CAR AND BIKE LOVERS THREAD - MARK III
Got the new Sketchup Make 2014 you mentioned Betsy. Sadly, it is just an 8 hour demo of the Pro version. Once time runs out, there will be no .obj or .3ds exports. I also didn't notice any change in smoothing with it, I still had to take this into Poseray to smooth it. This 41 Willys is nice but just a skin on frame pieces, the tires have been around for a while, but still I love them...lol. Motor is a chevy corvette in this Ford. Rear window has some real issues with being mixed with the body top, so one side comes up the color of the top. If I could punch the widows out, I could create new ones. Looks like a Bryce boleen thing needed. I had to make a steering colume and a gear shift rod. The shifter knob is there, but it too is zoned with the color of the car's top. Still a nice car for a distant render. Here it is all "shaded" up.
:-)
Importing Sketchup .dae filesAnd after the Pro trial period is over, you can still use Sketchup 2014 as the free version. Only without all the additional export formats.

For the next few days I'm going to download what I like from Sketchup.warehouse and then install the 2014 Pro and convert the files to objs. I think the trial version is for 3 or 4 days. For me that's the easiest way to covert sketchup models to objs.
good idea
trial is for 8 days - and it goes per min.
so you could use it a long time !
Thanks for the additional information. :)Importing Sketchup .dae filesmermaid010 said:Thanks Bigh and Guss for all your help.Since I am not into modelling, I'm going to take the easy route. ;)

Importing Sketchup .dae files@mermaid: If you go to Sketchup.com you can download the free version of Sketchup 2014. Installation walks you through registering the free version so you can use it as the free version. There's a plugin manager, which you can download at Sketchucation.com, which helps find and install plugins. Go to Resources, Plugin Download and the download button is at the top of the screen. When you open Sketchup 2014, after installing it and all the rest, you'll see a small window with three gem like icons in it. That window was floating after I installed it, but you can dock it to any space available. Clicking on the left gem icon will open the Plugin Store where you can search for any plugins you're after.

I need to download the free version of Sketchup 2014 as the plugin does not work with Sketchup 8I don't have link - you can download it from sketchup warehouse .
the plugin works for me in skup 8 - it under file ( close to the bottom )tip - what I do
download model
make folder with same name ( or a name to tell me what it is )
drag sk model into folder
open skup - open sk model
start obj plugin ( obj will be same name as sk file - with all the texture )
that way every thing is in the same folder for Bryce or what program you are going to use.
some times you will have to find the texture what loading the model - they will all be there .
hope this helpThanks for the explanation but it does not make sense to me, my comprehension is waning with each passing day. I put the plug-in in the plugin folder in the sketchup folder in the program file. I think I will pass on this and play with abstracts. ;)
toot toot - was made using 3 model
train
tracks
train station

CAR AND BIKE LOVERS THREAD - MARK IIIHeres a couple more cool pix I couldn't resist doing, I'm actually able to rework some of the sketchup downloads on my new (to me) computer, speaking of sketchup, Sketchup2014 as it turns out is a very nice program, it also comes with the ability to export .obj files, as well as a host of other file extensions, so I can finally let Sketchup8 go the way of the dinosaurs, so right from sketchup to blender, and even the smoothing operation works differently now, I no longer have to use all the applications of Blender to smooth a former sketchup model, its already done when you export the model out of sketchup, makes things much easier, such as Bethany's Willy's Gasser!

Because I don't use Sketchup on a regular basis I wasn't sure how to get that plugin. So it took a bit of searching but I found it. And a bit more to discover where that plugin shows up and how to use it. But by golly, it works. It converted a Sketchup test object into .obj format.
thank you

also Ultimate Unwrap which I have been using a lot lately to decimate animated FBX files and convert directX files for iClone and Carrara imports skp via a plugin and is cheap
it supports more formats than any other program I have encountered most the game ones too and does uv mapping.
Autodesk 123D does skp too
you know of Blender already.thank you for the info !
