  • Any recommendations to learn how to set up skin materials in Maya?

    Hello! 

    So the more and more I'm animating in Maya for my animation class, I am finding I love the program more and more. Now I'm learning all about constraints and I'm like I don't know how I can go back into Daz to animate anymore after learning how powerful constraints are, as well as regular stuff like the better IK and the graph editor. But, even if I click the convert materials to Arnold option when I bring the character over, it looks bad and I'm discovering that unlike Blender, there's as much information on YouTube for every little problem I encounter. Or maybe the terminology is different than what I'm using and I'm not googling the correct words which could 100% be the case. So I'm just wondering if anyone has any good tutorials that they've watched on how to do skin materials, whether it's for toon style or photo realistic as I do both, or is most of the materials done in Zbrush and brought into Maya? I was thinking that might be the case as well. I found stuff about hair on youtube and creating it, so I'm going to try that as well since no hair I transfer over with the bridge looks good either.

  • Genesis 8.1 looks broken

    That means "VO Xiao Mei" is the culprit, she has been distributed with a non-zero default value.

    To fix any ill-behaving (non-zero default value) morphs, do as follows;

    1. Open DS and load "Genesis 8.1 Basic Female" (to an empty scene)
    2. Right Click at Parameters Tab->Preferences->Choose "Show Hidden Properties" (part 3 zeroes only 'visible' dials)
    3. Right Click at Parameters Tab->Zero->Zero Figure (Zeroes the value of all the 'visible' dials)
    4. Right Click at Parameters Tab->Memorize->Memorize Figure (Sets the current value of all the dials as their default value)
    5. Edit->Save As->Support Asset->Save Modified Assets (Writes the changed default value to the morph files that were changed)

    When saving "Modified Assets" DS shows a dialog and asks for confirmation;
    "The following file(s) will be permanently modified:" - "Accept/Cancel" - Choose "Accept"

    It would be a good idea to send a ticket in so they can get in touch with the PA and issue a correction, then. Otherwise, I can see how that can become an unmanageable issue once your library grows.

  • G8M pose issue?

    This is caused by a character/morph that wasn't properly saved.

    If you're testing this on a clean library (meaning with no characters installed save for the Essentials) and you're still getting this issue, then re-download the essentials and try again. Also, ensure that you haven't installed anything through DAZ Connect (meaning that you didn't install a character through the smart panel inside of DAZ studio) as that saves out the data into a cloud directory that overrides the manual install.

    One way to check would be to load the Genesis 8 Base Male in a clean library and see in the shapes or parameters tabs whether other character dials appear. If they do, then that means they've been installed. If some character dials appear and you're still getting that weird bend, then that might tell you one of those characters may be causing them. You can try uninstalling them one by one (just remember to restart the program after uninstalling one character and checking again to see if the issue has been fixed).

  • How do you convert Rune 7's textures into Genesis 8.1s UV's and PBR skin shader?

    Does it absolutely need to be on 8.1 UV? You don't really get the benefit of it unless textures are made specifically for it, so you might as well just use the Rune 7 UV included in that product. If you're looking for a shortcut, you could always start with an 8.1 texture you like, switch to Rune 7 UV, and simply replace the diffuse maps. 

    Also, Map Transfer isn't the most intuitive feature to use, but once you've done it once or twice, it's really quite simple.

  • Gap with falsies eyelashes for genesis 8.1 female

    If the gap isn't there for the base G8F, then I don't think another product can do better, as it comes from the specific character morph.

    After looking in the file list, I reliased that it looks like it is using the default G8F eyelash mesh, i.e. that it just applies materials to the existing eyelashes.

    So in order to fix it, you need a corrective morph for that character - or a quicl fix like mesh grabber.

    Which character are you using?

    If there is a product that has morphs for the default eyelashes, then that might fix it.

    I'm using more and more content not acquired from the Daz store. These are items from CG Trader, TurboSquid, etc with .fbx or .obj formats which of course don't have morphs for characters. A hat or props like furniture I can make work but cothing is another issue. I've had no luck finding up to date information about how to use this feature in the available user guide and finding information elsewhere has been difficult as well. The only thing I found was a very old reference to a very old version of Studio on an outdated wiki. Anyone who can point me in the appropriate direction for documentation and/or tutorials regarding this would be greatly appreciated.

  • PowerPose face on male vs female - Something missing?

    I have written this for getting G8 expressions working on G8.1, but later found out that this also effects the Power Pose templates - If one does not do this, there are fewer dots on the G8.1

    Making the G8 base expressions (and any expressions that are using them) work on G8.1 requires removing dummy/placeholder expressions that are installed to G8.1 morph folders - These dummy/placeholder expression files have no other function than to prevent the base G8 expressions from loading. 

    The dummy/placeholder files are located in;

    ...\Data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 8\Female 8_1\Morphs\Daz 3D\Base Pose Head\ (255 files, can be more if you have additional DAZ expression packs)
    ...\Data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 8\Female 8_1\Morphs\Daz 3D\Expressions\ (24 files, can be more if you have additional DAZ expression packs)
    ...\Data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 8\Male 8_1\Morphs\Daz 3D\Base Pose Head\ (255 files, can be more if you have additional DAZ expression packs)
    ...\Data\DAZ 3D\Genesis 8\Male 8_1\Morphs\Daz 3D\Expressions\ (24 files, can be more if you have additional DAZ expression packs)

    Please make sure you are removing the files from G8.1 morph folders and not G8 morph folders.

    Note 1; If you are logging in to DS and letting DAZ Connect (within DS) to install/update your content, you may have these also in an other location that has "\Data\Cloud\" in it's path
    Note 2; Do not remove any files from "FACS" or "FACSExpressions" folders

    It should already have it.

    If you enable 'show hidden' and then select the eyelashes in the scene tab, and then show currently used, there should be a projected morph referring to the character.

    But as with clothing it might need adjustment.

    The quick way is with mesh grabber to get the eyelashes in place.

    The proper way is to dial the projected morph out, and send it into a modelling program, where you can make a correct morph. And if saved it should be given the same name as the projected morph, so DS consider that the projected morph.

    Okay i tried on a normal genesis and the gap wasn't there so it must be the morph of my character causing it i guess. I also aletered the texture cutout opacity.  but it did not fix the problem entirely. It did help a bit though.

  • How to morph hair poly groups

    Sometimes I want to take multiple objects and merge them into one for easier morphing in ZBrush, so maybe this process would help there...  All you need to do is export the objects you wish to combine from DS as an .OBJ.  Then re-import the new merged object and re-apply the correct textures.  Now, you can also take that same OBJ into ZBrush and make your changes and the morphs will be able to be applied to that new merged one in ZBrush.

    The benefit here is that you'll still have the polygroups retained.  Even if you didn't, though, you could always group them out in ZBrush as you need.

     

    The issue is that you are going to lose any auto-fit properties or any other existing morphs on those individual objects.  What I do with hair, when I have multiple parts, is to "pose" it out in DAZ, then export it out as a single object as described above, and then re-import for that one render.  I just hide the auto-fit hair, and then in my next render (I do comic panels) I can just un-hide my origional and re-pose it out.
