I am brand new to DAZ 3D softwares. I thought it would be a fun way to dive into Bryce and get my learn on by importing some models I've previously built in Google Sketchup. But... I keep getting this error in Bryce when trying to import:

An unexpected error has occurred (generic failure).

Software Versions:
Bryce 7.1 Pro
Google Sketchup 8 (free edition)

Exporting items from Sketchup as .dae files. I am able to import other .dae files into Bryce that I have downloaded from TurboSquid.

Any help on resolving my import problems would be greatly appreciated.

Re-texture any surface with transparencies to remove the transparency map and opacity settings.
Export your model as obj. (ignore invisibles, collect maps)
Use a 3d party OBJ import plug-in for sketchup, if you do a Google search you will find dozens of them.
Sketchup native Collada export appears to be unable to import models from Daz Studio or Blender that were exported in Collada format.

Thanks Pendria, as I said in my reply to Frank, I have used all the edge tools, and you forgot to mention the chamfer tool under the surface modeling tab, they all make a difference, although It seems I am having to adapt my modelling to the smoothing angle in Daz Studio.

Personally I use many 3d creation apps. Wings, True Space 7.61 beta8 and Sketchup are on the top of my list, Hexagon I like as it has I feel, good work flow capabilities and a smooth interface, a lot of apps. including the the afore mentioned 3 all have the ability to alter this kind of real-time and rendered smoothing, wings even lets you designate hard and soft edges, but that is another track.
Unfortunately as far as I can tell Hex, does not have this ability, it has various real-time light set ups but no way to adjust smoothing angle on the materials. which is a shame since it works hand in hand with Daz Studio with the capability to "send to daz" and vice versa.
My conclusion is that Daz Studios 89.9% smoothing angle, for me anyway, is far to high although there must be a reason for it, I think maybe as it predominantly uses organic shapes ie. humanoid, animal, plant etc but I maybe completely "barking" up the wrong "tree" with that hypothesis :)

A case of trying too hard to get it right and not letting the software to do its job, it does not help that the original model I made was never intended for Daz it renders quite well in Bryce, Pov and Kerkythea,
Sketchup helps me model with very precise unit measurements easily you see, which I find important, not all 3d modelling software makes it quite so easy.
I was not planning to use it for Daz but am enjoying the lesson :)

As I figured bringho, being used to a different, lets call it "old fashioned" as I am, technique to produce a detailed model I am amused that I have to strip it down to make it look ok in Daz.
I wonder if anyone here uses Sketchup in their work flow to make props n stuff ?

Hello Daz Studio people

I am currently re-building a model of a ukulele that I made in Sketchup some months ago, I am mainly using Hexagon, with the intention of making a nice prop for Daz Studio and Poser, during the process I have come up against a few learning curves, as goes with understanding any new procedures. I made a post in the Hexagon forum concerning booleans and the way Studio handles them on "send to Daz"

At the moment I am trying to understand the way Daz Studio smooths objects on import, it seems that everything is defaulted to 89.9%, I am forever having to switch it down to around 45% in the surfaces tab.

As I say I have had to practically re-build it, as what I have found is my model, and my modelling approach is maybe too detailed and have had to take out loops etc. to adapt to this kind of smoothing.
I have not usually had to make a mesh less detailed to make it look smoother before :)

I wondered if anyone has had a similar experience and maybe will offer some words of advice and wisdom to help me finish this little project, I am hoping to give it away as a freebie. as I am the one usually downloading the free stuff.

That is pretty much true for all software is it not? If I build in Googles SketchUp only SketchUp users would get the same Size. Bryce or Hexagon or any other program would need a reference of some type would they not?

In fact I made the ukulele some weeks ago using Sketchup but as I wanted try and make a nice version for Poser or Daz Studio have had to practically re-build the darn thing, here is a cheap Bryce Pro render, just with materials, Bryce can be very forgiving on .obj imports.
If my old Dad had got me a Rickenbacker 330 instead of a uke I might not have been plodding around with 3D stuff and been very wealthy by now :P

Hexagon may be able to do this. Is Daz still giving it away fro free?

Also Sketchup can create text but the free version limits export of mesh as "kmz" for Google Earth or "dae" Collada file.

Daz Studio can read "dae" Collada file and then export it as an obj mesh. However it may not be a clean mesh.

I'll confess, I haven't put as much thought into it as you might be crediting me for; I started out with Gillman's Sketchup model, and even though there's nothing of it here, I used it as something of a templete to get started, and that's where the broad wedge of the entryway came from. It appears that the opening was wedge-shaped, just maybe not as wide an angle as modeled here. That's okay with me - I'm good with explaining it as making a more 'filmable' craft ;).
As for the front 'hatch,' yeah, nothing of what we saw ever explained how that could possibly work, or even account for a hatch ever having been there! The interior trim of the cockpit wrapped around and out the opening, making it fairly impossible to ever have something that sealed that space, and the overall design just never lent itself to anything that could either hinge away or slide into the existing bodywork. It's possible that the vehicle was only intended for temporal/dimensional travel and never meant to be a closed design at all - maybe the fins maintain its alignment with the timestream or whatever ;). With all the power this thing seemed able to channel, maybe it even had a limited transporter/replicator device with the sole purpose of creating or removing the entry hatch :coolhmm:. If one were to spend some time on adding details not seen (and therefore, not truly eliminated), I could see the little craft having a set of tripod legs, with part of the hatch swinging down with a stairway, but that still doesn't really explain where the upper half would go, unless, as postulated, it was split in the middle and each section could nest inside the hull on either side of the doorway (but then it probably wouldn't have the vital equipment right there in the panels of the open entryway ... )
Ahhh, Treknology ... nothing is ever simple ... ;).

Well, here's a quick WIP - I needed Lazarus's timeship for an image I'm working on, and found a good Sketchup model of it online by Gillman, but it just wasn't refined enough for me (I'm really picky, I guess ;)), so I decided to model it from scratch.

Still need to finish the interior, and this seat is a placeholder from the Sketchup model ...
