This 61 Chevy Impala SS is a mid poly Sketchup model, nice mesh, and I rigged the doors, wheels, hood and trunk. I really like the colors bringing it up to modern days. The stock hubcaps gives it that extra edge.

    :-)

thnx for the compliment it's about time i saw my 61 impala shared on another site took me 4 hours to paint but it turned out great workin on a lamborghini now will upload in a day or two

Here is another one I did of usherstang's 61 Impala.

  • Any cars like this?

This is the only one I'm aware of that's out there... http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=ca6baf5768bc105ace827f20895c88ad&prevstart=0

It would need some work done to it I suppose, pretty much like buying an old one in real life, hehehe

I knew Tommie loved her truck. I especially like the chrome bumper shader...awesome. My only critique here is out of all the freebie links, only four sites were listed. Way too many from Sharecg. Makes it too easy. Still allowed though. Nice render.

interesting render Tramp, I like it but I think by the girls shape, I think she is more of a teenager than a kid. she does look happy to be sitting on the pick-up though.

Tommie is a teenager. She's 17 when I first introduce her in the comic I'm trying to write.

  • Carrara 9 feature request

Quickly scanned the thread and didn't see this; if it's already been mentioned then forgive me.

    >> support for the 3d mouse from 3D Connexion

I recently discovered Carrara after years of playing with SketchUp and using a 3d mouse; using just the keyboard is a big adjustment.

    - - - -

Also, a quick question that could lead to a wish:

Included support for more CPUs? I'm on a quad-core iMac and when I render Carrara shows 8 threads working; is each thread considered one of the 20 permitted CPUs? I'm considering purchasing a MacPro with 12 cores once they are released and wonder whether that would exceed the limit?

    - - - -

I agree on the need for a UI overhaul. I'm on a 27" iMac and the menus and tools and all are tiny.

    I always forget SketchUp.

You may also be interested in Voidworld, it is free and can be used for commercial work. (Voidworld was recently (February) renamed as NVIL and became a need for purchased license).
You can download Voidworld(Free) from:- http://voidworld.cmcproductions.co.uk/index.php?topic=1320.0
Voidworld is no longer updated, but it as only been 8 months since its final release, and gives you access to hundreds of modeling tools/functions. The default UI is certainly not the greatest, but you can change that, as there are radial menus/hotkeys/user buttons (or combination) that can be used with, or instead of, the default UI.

Thanks Chris. I always forget SketchUp. I haven't played with it much since the @last days. It's unfortunate the Pro version is priced so high and the free license does not allow commercial use (which will probably be widely ignored).

    http://www.sketchup.com/products/sketchup-make

I have not played with it in a while (not since Trimble acquired it from Google) but there used to be lots of free plugins available:
    http://sketchucation.com/resources/plugin-store-download

As I recall the free version was limited in importing/exporting to common 3d formats, but you could get a free plugin to that would do it.

    EDIT
Trimble changed the licensing. Unfortunately the free version cannot be used for commercial work.

My modelling skills are...well...not much to write home about.

    :red: thanks <(^_^)...</p>

... practice is all you need - and learning what your tools can do for you in a timely fashion. That last thing is what I'm still crawling up the learning curve on - in 3D, there are _many_ ways to achieve a particular goal, which is to put the verts in 3D space to represent something recognisable. Selection of one tool over another (Blender? Hexagon? Sketchup? Wings3D? TrueSpace? 3DCoat? DS primitives?), then selection of one mechanism over another (bezier curves with bevels? NURBS? voxels? straight subdiv modelling and pushing single verts about in space?). Some of those ways are more time-consuming than others... no "Make Object" button yet (3D printers and scanners notwithstanding... ;-) ).

The vajra has been a good exercise for me (and I hoped other modellers might jump in and try too...), because it's mostly symmetrical, which means the Duplicate Linked feature can be used to make three of the arms as identical copies of the fourth (when the fourth is edited, the other three automatically change shape to match). I had to use Duplicate Linked here because the arm is made up of separate components, which I couldn't find a way of temporarily grouping together to apply an Array modifier to (modifiers work only on specific objects, not a combination of three curves and a mesh... X). The components that make up the arm use the Array modifier (so there's really only one makara that is duplicated at 90deg intervals - trivial to change that to 60deg intervals, or 45deg intervals) and a couple of curves with custom bevel shapes, the base of the arm and the knob on the end are made using the Screw modifier (the parts that are really just 'lathed' 360deg sections), and the eight lotus petals have also been placed on the base using an Array modifier. In fact, the only thing I really "modelled" there was half of a lotus petal (using the Mirror modifier to make the other side, and then a Subsurface modifier to "smooth it down a bit"). If you think you might find it useful, I can break the construction down with a few screenshots.

I was quite surprised at how well all these modifiers got through to DS though - I was half expecting to have to apply the modifiers and do a lot of manual cleaning-up, but the exporter turned out something pretty reasonable (^_^)d.

...let's put it this way. my modelling skill is so bad, it makes Hanna Barbara .look like ILM. I'm used to getting a lump of clay and turning it into something. 3D Modelling proggies still deal with concepts that are less than intuitive for the task at hand.

Thank you and for the record, I did a search of game show type models, you either have to pay through the nose (turbo squid), figure out how to convert sketchup files or make your own set.

Music ruled that items from the Google/Trimble 3D Warehouse are ineligible some months back. So SKP/DAE files are not going to be useful.

EDIT: Discussion and decision was made during the Jan 2012 "Let It Snow" Freebie challenge for those interested. http://forumarchive.daz3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=180163&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=140

  • 10 Reasons Why This Noob Is Considering Purchasing Carrara 8.5

I also am amazed at how powerful Carrara is at it's price point.
I am currently working on and have almost completed an educational video that is one hour long,
of which 20 minutes is computer animation. This is a labor of love which I hope to profit from.
I don't think it would have been possible without Carrara.
I have taken film courses, but not computer animation. ( 60-80 % of this project is HD Video)
I tried blender, and at that time the interface was just to confusing for me to get started and learn.
I had started modeling in Sketchup, and Alibre and importing, but I learned Carrara enough to Model
pretty much anything I need. Being able to model and animate in one program is huge for me.
I've spent 100's of hours on this project, hiring an animator was not an option.
Buying one of the high end programs ( I would love to have Inventor and Maya) was not an option yet.
Between the over 700 page manual ( yes it does not cover the latest releases) youtube video's, and some kind patient
people in this fourm I have been able to do an incredible amount of work. ( FOR MY NEEDS) If I can visualize it. I can do it.
This includes rotoscoping, and rendering many layers rendered with alpha channel for compositing in my video editing program.
There is blender, ( just can't wrap my head around it) and much more expensive stuff that I can't yet afford.
I too am surprised at the intense negativity often posted on this forum.
It does seem common in this internet age.
I think Daz is in a tough position. They are competing with FREE ( blender) The people that write code for Blender are working for FREE,
Everybody today wants stuff that's FREE.
I do not do character animation so I have no use for any content Daz sells, but my GUESS is it is the content they sell that keeps the lights on and pays for Carrara's development.
Glad to see they got a new version out and pleased to see they added a feature I wanted and suggested.
