think that as soon as a DAZ model is imported into a game engine you owe DAZ $500. As the others told you so long as the only part of you DAZ 3D / UE4 endeavor the public has access to is video or stills from that endeavor, you don't have to buy a game license. You can even script a game, which isn't disimilar to scripting an animation with decision points when it comes down to it.
It is only confusing if people don't stop and think. Daz Models can be used in NEW games, with a Game dev license. Daz models can not be used for Game mods, with or without a game license, if the mod is designed to be redistributed.
Anything 2d is not the model itself, and so is fine.
And as the OP of this thread specifically said a Video, then chat about Game Dev licenses is not neccesary
Exactly. He may be putting them in the UE4 engine, but he's doing so as, effectively, a renderer. There is no need for a Game Dev license for this purpose.
Things clear! Thank you so much for your time :)
