Render sizes for print.

I am curious how big of a render would be big enough to use for print.  I made a picture for my uncle but was never able to get it out onto a t-shirt or cup for him, now unfortunately it's too late, he loved wolves and the family likes the picture so they want it put on his tombstone.  I'm not sure how big the image will be on there so I'm not sure wether or not I should re-render the picture really big to be safe. Also would i need permissions from Daz or venders to be able to have the render used? I know when I go to Walmart to print renders I still sometimes get a run around because I don't have proof of where I got them from.

No, you don't need any permissions, the renders are yours to do what you want with.

I just created a new image in gimp. Set the size to a standard U.S. sheet of paper (8.5 x 11 inches) then went into the canvas size settings and switched the inches back to pixels and got 612x792

    I hope that helps :)

Awesome, thanks I have a smaller one that's 600x600 and a bigger one that is 1400x1400

    A 1400x1400 px render at 300dpi will give you around a 5x5in print, at 200dpi a 7x7 and at 150dpi a 9x9.

I was going to mention that my measurements were at standard printer resolution (72 dpi) but figured it was unnecessary since it was just a general rough guide and since I described how I came to that size, it would be pretty easy to figure out how to get more exact demensions for the need

Oh gosh, I wasn't taking aim at you, kaotkbliss! I'm a photographer from way back and I was just converting the render size into common dpi's.

First - all you have to say is that you are the artist.  No one should question where you got the image.  Once you tell them that you are the artist they should just stop any questions and start printing!

Second - I recently had this same question when I needed to print up a render for a poster.  I found two sites that were very helpful.  The first is a link to a size calculator so you can input the finished size of the output (whatever size picture is going on the tombstone) and tell it what resolution you want, usually printing is about 300 ppi and it will tell you what size your render should be in pixels.

The other link was helpful with aspect ratio because I knew the size I wanted, but didn't know what the aspect ratio needed to be to get the framing I wanted inside DS.  So, I found a article on cropping with an aspect ratio chart.  The full article is here.  Obviously, in DS we aren't cropping as we can set the aspect ratio to whatever we want.  But, the chart is useful if you know the size you want the finished render to be, but not the aspect ratio to get there.

    I hope this helps.

Incidentally, I once did a render and had cafepress turn it to a T-shirt.  It would have turned out much better if I had done postwork to improve the contrast and make it a bit 'toonier'.  T-shirts don't really do well with subtle shades (e.g., photos, though this wasn't quite photoreal either).

Thanks for the responses, I will definitely check out those links.  I'm not sure when exactly sure they will be ordering the tombstone but I'll be sure to find out the info.

LOL I didn't take it bad, just figured I'd better add in where I got my sizes for the OP since they were so different from yours :)
