  • Realistic Renders... NOT!! 12 "And we're back in the room!"

    Rogerbee said:

    Great renders Kyoto,

One can hardly tell the make of MiG at that distance, all you can really see is a great looking render. Where did you get the Antonov from?

Nice render of the Harrier too, such a shame they got dropped in favour of the Apache.

    CHEERS!

...the AN-225 is actually one of the few .obj downloads I could find in the Sketchup Model Warehouse. Most of models there now seem to be available in Sketchup format only. Not sure if they are purging the .dae/.obj downloads to make it exclusively for Sketchup users.

Yeah sad about the Harrier. Remarkable aircraft. Really changed the rules of aerial engagement with it's unique manoeuvreabilty. Yeah the new Sukhois and MiGs can make some impressive moves but nothing beats full thrust vectoring. A rotorcraft just doesn't have the speed or weapons load advantage to make it a "true" replacement. The entire fleet of retired UK Harriers ended up with the US Marines who themselves are looking at the F-35B as a replacement which has been experiencing some serious "teething pains" during development.

Ironically the F-35B's VTOL capability is being developed with data purchased from Russia's Yakovlev Design Bureau (Yak 141 NATO Codename "Freestyle"). So, not only are we depending on our former Cold War rival for getting into space, now we're consulting with them on advanced fighter design.

Meanwhile, the main engine trust vectoring system is supplied by none other than Rolls Royce. Considering their experience in this matter at least one component of this so far flawproned (and over budget) project will be solid.

Since the AV8's and UK Harriers are scheduled to be retired, maybe that fellow who bought the seven million Pepsi Points will be able to get one (non flightworthy of course) to put in his driveway after all. Give it a cool flame paint job chrome wheels and I'm sure it will draw attention from those who pass by.

  • Help -Sketchup 3D models to Bryce

Dave- I downloaded a smaller model and it came into Bryce in the default gray, and remembered you saying:

Now I know what you meant, but it will keep me busy this weekend

@mermaid010 - if your laptop sports at least 4 GB, consider using LAA to make Bryce use up to 3.5 GB. As I figure from Dave's comments, the mesh might be too big for 2 GB or less of memory.

I tried the LAA after the 1st crash. You helped me with the “Out of memory” issue a few months ago when I had problems with one of David’s tutorial – I think it was the super reflection tut – not sure. This time Bryce crashes after 50% into the import. There is no "Out of memory" message. Thanks for mentioning it.

    Rashad -Thanks for this tip.

Tjeb – thanks for sharing. That model is awesome.

  • OBJ/MTL import to Daz Studio - revisted question

    rol3d said:
I'm running into the same issue as some others with materials not loading.

    Environment: Windows 7; Daz 4.6.0.18

I DL'd this gas station on sharecg: http://www.sharecg.com/v/34828/gallery/5/3D-Model/gasstation
I converted it to an OBJ via http://www.greentoken.de/onlineconv/ which gave me an OBJ and an MTL.

The OBJ loads no problem as a gray model. I've tried a couple of things, but I can't get the materials to load.

    Thanks for your help!

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it is probably the online exporter you are using, I read a thread a while back where someone found a site like that and people basically told them to use other methods, the results were never really that good.
I used to have trouble converting LWO files... they seem to be hit or miss with the textures, especially with the newer versions (7+)... I don't really think a lot of the conversion methods do the lightwave models justice. I used to use (I forget which) either PoseRay or POV to convert older LWO files... (it was probably PoseRay, because I'm a Mac user and PoseRay is Windows only and I used to have to use my old Sony laptop to convert the files)... you might want to try that, especially if the model is fairly simple.

Edited to add... Did you check the actual OBJ files to see the texture names match?

For example, here is a bit of the OBJ file from one of my models:

    vt -11.615625 3.498863
    vt -11.634375 3.906096
    vt 13.170851 3.179774
    vt 13.016398 4.005964
    vt 13.016398 3.164523
    vt 13.170851 3.990712
    vt -6.862940 -7.526053
    vt -6.776430 -7.680658

    f 27461/17425 27462/17426 27463/17427

The program reading the OBJ file will use the MTL file to locate the texture called "M1818L_Galvanized_VT.jpg"

If it is even slightly misspelled like say "M1818LGalvanized_VT.jpg" or "M1818L_Galvanized_VT", the program reading the OBJ will not be able to find it. I frequently hack my OBJs to fix messed up material names that don't come out right in Poser... I make many of my models in SketchUp and tweak them in Blender, but since I have to export in Collada first, I lose all my Material names ( Image based texture names get messed up too sometimes) because the Collada exporter changes them all from normal names like "SteelSupport_Blued" to useless ones like "ID38383".
Sometimes convertors like to change material names... like say from "OakBark dark" to Oak_Bark_Dark" or something like that, or they cut off a character or two.

Wow Dave, it looks awesome. Did the model come in with the materials?

I tried with the .dae file but Bryce still crashes 50% into the import. The model I exported from Sketchup is 48.1mb and the .dae I downloaded is 18.5. Bryce crashes with either one. I think it’s the complexity of the model and my Laptop, it’s not too powerful.

Anyway I will try with one of the other smaller models of the Colosseum like the one Tjeb mentioned above.

    Thanks for your help

how do I make it visible online a model allowing you to rotate and resize it? I remember a plugin that allowed me ... but do not think I ever used and I forgot. In what format should I save a template to be visible? I would need instructions - step by step.

migenius makes a plugin for google sketch that allows this functionality, it's used on the Sharecg.com website so it is either dedicated to models made outside of sketchup or it converts them for viewing.
How it works is would be a possible google search or a question for the sharecg forums.

It is simply the complexity of the model I think.
I have downloaded it and it did load into my copy of Bryce, but resizing/moving it is causing Bryce to be very slow and unresponsive.
At the moment I am trying to 'Land Object' and it's been unresponsive for 10 minutes. I will give it 30 minutes before I force quit it.

For information: I did a direct download of the .sae file not the Sketchup file. I did try the Sketchup file first but it even took 5 minutes to load into Sketchup and when I exported it, it took a further 10 minutes before crashing Sketchup leaving only a partial collection of material files in the folder I created to export it to.

    Hope this helps. :)

Thanks Cdordoni and Tjeb for your input. I will check both suggestions.

Dave’s (TheSavage) suggestion worked. I managed to export from Sketchup and import the .dae file into Bryce --a few small files, like the dog I mentioned earlier and some other animals. It’s just that Bryce crashes with big files like the Colosseum and other buildings models that I downloaded this morning.

It’s only when I scale the model in Sketchup before exporting it that I have a problem. Obviously I’m doing something wrong.

Tjeb, your Colosseum render is lovely, thanks for sharing.

    Thanks everyone.

You could try a different approach:
    - Download Sketchup Pro. Don't buy it, just download the trial version.
It will give you some hours evaluation time, enough for converting lots of models; because that is what you do:
import the .skp model, check for unwanted items, like a floor, trees, whatever, then export to .obj

    - in my example (I hardly know how to use Bryce) I used the colosseum model from 3dHH.
    - if you want a more detailed one, let me know; the third picture is a Blender file. (That is: if the forum is not reversing my sequence)

You could try OBJ or another format if you can't get DAE to work.

The SketchUp free version does not save OBJ as I recall and is very limited in its export formats; however, there are free plugin that import/export additional formats. Go here http://sketchucation.com/resources/plugin-store-download

I think the model is big. I tried with a dog model and it worked. I down-scaled the Colosseum model in Sketchup and then exported it but I got a blank .dae and no material folder.

You are right the 3D Warehouse has awesome models.

    1. Save imported items as an asset - File>Save as>Support Asset>Figure prop Asset.

    2. Scaling will be inherited by a parented prop, but if you want to inherit morphs you need to make it a figure - doing that with something like a bracelet, assuming it is made to line up with the zeroed figure, is trivial; Edit>Figure>Transfer Utility..., set the figure (Genesis or Genesis 2 Female, presumably) as the Source and the prop as the the Target, then click Accept. Items like a sword that project a long way out from the figure are apt to be a bit fiddlier as they will probably not get a uniform weight map - you will probably want to use the Polygon Group Editor, from the Tool menu, to combine all the finger and hand groups into one hand group and then give the whole item a uniform weight of 1 with the Weight Map Brush tool (just right-click to get to to (and you will probably want to right-click with the Polygon Group editor and select Polygon Assignment>Create Rigidity Group to stop the auto morphs from distorting the item).

    3. and 4. Sorry, I don't use Sketchup.

Hello all. I'm looking to use daz as a character builder, with sketchup as an accent to create my items, all for personal use.

a few questions, if you please

    1. How do I position and save my new items for permanent use from within daz?
Ex. I create a wrist band in sketchup, next I want to click on it's pic in my daz library and have it load onto the genesis model's wrist

    2. How do I add the auto-fit parameter to my new item, thus allowing it to auto scale with the genesis model?

    3. What causes certain items to not fully import into daz?
Ex. I created a sword in sketchup and when importing into daz only the lower half of the hilt came in. (.dae)

    4. (cont. from 3) If file type, can anyone recommend a good/free import/export plugin for sketchup, preferably without having to create a new account.

Thanks for your time and help, I'll be asking more questions on this same thread later, such as dynamic clothing, easy way to add materials to items, etc. as I find I need help.
