All good things ...

I started working in 3D back with Poser 6 and DS1 in an effort to take my mind off working in a combat zone. I found Poser easier towork with and stayed with Poser through its many owners and versions. With Poser and Studio diverging, I made a choice to move to Studio so that I could use the Genesis 2 platform of characters. During all that I became a PA for a time and found a home with the Star Trek forum here. I haven't always agreed with the way daz has done things but I tried not to let it interfere with my art. Over the last years I have noticed that it has become harder and harder to ignore the rift growing within the 3D community. I am not going to go into all of it because if you really think aobut it, it really is pointless since all I really want to do is get my mind off of where I am.

It has become more and more of a chore to open Studio or to even think about creating something. I really wish that I could get back to the way creating art made me feel when I first started, but I have to be honest with myself I ahven't felt it for a while. Now our community is even further fractured by saz's implintation of DRM with 4.9. I have made no secret which side I fall on with this issue, but again it is now irrelevant. I have struggled with this for a while now and I really don't see any other way. I want to wish my friends here well and hope that you can all continue to enjoy working in 3D art. To all those that I have bumped heads with, I want to say it was never personal and I hope that all of you as well continue to enjoy this field of art.

I somewhat know how you feel and I myself am buying less and less from here..  And on creating things even I find it hard to get going with making something it is just so so now..  As for DRM while it maybe seen as the best thing since sliced bread and seen to protect the intellectual property of creators we all know how well it has worked out for them..  I was reading an interesting article on the matter from one of the people at SmithMicro and it was a very interesting read and how their thoughts on putting DRM on third party content..

Either way hope you find something cool to do and hopefully enjoy whatever new venture you do find out there..

I know we in the Star Trek thread will really miss you if you go!  I hope you'll continue to stop by every so often and check in with us no matter what software you're using! .. or not using as the case may be.

I know how you feel, though.  I am also a user of the "other software" and am put off by this encryption thing.  I know it's silly, but I was actually kind of hurt when someone in another thread suggested that we Poser folks are just leaching off this website and didn't deserve any accomodation at all if we weren't going to toe the line and use D/S.  I remember in the not so long ago days when DAZ was just one of many websites selling Poser figures.  I cast my economic vote for ol' Vicky and her boyfriend Micheal and all their dreamhouse accessories many, many times... And now, apparently, they don't need me no more... Oh, well...

I don't know where you are, but thank you for serving. My son (a lt colonel) just retired after 20+ years. There are so many programs out there now and I want to learn my way around all of them. At 73, I have more than enough content to last me. I will stick with my DS 4.8 and just try to have a good time. Keep your sanity and come home safely. Bless you.

I'm constantly struggling with continuing to make 3D art, as you probably know from my journals and comments on deviantArt. This whole DRM issue has changed my view of the community too (for reasons very much the opposite to yours), but making art shouldn't really have anything to do with any community. You probably have to deal with more stress than any of us, and the only important thing is that you can find some enjoyment from making 3D renders. I had to completely get away from one 3D community, and I'd probably be better off participating less in others as well.

Take a break if you need to, but I hope you won't give up on 3D art because the communities are screwy.   :)

  • Roy, my gratitude and thanks to you for your service.  You and your fellow soldiers are near and dear to my heart.

Whatever you choose to do going forward (whether art related or not), I wish you nothing but the best of luck and success.

I also hope in my heart that this DRM thing will be corrected, and that it won't have to result in the permanent loss of customers, PAs, or DAZ itself.  We have a good thing going here and I hope it continues.  What form will the solution ultimately take, I have no idea.  But I hope and pray for the best for all.

    Roy,

You mentioned being overseas in one of the other threads- I can see why you'd want to take your mind off of where you are, and this encryption thing shouldn't keep you from using what you already have and enjoying it. What I would suggest when you feel like it, is perhaps focusing on creating a gallery or a thread over in Art Studio and simply staying off the rest of the forums for awhile. In other words, do the art and the social in your own thread and gallery- and you'll get the pleasant interaction that will help take your mind off things. We'd love to have you over in the Art Studio thread to see your work, and appreciate what you are doing for us. Hugs!

I guess I should start by saying I am not a member of the United States Military, I am a civilian contractor over here in Iraq. I have been over here for 11 years now and figure one of these days I will probably leave. Working in Poser/Studio was a big part of getting my mind off the day to day grind and the other things that go on here. I pulled up all my saved in progress images and it kind of shocked me there was well over 300 images in both Poser and Studio that I have started and for one reason or the other haven't been able to finish. I don't even want to go into the content I have purchased at different stores. I have tried to reinvent my style several times and its still not working. Maybe I do need to just step away from the forums and the polotics.

...yeah, politics and creativity tend to not mix very well. The former (at least for me) tends to put a damper on the latter.  I know my output has been way down, partly because of being assaulted by RL issues on one hand (which this is supposed to be a diversion from), and the feeling that the sense of community here is fracturing on the other. I finally gave up on all the DRM/4.9 discussions, said my peace and moved on.  I cannot help but notice the enjoyment and enthusiasm I once felt, has been waning, particularly over the last couple years.  I miss the the old galleries, the old sales, and the special incentives that are no more. With each "update" the site, and the forums here seem to have become less inviting and friendly.

I know what you mean. Sometimes, you just have to step back and walk elsewehere, to return and appreciate a hobby again.

Like, I constantly go from writing, to anime/drama-binging, to rendering, and whatever else. I haven't done much rendering lately, but starting last weekend, I completed seven images for a webcoming that's on the shelf of my "todo" since two years.

But I alsio understand about the forums/community issue. I like a positive, constructive athmosphere in a discussion. Of course, not everyone can always be of one opinion, and that is great. But when it starts to feel like you have to make a stand and explaining yourself, or be labelled something or the other, and the heated posts are filled with what feels like venom, then this takes this fun out of the forum. I felt compelled to make such a post yesterday, and it felt like sh*t. Perhaps it's because I like rendering so much, having found an outlet for the imaging stuff that I couldn't have dared to dream of using sketching. If it's something you invested a lot of feelings into, it's easy to take things personally and feel pushed into cornes at times...

    Anyway... blush

All the best to you! I hope that you'll be able to find an outlet for your creative juices, an maybe re-discover rendering after taking a break. Or maybe you'll start doing clay figure animation, or mural painting (the modern style variation?), or something completely different...! :-)

...the one thing I will say about here is that the forums are much more "civil" and well managed.  There are disagreements, sure, but they don't degenerate into "schoolyard" behaviour. like I've seen on other forums where rudeness, flaming, and insulting are allowed to go on pretty much unchecked.

I am not going to comment on the references made to other posts but I was given some good advice and I think I will take it. I am walking away from all but a few threads here, I have to many other things that I HAVE to deal with and the daz forum isn't one of them. Thank you all of your comments and advice, you ahve all been great. Maybe one day I will get more active here but for now I am going to stick with the few threads that have zero political issues in them. Before I go I do want to say something to you Kyoto Kid, I have always gotten a kick out of your little animation in your dignature block. I love that movie, it has been one of the few I have been able to take my kids to when I am home.
