  • pwToon Error? - Renders in blue

    Greetings!

I've run across an error which shows up on my 64-bit Mac but not my WinXP 32-bit PC, but I'm not sure what the source is.

I use pwToon on a character or scene. It does fine. I light the scene, usually with Lantios' Day Lights because it gives a nice look to the settings I have. Or I can use a generic lighting set. After a few test renders, my renders will shade to blue, as if a blue filter was put across the camera.

Thinking that it might be a lighting problem, I'll switch to a generic light setup. Maybe one of 3dUniverse's Toon light sets or something. Still blue.

I'll save the file and restart my computer. I've used 3D packages long enough that I know weird things happen in memory sometimes and it's good to restart. Open the file again and it still renders blue.

Seems like a bug specific to pwToon. Maybe something with 3delight? Just wondering if anyone else has come across this and if there might be a fix available. I think I have the most up-to-date versions of both DS and pwToon.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I'd be curious about this as well. I recently set up a bunch of presets in pwToon but I'd consider adapting them to Visual Style as I think they would look quite neat. :)

  • Toon rendering: Getting an outline on the edge of a surface inside an object

Render is default. If you render through Cartoon, it will bypass the PWToon shaders and use the Cartoon setup, as far as I know. I'm sure more experienced Daz users can confirm this or explain it better than me.

You add the two together simply by "layering" them together. Obviously the outline has to be saved in a format that keeps transparency. You open your editing tool and you simply put the Outline in a layer above the PWToon render and finished. There is half a million tutorials on how to use layers in Gimp, Google is your friend there :]

    Attached is an outline result.

Edit: a format that keeps transparency is PNG for instance.

    Thanks a lot,

Could you perhaps upload a render of the image you get when you render using the outline script only?

When using PwToon and the outline script, do you set the render to default or to cartoon?

Also how do you add the two together exactly?

    Thanks a thousand,

    Me

  • Toon rendering: Getting an outline on the edge of a surface inside an object

Well, the basic thing as I said is to render 2 pictures:
    - 1 with the PWToon settings you want (the manual posted above helps a lot, but it's mostly tweaking around until you are satisfied)
    - 1 with the Outline which you get through Render Settings

You then compose the final images using something like the free Gimp or - I personally use Photoshop Elements, and there you go.

    That does look quite awesome!

Could you give a bit more detail on how you did that?

You use PWtoon and the outline from the scripted render (outline or outline compositor?)

Any specifics I need to do with the camera?

Do you use the PW toon shader only, or a specific version (classic cartoon, architectural outline eg)?

How do I define the outline camera it asks for when rendering this way?

Guess I'm sold on your workflow :)

    Thanks a lot,

Well the only manual I know is there.

The interior line is quickly very strong, which is why it's set up as grey originally.

To clarify on Outline, I do use PWToon, I simply add the outline from the Render settings on top of it instead of the PWToon outline - so basically I use PWToon shadows mainly. Here's a pic as a result. Not trying to convince you, just telling you what I experienced :]

    Good luck.

  • Toon rendering: Getting an outline on the edge of a surface inside an object

    Thanks for the reply!

I still don't get the outline though....

I feel the result PwToon gives me is still to good to leave behind, after all, it's only the inner outline that's missing...

Is there any tutorials or manuals available on that product?

Does anybody know what the "angle" slider is for? Or does anybody know why there is no option called "Interior Line Width"?

There is an option to toggle "Draw Interior Line" on and of, but I don't realy know what all of these optiosn do exactly... I'm playing around to find out, but if there were a manual, that would be nice...

Please keep me posted if any one finds a solution to this,

    thanks a lot,
    Me

  • Toon rendering: Getting an outline on the edge of a surface inside an object

Not sure why PWToon does not draw it.
However, after experimenting for quite a while, I recommend making a test with the Outline available in the Advanced Render Settings options.

Under "Render Engine", switch to Scripted 3Delight and select Outline. I've found this was often more reliable than the PWToon ones, even if it means having to add both layers in a separate tool.

Hopefully this will help, or at least offer an alternative.

    *snipppppyy*

I don't have animate, though. And I can't keep spending money. Does DS come with a free "lite" version of animate2? Would that be usefull for a car, anyway? The AM Limo has a wheel spin dial I think. It would seem to be a pain to keep changing that every frame, though. Perhaps it wouldn't matter with the pwToon shader applied, I don't know.

    Dana

Yes it is in a tab called Timeline, if you open it you will see a series of little blocks where you set (and delete) keyframes with the lil buttons with key icons :)

The Timeline is the timeline, Animate Lite appears as aniMate Lite - and no, without aniBlocks it wouldn't be very useful for a car.

Thanks, I kind of thought so. But is aniMate Lite free with DS? I guess I'll just have to fish around and find out. There were some free aniBlocks, but I don't think any for the AM Limo.

    Dana

Am sure I'm gonna be sorry asking but what I see (when they are open) is two tabs, aniMate 2 and Timeline. I have a code for aniMate but not for Timeline. When I use Timeline I set keyframes for each item selected in the Scene Tab using the buttons with key icons on the timeline , and if I want to save the keyframes at arbitrary frames I save them as poses. Having a code for the aniMate tab is no help there. The aniMate tab behaves as if it extends the functionality of the Timeline tab. It isn't intended as a replacement for the Timeline Tab, correct?

It'll be interesting to see how this ends up.

Hopefully something like this once I get the adaptive sampling render settings right :)

Is an eight hour + render for 174 frames so I'll have another go around overnight

    So it's an animation?

    Dana

Scene from a short (indi) film

I want to try a simple animation in DS. Car going up hill on a mountain...trees and road and some foreground grass and weeds that stick up and pass by as the camera keeps pace with the car. I don't know if I can do it or not. I want to use pwToon on the scene, too.

    Dana

Sounds really do-able in Studio, do yourself a favour and render in lowest possible rez while you get the movements right :)

I've done a few brief animations.. yeah, 320x240 is good to check motion and such, run with a high shading rate to start, beware fancy lighting and high reflection counts.

I've done flybys at 30fps, 10 seconds, that took 45 min to render - which is decent for any render engine. Your proposed scene is far more complex, though, and will take quite some time I imagine.

DS's Timeline is a PITA, it needs ease-in/ease-out curves for motion but you can fake it with a carpload of keyframes.

    Best of luck!

Volumetric light throwing some weird optical illusion here  Nothing OOO with the geometry...

Odd. I like the lighting, though!

Didn't happen again so... A ways to go yet but getting there

It'll be interesting to see how this ends up.

Hopefully something like this once I get the adaptive sampling render settings right :)

Is an eight hour + render for 174 frames so I'll have another go around overnight

    So it's an animation?

Scene from a short (indi) film

I want to try a simple animation in DS. Car going up hill on a mountain...trees and road and some foreground grass and weeds that stick up and pass by as the camera keeps pace with the car. I don't know if I can do it or not. I want to use pwToon on the scene, too.

I have no idea what the base/blank shader is? I click on a surface, and double click the VSShader in the Content Pane...it applies.

Anyway, glad pwToon worked for you. I used it a while back, and I liked it.

I just ran DS to look it up, it is the "Visual Style Base" and followed the docs and I was able to get the look I wanted. Once I learned to control the shader I was able to apply presets to hair, for example, and knew what settings to change to get a better look.
