Question on Import 3DS (New Bryce User)TheSavage64 said:theschemer said:Hi Byrcers, :-)
I just bought Bryce yesterday so I am a complete noob for now but had an important question. I was trying to import some free 3D object files to see how that worked and ran into a few snags. I tried some Collada files from Google Warehouse and they failed to import with a "Generic Error".
When importing from Collada files, it is important to tick the little box at the bottom of the "import object" window that says "SketchUp dae". Most of them also import without textures and are usually a lot more work to re-texture in Bryce, but sometimes they are worth the work.As Horo says .OBJ files cause the least trouble, but potential problems can be minimised by making sure the .OBJ file is placed in the same folder as the .mtl file and textures. Although Bryce does read the .mtl file (if there is one) it will always ask you to find the texture pictures if they are not in the same folder.
Hope this helps.
Savage,
That helps. I was using the wrong Collada selection and when I switched to Sketchup, it works. I will check the .mtl files issues next.
Thanks,

Importing buildings into BryceGussNemo said:@Bruce: Those are really nice buildings. And the church is really looking nice, would like to see it again when you've finished.I showed this church to others on another site, and it occurred to me it would be good if they saw it before I put it back together. The first image is how this .3ds church imported into Bryce. The second image is another different material on the church. While this material obscures some of the church features, I think it does look rather nice. Especially with a different roof material.
A thought occurred to me (always dangerous when that happens).
The other day I imported a sketchup model and as I was re-matting it in Bryce I needed to move one component. When I ungrouped the model and tried to rotate it on it's Y axis, it didn't rotate around it's center. I got Attributes and clicked Show Origin Handle and for whatever reason it was well away from it's own center. So my thought is: I wonder if you can ungroup the church then by selecting each component click Show Origin Handle to see if they have a common center. If that is the case, you should be able to just set each origin to 0, 0, 0 and it will put itself back together.
I can't test that at the moment because I'm on with a long render, but it may be worth checking out Guss.Show Us Your Bryce Renders! Part 6For 3D text, I always use Google Sketchup (Sketchup is also free).
It’s very simple, just choose 3D Text, click on screen, type whatever text you want, choose the font you want (all the fonts on your system are available), save the result as a .dae and import it into Bryce. Once in Bryce, you can ungroup each letter to move them individually and texture them up individually if you want.I’ll be back later to explain how I got the lettering on the Razor Blade
Thanks very much Dave.

Problems in importa a .dae fileOk guys thanks for all the answers and excuse me for not responding them before. Now, i exported the file in .dae then i converted it in an ,obj file. It works in DS but i don't know how to load also the textures: when i save the as dae, sketchup gives me the .dae file plus a folder with all the textures.. What shall i do?
Content Library - An easier way?I've been testing the trial version of PzDB from Rocketship3D (also available at Rendo) which does a full scan and categorization automatically for Poser, Carrara, DS4, Bryce, VUE, etc, .and lets you drag and drop them into the appropriate programs. To be honest, I'm finding that the current version 1.25, is rather sluggish but I also have insanely huge installed runtimes and the upcoming version 1.3 coming out is supposed to be much better, as well as handle files for just about every major software pack under the sun, including oddball stuff like Google Sketchup and Anime Studio, There's a sixty day free trial so you might want to give it a shot.
Is hexagon good modeling program?wburton72 said:Time investment is my main issue.
If you asked that question 8 years ago, I definitely would have recommended Hexagon. Now, I would recommend Modo (if you have deep pockets) or Blender. The learning curve will be steeper with those than with Hexagon, but you're (almost) guaranteed years of feature development and support. Now, you did not tell us what type of work you plan to do, as some programs handle some types of projects better than others. I'd also look at:
