Hello,

I am totally new to Daz, my initial intention would be to achieve a similar result to the render image shown on the Victoria 7 page, like the one I am attaching below. My question is: If I buy V7 will I be able to achieve that same result or I need to get more items? I am talking just in terms of rendering quality (skin, etc) not about the hair, clothes.

If I need some other items, which ones would help me into achieving a similar result to the one in the image.

Any tip will be appreciated!

Harley's skin.  I started with the Clown Clan texture that was closest to Harley's makeup.  First problem is that The Clown Clan is for M4 and V4 and I was using Genesis 2 Female for my figure. I had to convert the skin from V4 to G2F.  First step, load the materials onto the V4 base figure and save the material as a .duf for use with later figures.  This is pretty easy and DS does all of the work here.  I just have to load the material onto V4 then go to: File>Save As>Material Preset.  To use on G2F, select Genesis 2 Female in the scene tab and the surface tab.  It should autoload onto the figure.  It will look really wonky!

Next you have to go to the Parameters Tab and almost all the way at the bottom you'll find UV set.  Select that and change the UV to V4.  You will need the V4 UV.  I got mine in Victoria 4 for Genesis 2 Female by MallenLane, a product specifically for that purpose.

Next problem is that I wanted to do the smeared paint look that Harley has in part of the movie.  While RawArt has a smeared paint look it wasn't quite like the version that Harley sport so I had to go into GIMP and do a little creative tinkering with the texture for the face.  I added some blue eye shadow for one eye and red for the other.  Then I did some smearing around the eyes and down around the lips with the Smudge tool.  It was kind of fun, actually, to mess up the makeup.  Just make sure to do the additional makeup onto a new layer.  If you mess up, it's fairly easy to go back and start over and you haven't really messed up your original image.  As an additional failsafe, the eyes were done on one layer and the lips were done on their own layer.  When I was done, I saved the face texture under a new name in a different directory because I didn't want to accidentally mess up the original face texture image.  RawArt does great work and I'll definitely be using his textures again in the future without my rather dubios talent for messing up his paint job!

You didnt state what gender but I'm going to make an assumption for female... These are the ones I can think of. Mostly you see that with black girls and hispanic girls.

So, I try with parameters tab, right button and Zero control and it seems to work eg for Victoria. I suppose that the reason is the one you have described.

Your friend was right about those people that use nothing but point and click presets to do everything, they are not real artitst.

Nope sorry, art is part what you do with your medium, whatever that may be, and then how it affects others emotionally or otherwise. Even being able to model and texture everything from scratch does not make one an 'artist', knowledge does not guarantee skill, nor does it imply any particular creativity or unique insight, it is the results and how they are received by the audience that matters. Stick figures can be art, a blank canvass with a red dot in one corner can be art, its all perspective. Not wanting to respect someones work because they built it out of readily available predesigned components is not a statement about art, its a statement about you.

I wonder why they would make such comments; perhaps what you're doing (the art you're creating) bother's them from an emotional artistic perspective, otherwise, why even bother?

The guy didn't know what software I used. We were discussing steps on how to start making an audience and steps to commissions. Things like that. And he said about daz. I kept silent about it. Mainly as I wanted information from him. I had assumed he wouldn't give it to me if I said I use daz for the female obj. Like I said, I rarely use products. I export Victoria 4 to cinema4d and use box modelling to make clothes. But lately. I have been using more in daz. I cant get the skin how I like it in cinema anymore and iray does it great. So I've been using daz to render. But hexagon to make hair and clothes.

Hello again all, does anybody know of any dress pants for Victoria 4/ G2F/ Genesis or G3F? Something to wear to the office with a blouse.

Yeah but the added bundles wheren't around that long, right? Seams like they where added then taken down in about a day. It makes me so sad that I missed the Girl 6, Giselle 6, Victoria 6, etc bundles and I could have gotten them for $7 each. And I think I could have gotten the Michael 6 bundle for $2.10! ahhhhhhh *head/desk* Missing out on that is definitely a heart breaker for me. 

Those were the starter bundles. You would have regretted buying them when a good deal on the pro bundles comes along.

Yep. Wait for the Pro deals. They're a much better deal if you're just starting to accumulate assets.

D'aww, shucks!  T'weren't nothin'.

Actually, what sells the look probably better than the morph is the texture set Beth Capsces made.  Originally sold at Poser Pros and has not been available since that store closed, Capsces created "feline" textures that could be applied to Victoria 3, Michael, shoot, all of the Millenium 3 figures since they all shared the same mapping.  She labeled it "Felis Sapiens" and the base pattern along with its variations were derived from photographs she snapped of her favorite cat, Mimi.  I used red/orange version for my depiction of Lt. M'Ress.

Beth later modified the set to fit upon Melody (and Micah), repositioning and reshaping the head textures so they would align with Melody's facial features.  That set is still available, but the head patterns won't align properly upon Aiko 3's face (or any other Mil' 3 figure).

I generally use the Human Essentials for Iray package for skin surfaces, but the eyes here might be Victoria 7 (Iray). I have reduced the opacity of the cornea to about 10% to allow more color through, but am not sure what else can be done for dark brown eyes.

What about the lights?

I will remain mum on Human Essentials, I've never used it.

I don't think its the cornea opacity that is the problem, its the lack of light in the eyes. They need some gloss, and some penetrating light.

IG Full Spectrum Lighting. I've treid everything I can but can't get any specular in the eyes. I shifted some lights around and, in my opinion, improved the light/shadows (this render is only at 2%). I am hesitant to add anything else that might add more light to the face.

 

Overall, it has improved drastically. I have strong feelings on emitter lights in general that I am going to remain mum about in this area other than to state that they can be quite difficult to work with when it comes to getting the right highlights in the eyes.

 

I will say this about emitter lights: they can be VERY slow and require more iterations.

I want to recommend Painter's Lights to everyone here...it is by far the most universal set of lights i have ever owned. I have never gone back, over and over, to a set like I have with Painter's Lights.  I am a DIY guy for the most part, but... not so much anymore with these.

Thanks for all your help on this. I'm going to call this one done and move on. I'll try a different light setup on the next one and see if I can get better results.

Argh too here ... I am long enough in the game to have even some of the Pro bundles, but for example I never even bought the Gia6 base ... now I could get the Starter bundle. But I spent money yesterday ... and now I would have to add another new release ...

Yep, I know what you mean, @Kerya. That would have been nice to have the option to choose from all those bundles yesterday. Having all those bundles added to the sale the second day, while nice for those who hadn't bought yesterday, is a bit of a mean "gotcha" for those who did buy yesterday. Of course that's not their intention, and having more options NOW is nice. I'm just stating the way it feels to me. This is my first time since starting here at Daz that I've had buyer's remorse. Now I have to debate whether or not to ask for a refund for yeterday's purchases and try and rethink what I would get. But who knows how long this sale will last and I'd have to wait until after receiving the refund before purchasing any of the other added bundles. I really don't know how long that would take to refund the money to my husband and my joint bank acount.

Which, while it comes out to slightly more,  I think I'd probably get more milage out of than the bundles I bought yesterday, as I rarely do male renders. 

However, if you and I end up doing our comic project (which I hope we do) then I WILL need the means to create some male characters. So in that case, I suppose it is a good idea that I went with the male bundles yesterday instead. It's just tough to see the bundles I've been wanting that have been on my wish list for months finally get down to a price where I could snag them, then it turns out I can't snag them after all.

Practially speaking though, I suppose my purchases yesterday would be better for the long run - given I don't have any other means of creating male characters other than a few freebie morphs which probably wouldn't get me far in creating diverse and interesting male characters.

It just kills me to have to pass up on the G2F Morphs, Girl 6, and Giselle 6 - since I've wanted them so long. Ah well, maybe I'll get lucky and they'll be that cheap again some day.
