Rumiko for G3F [WIP]

Okay, I've been posting hints and WIP renders here and there for awhile now, and I probably should get on with an actual thread for comment now that I've got the shape finalized, and I'm ready to get back to the textures. I hesitated to start a thread because I haven't officially submitted her anywhere, but I thought I might post a couple of my test renders and test the water a bit before I put a bunch more time into the project only to have her fall over dead in the first twelve hours.

So, I'm going to post several renders, and see what you all think, and what sorts of options I should include as far as makeup, eye colors, and so forth. For anyone wondering, she will turn up at whatever store with the glasses you see here, but not things like hair and clothing. As far as texturing, I'm only now in possession of the last piece I needed to make a "complete" set.

So when looking at these, be aware that the skin tone and details are subject to change.

Looking at options, I'm thinking of including a version of the current texture evened up somewhat as a more anime look, with appropriate shaders, and a much more detailed version for more realistic renders. The tradeoff would be the number of available makeup options. These are all Iray renders, although I will dig out a couple of her 3DL renders for those that want to see those. I'll post those right after the faceshot I'm working on now.

As far as eye colors, I current have the brown you see, Amber-ish, dark purple, brilliant green, and deep blue. Fingernails come in Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, Tourmaline and Amethyst. I'm tossing all the current makeup, as it didn't look as nice on the model as I thought it should.

So, let's have a look:

She looks interesting, nice but different face.

Her skin though to me looks a bit greenish and I really would like to see her face and eyes without the glasses.

I'm working on a render of the right side of her face now. It'll be a bit longer before it's done cooking.

    It's done!

  • Nice to see the first asian for G3F. but like scopio said it before, the skin is completely green (calibrated screen here). If it is the renders, do yourself a favor: redo the renders ;-)

But nice job you do, keep up this way

Looks very good, but I agree with the others about the skin color.

I'll see what I can do with the textures. Could be the white lighting that's inherent in the Iray setup for the environments reacting to the textures, or something else silly. I have a 3DL render for you below to see if that's any different.

There's going to be a pile of other fun stuff coming after Rumiko, including a special accessory for each character down the line. All the girls will be able to share their set, and the guys will have another. If I do it right, they'll all fit properly.

    Nope, that looks green too.

She is too green, but other than that she very nice! Any idea when she will be ready for release?

I agree with everyone else on the green skin. I also think the skin is to flat in the renders, needs a little more sheen, specular. I would also like to see more details in the skin and more pronounced brows, but that is just my tastes

I like the face morph, very nice, but the body does nothing for me, too pudgy, kinda like one of the DOA girls, LOL.

Nice job, good luck with her!

Agreee about the skin texture. I like the shape as is and the look (the popular but girl geek from Anime, especially mecha).)

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,085

While I'm not moving to G3F anytime soon, she looks really nice. I'm glad that while maybe some people will use her in anime style stuff, she'd look perfectly fine in other stuff, too.

And while the skin isn't great right now, you can always slap other textures on her. Though it doesn't help in the promo shots.

  • I look forward to the finished product.

These are the interim textures, so there's still some work to do. I'll see what I can do about them looking greenish. As for when she'll be ready, I can only guess right now. I'm hoping to have her in shape to be submitted sometime next week, assuming that I can figure out makeup...

Looks way too green to me too. Like, Incredible Hulk-green. Is there something wrong with the color calibration on your monitor, maybe?

I do like her face though. :)

Would someone mind putting up a screenshot? I seem to be missing something here.

Here you go...the skin tone in your avatar looks good, but it doesn't match the render of Rumiko at all. Do they look the same to you on your monitor?

According to the color picker in Gimp the avatar's lower cheek is RGB 190,126,88 while Rumiko's is 155,147,111.

The sad thing is she's the best Anime figure I have seen in years. Maybe targeting some of the specific steroptypes is the way to go. I think Rumio is good enough to do a bundle with. You should hit Stonemasonup to see if he has any new mechs in the pipeline. And a sci-fi outfit to go with it under his StreetWear label.Maybe two outfits -- one for the mech and one for the command center. Or three -- once for casual time. Then throw in a new hairstyle. I'd buy that bundle in a heartbeat (some kind of slice of life bundle would also work). Anyway, great character!! I hope you do a couple more Anime inspired ones. DAZ has yet to one that works well since A3 (maybe A4, but Aiko has turned into more of a gaming style figure).

The avatar isnt' a real good comparison, as it's the default V4 skin rendered in 3Delight under Studio 3.x back in 2009 for an action posekit that DAZ eventually rejected. I'll look at Rumiko's skin in a few minutes, but I think I'm going to do an outdoor render first to check and see if the lighting might not be causing it, or something wonky in my render settings.

I'm not sure Stefan would go for that, but maybe DAZ could work something out.

Anyway, time to check the inputs on her shaders and do another render with some different lighting before I muck about with her skin tone too much. If it's coming out green-tinted, I need to figure out exactly what's causing it rather than poke and hope.

Okay, I found a couple of things with her shaders, and then moved her to an outside scene for a 3DL render.

On the subject, what would you folks liek to see for eye/nail/makeup options, and should I do two versions of the skin tex for Anime/Photoreal renders, or stick to just one?

You might considered a face map with no eyebrows, or maybe a few eyebrow options.
  • DarkSpartanDarkSpartan Posts: 1,096

There's one I hadn't thought of, actually. I'll poke around with the brushes and see how it goes. I'd have to work out a set of possible colors as well. What do you suggest?

  • Oso3DOso3D Posts: 15,085
If you do it in LIE, you'd be able to let customers choose. And given hair is literally laid on top of skin, it should work reasonably well.
  • DarkSpartanDarkSpartan Posts: 1,096

I'll look into that. LIE is one of the features in 4.8 that I've not used as yet, so maybe it's time I got on with it. Now that I think about it, I might be able to use it to build out a few other things.

I'll get back to you on that after I figure out what it is that gave her skin that greenish tint in the renders.

The color picker data I was given suggests that she's a muddled olive/brown color, and that's not going to work. Whether it was the lights or specular problems, or whatever. It's entirely possible it was something in the color modifications I made combined with the natural tint of the original skin (which is at least likely), or some combination of elements. Maybe the most recent version is better, and maybe not.

Or maybe I just need to recalibrate my monitors and stop working on the textures with the sun in my face.

Ha! Well, again, I'm not in the market for G3 YET, but I love kibbitzing about stuff like this. When I've tried to make Asian skintones before, I found it best to have a pale amber base color and then the barest hint of green in glossy color.

I'll remember you said that. wink

Also, would it be worth the time and effort to do a second build for G2F? They'd most likely come out with slightly different looks...

Nope, it didn't help. She's not just "green-tinted", she IS green. Like a vegetable. It's not a normal human skin tone at all.

Is there a different computer or monitor you can use? I wonder, do you have red-green color blindness? Because you don't seem to be understanding how bad this looks (which is really odd, because you did a great job on her face IMO). I'm not trying to be rude, it's just that there's no way DAZ would sell this unless it was targeted for a sci-fi or fantasy audience, because with that skin tone she looks like a space alien or a demon or something. Not like a normal, healthy person at all (Asian or not). The skin tones in every single one of the renders in this thread looks completely, 100% wrong.

I'm going to redo the textures, as it looks like the base testure is where that particular problem lies. Not that I wasn't going to redo them anyway, as I need to add some things I missed when I put these together. Two monitors side-by-side, one on HDMI and the other connected to RGB, I can see a slight greenish tint to her skin on the second monitor, but it looks mostly right on the first. I'll see what I can come up with. I'll probably do some LIE presets as well for things like eyebrows, skin blemishes, and some new test makeups.

If there's anything you guys want in eye, nail, body hair and other such colors, I'm interested in seeing those, as well as options for accessories and the like.

No, it's not just a "slight greenish tint". You're really not understanding..... The screenshot I posted before, I was comparing your avatar with one of the renders. They're *completely* different colors. You can't see that at all?? Your avatar is a normal, slightly yellowish skin tone that is often seen in Asian people, while the Rumiko render is a pale green, almost the same color as asparagus or a brussel sprout, not a correct skin tone at all. They're *not* different shades of the same color, they are **completely** different colors! Can't you see how different they are?! They do not look the same at all.

Have you ever been tested for color-blindness? I'm serious, I think you might have it. Unless your monitor or your video card is really, *really* messed up. Maybe show them to a friend in person? It might be easier to believe them than a bunch of strangers on the internet. :)

8eos8 isn't being hyperbolic, for what it's worth.

Thanks, timmins.....I was starting to wonder if maybe I'm crazy :D

    Here's an interesting page I found: http://prometheus.med.utah.edu/~bwjones/2013/12/color-blindness-what-does-it-look-like/

There are three photographs of the same group of people on that page. If you're not color-blind, then you should easily be able to distinguish them. The second version of the photo shows what it would look like for someone with the most common forms of color-blindness, and the skin tones in it look pretty similar to me to the renders in this thread. As it says on that page: "In protanopia, there is a complete absence of red cone photoreceptors. The sky is still blue, vegetation is olive green and everyone skin looks deeply olive colored as well."

(Also, what color is my avatar? If you are color-blind, you probably won't be able to give the right answer!)
