Anyone aware of any cartoon-yet-architectural like cities, like this?

Hi:

Does anyone know if there are any "city-building" models that are similar to the one in the picture I am attaching here.  I would describe it as cartoon-architectural.  Sort of SimCity/City Skylines-ish.  Thanks!

  • Sandy Bay is the closest I've seen here.  I haven't seen anything similar on any other sites.

sandy bay was on sale recently, too. It renders beautifully in iray with an HDR skydome

Really? I haven't tried it in Iray, yet.  Now on my To Do list!

One could perhaps take a realistic city (Stonemason's products jump to mind) then in the Surfaces tab change the materials to simple basic colors.  Make sure this will work without loosing details (ie, make sure windows are a separate surface from walls and not drawn on, etc.)

Can confirm this works quite well, though replacing materials does take a very long time to get right. Stoneman's Urban Sprawl 2 used here in a promo image I produced last year.

I did the same thing with a classroom and a school hallway using the Visual Style Shaders and it worked pretty nicely. Took a long time to manually replace shaders, though.

My understanding of the OP's request is not about cartoonish shaders etc, but about the type of things in the model. You will notice in the example posted there is an airport, dam, train station, hospital, town hall etc. Such facilities would typically be for a city of a million people plus, but the city pictured probably has enough housing for a few hundred. This, unless I am mistaken, is what is meant by cartoonish

  • First off, sorry guys for the slow response ...  I either have notifications turned off, or Daz forums don't notify, or something else.  Also, not sure why my username is purchase-blah-blah-blah.  Guess a lot has changed since I've been away from DAZ, eh?  Annnnyway ...

Knitting... thanks, yeah I've seen (and admire Sandy Bay), but it is just too cartoony, and not the right buildings, etc.  But thanks.

sriesch /Shane ... Bingo, that's exactly the conclusion I came to after a lot of searching.  Although I'm not sure I can do it.  But there are a few building sets out there, including SM's that might work.  Might have to hire someone to either do the t-mapping, or if that won't work, the whole thing.

Paradigm ... Unfortunately, I don't use DAZ Studio ... but I do have a bunch of similar shaders for Poser I might be able to use.  Although ultimately I'll be rendering in Vue most likely.   That does give me some ideas.  Just have to find those shaders and try to remember how to use them.

Havos ... Spot on.  I mean the shaders are a big part of it, but you this is true also.  You nailed what I couldn't articulate about the "cartooniness" of it.  It's really like a city sim game look.  IN FACT, I was thinking of doing that as a backup, as it would make aspects of bulding MUCH easier, and animating easier in some ways as well.  However, getting permission for the imagery is one thing (probably not a problem with some of the companies I could use), but it's not QUITE the right look either.  (see my attachment where I tried, very quickly, to somewhat mimic the layout of the original.)

Ok, thanks all! ... I'll keep looking and investingating.  In the meantime, can anyone recommend a modeler/mapper who would be up to the task and would be for hire to make one?
