I have seen Kane as well, and he looks like an interesting character. To be fair though, rendo is probably even more female biased than this one, particularly for clothing.
No arguement from me. However it is a sad state of affairs that male characters sold recently here at daz are pretty stripped down. No pun intended.
I havn't done much with G3M yet and the one and only product I made for G3M/M7 sells unearthly bad. For some reason I can't get artistically access to the new males and I agree with maxamillion and Serene Night, they are far away from being the real counterparts to the G3 females, the new Gianni in comparison to the original Gianni 6 is pale, unrealistic, generic, meaningless.
Image is M7, but as imaged, it's maybe better to hide than to show.
Your art is so amazing Jepe! I love that image, and I follow you on facebook. How you manage to make such great looking hunks is beyong me! Good work on that! I love all the wires and plugs. =-)
Thank you for your kind words, Serene Night, but I havn't had so much luck with G3M yet...
Leo had the one eye color yes (and yes I also found that one weird), but M7 and Gianni7 are at least as as full featued as the previous generation, Both also come with facial options (a beard for gianni lighter eyebrows for michael) which is more than their gen6 counterparts.
And yes the ladies have more options because of makeup, but from my limited expirience its easier to paint on makeup and have it look good than facial hair (for onething makeup tends not to need a custom bump map)
edit I had a quick look at Kane, and he does look fantastic doesnt he
Kane looks great, and has nice mats for 3dl. I posted a render over in Novica's thread.
I agree, Gianni base and Leo base, were generally nice, but Leo also had no beard which is strange for a greek warrior. But other characters included in the pro bundles were pretty plain. They could be made for any figure.
When I buy a gianni pro bundle, I was thinking characters should suit the theme of Gianni. Which should be a bulkier more mature warrior type. It felt to me a bit like characters included in these sets weren't designed with the theme in mind, but could've been made for Michael 7 or base male.
I understand making textures are hard, but clearly it is possible since other pa's manage to include bodyhair options and even some scalp options. Not having these, makes the characters look pretty similar to eachother and quite close to the skin resource they sprung from
I love your sheets set for M7.
I have no idea why Daz isn't wooing you to do male characters for M7. All of your male characters sets are very distinctive - no two resemble each other.
I think the lack of variety in available male characters hurt the sales of your sheets more than anything. It was released when there wasn't very much one could do with M7 to begin with.
I totally agree with you that the characters with Gianni were less warior-y, As was the bundle in general. I wonder if part of the problem was his coming after Leo, who had multiple items along the ancient warrior theme, and 2 characters who were more warrior/mature respectively.
(If you switched things so that Gianni and Leo'sbundles, the resulting Gianni bundle would be pretty perfect imo, I like the stuff in Leo's bundle better but really don't like Leo)
It is totally possible to make body hair, but in the Comparing Gianni's beard to a makeup option from one of the daz ladies, the makeup takes 2 maps (diffuse and sss) whereas the facial hair takes 4 (diffuse, sss, spec, and bump + it needs all those for the torso to in Giannis case) now I'm not claiming that all those maps are ech individually painted by hand, but there is a conversion rate of sorts, You know, one beard is worth 3 makeups (and yes daz is still sort then, where was I going with this?)
Thankfully though there aren't really any G3 facial/bodyhair products yet(?) all the G2 ones I have actually autofit really well.
As an artist I think it's very sad that until now the G3 males are so far behind the females, I think the gap between the two never ever was that big as it now is. As a merchant I really don't have a reason to complain as my female stuff sold and sells so much the better, that I have the freedom to produce also the one or the other non-seller. lol But to make something cool and unique out of a generic and uninpired base is extremely difficult and honestly too much work and effort to be worth it. Even all the other master texture makers like Morris or Mec4D keep away from G3M for now, that has a reason, I think. Maybe I'm wrong, but only time can tell.
If the demand is really there, but the supply limited, then prices should actually be higher for the male stuff. Not that I'm trying to put ideas into Daz', or PAs', collective heads.
If I recall, Mec4D is working on quote "a lot of things" and I expect they will be of top notch quality I have no doubt she'll get around to making stuff for G3M.
Leo 7 had a few good items as well as Scott 6. I don't do medieval, old-timey, or barbarian Roman renders so those kinds of clothing, which dominant the packs to date, aren't useful to me although I'm sure others might like them.
In the Gianni pack, the one sci-fi outfit I did try to use had a very difficult to use breastplate that deformed when my character assumed an action pose, rendering it useless for any of the most sedate renders. If I had bought it as an individual item, I would've returned it. It looked awful.
I can see the need for an occasional generic and plain hairless male figure, however lately the packs have lots of those. When there aren't a lot of characters of the masculine persuasion to begin with you begin to notice the similarities.
I really hope that Freak 7 if we do get him, has some more rugged and mature look to him. I need more rugged and less smoothly modell-y looking guys for the types of art I do.
Honestly I like the 7 vesions of Gianni and Michael better than their 6 counterparts hands down. Its not even close. I know why too. Between the narrow heads and really triangl-y torso all the non-teen men reminded me of bodybuilders who'd perhaps been using a few too many steroids for their 'gains'.
I mean If you like the muscley Mr Universe I can see the appeal, but it was hard to dial out in a way that the ladies big chest, tiny waist wasn't.
But yeah my aestetic is pretty much starving artist, like Egon Shiele level, so yeah I'm really liking that this generation every Daz Dude doesn't have a giant defined 6pack.
I'd like a giant defined six pack for one of them though lol.
I really like Michael 7, and I agree about the gen 7 male thin head problem. I also in general prefer gen 7 overall since some of the problems with the previous generation like the breasts and heads were fixed. So I am with you there.
I do think the Gianni figures included in the bundle should be more ripped though. If it isn't ripped it isn't Gianni to me. =-) But base Gianni 7 is fine.
Since the next characters are inevitably going to be teens, I'm guessing I'll have to look for non base ncharacters for more rugged muscular dudes.
I just am hoping for a few to have some stubble and be less shaved and waxed. Oh and a re-surfacing of Freak.
The thing is, the DAZ trend for the last two years has been been to increase price and remove content regardless of gender, so it's not just a male figure issue. After all, the number of items in both "Pro" and "Starter" bundles has been steadily decreasing since the introduction of Genesis 2, and the included poses that were coming with base figures have been dropped, yet in all three cases the price has jumped up from where it was at the introduction of Genesis. Thankfully, even before the Genesis 2 run was complete I had more than enough character DNA in my runtimes that I've seen no need to rush into buying G3 products on introduction, and, given the flurry of "get this at 70% off with purchase of X new figure" promos, I imagine that a lot of folks are doing the same as I am... waiting until the figures/bundles they want go on ubersale rather than buying on introduction unless it's something they have an immediate need for or if there's enough other stuff on associated sale at the same time to justify splurging on what have mostly been rather redundant figure bases. In my own case, the only G3 sets I've actually bought on release so far were Teen Josie 7 and Karen, while I literally only bought M7 and the G3M basic morph sets a week ago when they were nearly 75% off on uber-sale. If enough other folks are doing that, then DAZ is most likely setting the amount of time, effort and cost that goes into each product based on a "real" price tag in the 60-65% off full price range. Which, since doing male figure textures properly generally does require more work than a comparable female, means that what we're seeing with the barebones treatment of Gianni 7 may be the new standard for DAZ males.
