Topic: Masking and Basic Postwork in Photoshop

A few people have requested this, so I hope it can be helpful! I'll show how I render a scene in Studio, render masks for surfaces using Mask and Multipass Toolbox, put them together in Photoshop, and do basic color correction to make a dull render look better.  You'll be able to watch it later on Youtube if you can't be there live, but I hope you can. :)    At the end of the stream, I'll post a link to download one of my custom Photoshop Curves and a Photoshop action to quickly apply mask renders to your final render.

Thanks for your time!

(will try to do the Powerpose stream next time)  ;)

    Thanks for making these!

Thank you for watching it.   :)   I don't know if I'll keep streaming tutorials though, it doesn't really make sense to schedule a stream when no one shows up or there's really no need for viewer comments or interactions. I can probably do a better job editing these sorts of tutorial videos in Photoshop and streaming only when I'm working on something or doing something where viewers can participate.

It's good practice though and I hope they can help someone!

Yeah - I was at work and couldn't watch it... but glad to see you were making tutorial videos! To get an audience you might have to have several live streams to build a fiollowing.

  • SnowSultanSnowSultan Posts: 3,773

Thanks again.  :)   Oh sure, I know it will take a long time to get any sort of audience, but those sorts of videos might be better if they were just 'normal' videos (like Sickleyield's). I still need to work on the format.

Yep. One problem with streaming is scheduling when people are available...So I'm glad you are leaving them up to watch on our own time. It would be great if Daz would consider stickying you and Sickel's tutorials here... maybe they could compensate your time with some free content??

  • SnowSultanSnowSultan Posts: 3,773

    Sure, glad they can help.

Haha, well that would be nice, but I don't think I'm deserving of anything like that yet. Not until I really get the hang of this anyway.  ;)   Sickle deserves it though, her tutorials are very professionally done.

I'm better as a one-on-one tutor (from real-world experience), but I'd have to charge to do that with Studio and I don't really want to. I still might just leave the Studio tutorials to Sickleyield and focus on other stuff like product reviews, postwork tutorials, and maybe actually finishing renders more often.   :)

I've spent the past 8 years doing YouTube videos. I did live shows for awhile. Live shows can be quire rewarding, if you have the proper equipment. I used Wirecast which is an excellent live TV program. I got stressed out doing the live shows, and went back to just doing YouTube videos. I haven't done any DAZ Studio or Poser tutorials for awhile. I did one recently, and posted the link here. I got absolutely no response.

I applaud those of you who do tutorials and get a decent audience response. I know it can be a challenge. As for me, I'll go back into retirement from tutorials.

You've been around a long time Ron and I do remember people being interested in your videos back in the day. There are just so many other things to watch and do online these days that you really have to bring something original to the table in order to be noticed. Video game streams are popular because people either want to see a game before they buy it, watch a very good player do well, or mock someone who isn't. I don't know if anyone really wants to watch a 3D stream because our work process really isn't that interesting. Quick tutorials seem to be what this community benefits from the most.

It's definitely a challenge that I know you're familiar with. Thanks for stopping by.   :)

SnowSultan, I've always admired your work. Thanks for taking the time to respond. I've concentrated on more personal experience videos over the past 8 years. I've recently read forum requests from a few people saying they wanted some tutorials on "basic" stuff like installing content manually. I gave it a shot. My most popular recent video involved installing an SSD drive into a Macbook. (300 views versus 25 on other videos.) Maybe I'll have to begin doing more tech videos.

I don't want to de-rail this thread. I wish everyone all the best.

Thanks Ron, good luck here. For your own sanity, try not to get involved with any hot topic discussions - almost every time I do, I end up wishing I hadn't...not to mention getting half of my posts pulled because they are surprisingly sensitive here.  :)

UPDATE: New, improved, and hand-edited Puppeteer tutorial added. 1080p with subtitles.

If you happen to be reading this, I'll be streaming a short 'review' of two DAZ products in about 15 minutes from now that I think are worth checking out (a hair set by Outoftouch and a texture by Fred Winkler Art). Stop on by if you like.   :)

    Here's the final video:

I watched this last night and saved it my DAZ playlist.  Thanks for the video.  I honestly didn't think I was going to learn anything I didn't already know becuase I've gotten pretty good at using Puppeteer the last few months.  However, I was wrong.  You actually had a few things in there that I hadn't discovered as yet.  I love learniing new things.  I'll try to check out your other videos on TwitchTV, but I can't promise to be when it is actually live.  I hadn't even heard of TwitchTV until a few months ago.  But, thanks for making the Puppeteer video!

Thank you very much, I'm glad it could be useful! Could you tell me what new things you happened to learn from that video? I know it's hard to watch a show live, so no worries at all.   :)

UPDATE: Additional Brooke HD preview video uploaded, you can find the link in the description of the review video.

After watching your video, I've come to the conclusion Puppeteer may be more useful than people give it credit for being.  Most of the videos I've found about it don't touch on some of the things you go over in the video.  I had no idea you could do layers in Puppeteer.  I knew you could when you worked with stuff in the timeline, but I didn't know that about Puppeteer.  I had always wondered how those morph animations were created, but hadn't quite figured that out.  I imagine doing it in Puppeteer and then recording it would be a great way to do it.  I also didn't know there were options available when you right click on the little dots you place in the Puppeteer grid.  None of the other Puppeteer tutorials I found mentioned either of those two things.  This was a good video that filled in some holes that other beginner video don't seem to mention.

If you are looking for ideas, I certainly wouldn't mind a video tutorial that shows how to install and use those templates that were created in that Powerpose thread a few weeks ago.  I've downloaded all of them, but haven't had time to look up how to do anything with them.  A nice video tutorial would be very helpful for when I'm ready to tackle that.

Also wanted to mention that I've found some very useful things on your DA page.  I'm slowing working some of the tutorials that you have on there.

Ah, thanks for telling me. I didn't exactly know how layers worked until recently. They can be confusing, which is why you need to stay in Preview mode and be very careful when creating new dots.  :)

I can probably do a stream showing how Powerpose works, sure. What templates did you download? Do you mean ones for the horse, dragon, and such? I assume they're just dumped in with the rest of the Powerpose presets and will show up when the appropriate figure is loaded. I've never used a user-created template though.

Yes, those are the ones.  I downloaded them, but haven't even figured out where PowerPose wants them to be as yet.  So much stuff to learn and while I do a lot posing of late as I find it fascinating, I usually use the parameters tab or dragging a particular body part into position.  I've tried using PowerPose with the templates that are already loaded, but I haven't really done much else with it yet.  I would love to learn more about it to add to my arsenal of tools.

I'm not sure when I will stream next time, but in the meantime, you can put those Powerpose templates here (assuming you installed a 64-bit DAZ Studio to it's default directory):

    C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4 Public Build\plugins\PowerPose   (the plugins/Powerpose is the important part)

When you load a figure that has a Powerpose template, the matching template should appear in the panel. Hope that helps a little.   :)

Thanks.  I got a bit distracted with renders and stuff, but I'll try this.  I do have DS in the default directory so it should work.  The Masking and Basic Postwork thing looks interesting.  There's a 3 hour difference, but I'll try to remember.  I don't think I have any plans out tomorrow so I should be able to try seeing it 'live'.  I've never done the twitch tv thing before.  I've only ever seen the videos afterward.  I'll watch on YouTube later if I can't make it.  I've been trying to improve my postwork skills.  I'll definitely checkout the Powerpose one when you do it.

Apologies if anyone tried to watch my stream (I don't think anyone did though, haha), I did the tutorial three times and only half of one attempt was recorded. I'm not going to stream any more, from now on, I will record tutorials on my machine and just upload them to Youtube.

    Thanks for your understanding!

I totally got sucked into something and didn't get to watch the stream.  I was planning to try watching the recorded version tomorrow when I have more time.  Sorry about the technical problems.  I do love watching the tutorials on YouTube.  I think that is my favorite way of watching tutorials.  I can always back it up if I miss something and play it again.
