(solved) Struggle with material zones

Weekend – and I found a new problem to struggle with. This time: material zones.
I created a mesh and set 5 material zones. Imported into DS – and get 6 material zones.
Okay, maybe I forgot a FACE or two and Daz jumped in and created a sixth zone. Maybe one time. Maybe twice. But after the fifth import (of a newly exported 5-zone-OBJ) with the same (wrong) result, I'm sure: it's Daz, not me :)
The log said no more than 'everything is fine', no problem mentioned (importing, reading, imported).
Does anyone have an idea how to track down the cause? Is there an option to merge material zones in Daz?

Please show the list of surfaces/material groups in the modeller and in Daz Studio. If possible attach an example OBJ file.
If you switch to the Geometry Editor tool (Tools menu) and look in the Tool Settings pane, how many faces are assigned to the extra surface? If you click the + next to the surface name, what is selected in the model?

Daz adds: Wood1_XY.obj (part of the original Wood1 zone)
There are 1696 faces in this zone. 32 left in the Wood1. Yes, together is the exact sum of the original Wood1: 1728.
But may I ask: What is the significance of the number of faces? Or the list of the material zones?
They are just ways of seeing what is ebing added. I would suspect that there is an oddity in the OBJ file, material groups can be split up and my suspicion would be that all those Wood1_XY polygons are together at the beginning of the polygon list, which is adding extra characters in some way. What are you using for modelling? Does FBX export/import avoid the issue? Do you get the right material groups if you reimport the OBJ into the modeller?
Knowing why this is happening would be useful, but you can fix it in DS - click the + to select all of the misgrouped polygons (and no others) then right-click>Geometry Assignment>Assign To Surface>Wood1. You can then right-click on the empty Wood1_XY in the tool Setting pane and delete it.
Back in Blender, the new (Daz) material zones are used. But FBX was a good idea. A working one, I mean. Not that it should make a difference...
I already know that I must have done **something** to cause this + I would very much like to find out how the result came about. I'm just running out of ideas for troubleshooting. Wood1+Mech1 were each created from an independent mesh, joined (bridged...?) together using LoopTools. And Wood2+Mech2 (and ..3)? Are generated from Wood1 using ArrayModfier.
