Headlamp offset

Looks to me like Camera Headlamp Offset is differently configured than other dials - X seems to have been switched with Y? Is there a logical reason for this?

  • I think it might be because there's a difference between "up" as defined for positioning a camera, and for looking through a camera. Either that, or I'm more confused than I thought I was...

Or maybe it's because the dials Translate rather than Rotate the lamp (which may be the same as what you say?). Or maybe "offset" means headlamp offset to the camera and not to the scene, or whatever.

Checked the online docs but couldn't find anything about it. Never mind, it's probably as it's supposed to be.

BTW, the manual says this (  http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dazstudio/4/userguide/chapters/lights/start  ):

"There may be times when you'd like to switch back to headlamp lighting for your preview. Perhaps you are trying to move figures in a dimly lit area of the scene. You can switch back to headlamp lighting by toggling the 'Use Scene Lights' action in the toolbar."

I can't find that "action" (button?). I know I can turn on/off the headlamps on the Camera tab but a toolbar button is easier if you have another tab selected.

Thanks, that worked! But if you have no other active lights, it only works if you have Headlamp Mode set to off, it seems.

Ctrl+L is for Preview Lights, and does not control the headlamp mode. Preview Lights -- it does what its name implies -- is a separate feature from the headlamp. Though when there are no other scene lights, it can appear that they are one in the same.

Yes, looks like that, but if the headlamp is On or Auto, on the camera you have selected, ctrl+L seems to be disabled (has no effect).

So if you want to use ctrl+L as an easy way to turn off preview lights (e.g. for IRay rendering) it seems that you have to set all camera headlamps to Off.

While explicitly setting all camera headlamps to Off does work, the quickest method is to leave it at Auto, and then set Auto Headlamp to Never. This is because Daz still hasn't made the headlamp setting a default for newly created cameras, and you're bound to sometimes forget to manually update each camera you make. At least this is the case for me.

But note that Preview Lights can appear to function in reverse, so there's always an option to provide a posing light. Example: Camera headlamp to Auto, no other scene lights, turning PL off shows the posing light. Turning PL on removes the posing light (backwards from what you'd expect). The setting of Preview Lights doesn't affect the render -- both are light-less. The can be a beneficial feature if you remember about it. If you're using only non-scene lighting (e.g. environment dome or sun/sky), at least you can have a light to pose the scene with.

At least this is how it works in 4.8. I don't know if they changed it for 4.9. Daz should create and post a comparison chart of the internal logic that Preview Lights, scene lights, and headlamps use.

Thanks, useful info. Just can't find the "set Auto Headlamp to Never" option in DS 4.9 ?
