I pinned and made the thread an announcement for you

@frank0314, there is already another pinned announcement thread. We didn't need a second one. It just causes confusion. The other one was started first. I suggest this be merged into that one.

The other one is not focussed on the PA freebies and is in the Freebies forum.

OK, thanks for the clarification. I was clearly confused by the two of them and didn't see a difference.

  • farewell carrara

I often forget that English isn't your native tongue. Sometimes its fairly obvious, other times (like what you just said above) it's better than a lot of English speaking folk.

I'm very glad that you're here, doing what you do. You have an Excellent eye for your art. You also contribute really well with the community!

I completely agree about the control thing. That's one of my favorite things about Carrara. I mean, it not only gives the control, but the controls are right there, easy to use, and even better... they Work!

I know that there's a market for this software and for Bryce. The forum is one thing, but there are so many more people that don't even use forums, but have and use Carrara. My brother is an amazing engineer and his company sends work to a small animation shop to make videos for their presentations. He (my bro) thought that it looked a lot like the stuff I do, so he brought one home and showed it to me. I asked if they use Carrara. After asking the company, they confirmed it. It's such a magical suite of 3D tools and nothing else is quite like it, since they added support for Poser/Daz 3d figures, props, poses... the whole nine yards.

I know I'm crazy, butI'm still optimistic. I have this crazy gut feeling that some day Daz 3d is going to put Bryce and Carrara back into development. All I can say is, keep asking for it in surveys and polls!

  • How do I import an underlay image

I'm looking to import a 2d underlay background image into daz to use as a refrence guide for posing a figure. After spending way too much time trying to find information on how this is done with no luck, I figured it'd probably be faster to ask the forum.  Can someone either show me where to find the tutorial on this or walk me through how it's done?

    Thanks

Agreed. I'm seeing that the Hide items I own as well as the MAture cotnent flags don't seem to be consistently doing what they say they are on the search results.

Is your avatar from a coming Genesis 9 toon product?

  • Recommended listening: The Crypto Story by Bloomberg's Matt Levine

No, the room's not empty... I was hiding in that crate of used sweat socks... I don't really reply to anything in this forum anymore because it usually goes poof...
I'm wondering if there is a particular section or episode that's more relevant to the "something behind the smoke and mirrors" part... At this point I don't think there is much more for me to learn about crypto that would change my (non-positive) opinion... but if it's a particular thing I could go to, I'd be interested, at least to see if it's something I'm not already aware of... at three or more hours it's a little long to sit through if it's all the same stuff.
I don't really think crypto has any great redeeming qualities, "blockchain" perhaps for other uses, but not whatever this incarnation of crypto has become.

I'll leave it at that, as I don't think there was anything controversial in that statement.

Modeling for a Targeted Shape of Genesis 9 - Marvelous Designer

I posted another screenshot tutorial in the Art Studio Forum.  Before the release of Genesis 9, I went through an example of creating a skirt for Genesis 1 because G9 was rumored to be like G1 in a unified shape.  Rumour turned out to be true.  In this screenshot turoial, I use Marvelous Designer to create a simple loose skirt with many folds designed for the Victoria 9 shape.  The resulting figure might be optimized for Victoria 9, but it can also be used with any G9 shape, such as a kilt for Michael 9, or a battle dress for a male demon.  The tutorial also includes creating shader domains and UV Mapping in Marvelous Designer.  I then export the OBJ to Studio where I rig from the V9 shape back to the base shape.  Demonstrate a couple DForce posing and morph shape examples.

Might be useful for Carrara users intending to make G9 items for use in Carrara as conformers or with VWD.

  • OpenGL (1.3 or 1.1)
https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/607051/opengl-1-3-or-1-1 Hi again, Leana !! I have returned to give you a bow and a tip of the cap. Deservedly so! And also Richard Haseltine, the forum's highly respected expert. Your question, Leana, included the word 'integrated'. Even though Daz had pointed directly at the system's graphic card, I had no doubt the installed Nvidia graphic card was as up-to-date as possible. What could have disrupted Daz 4.2.1? Enter Leana asking about an 'integrated' card! Every computer has a screen and the screen is powered by an integrated graphics card. I then uncovered a conflict, which Daz had done nothing to identify, was between Microsoft and Dell AMD's screen/graphics chipset. During Microsoft's frequent updates to Windows 11 had changed something to its Device drivers of the screen's Dell/AMD chipset. Daz came along, froze in place, and pointed to the graphics card. Because Leana hinted, I went to AMD's Driver and Support website and now I have the latest drivers re-installed and also its alert software to let me know if anything changes to the screen's drivers, specifically, the 'integrated' graphics card that powers the screen. It was Leana who rose above the general community and wondered, given Nvidia could not be at fault, guilt had to turn toward the screen's graphics card. She was spot on and her skill set was nothing less than ultimately astonishing. Richard, in her wake, put a shinier spotlight on the screen's graphic card. Thank you truly, Leana. Thank you for your time, Richard :-)

Has anyone tried the HD plugin on Genesis 9?

    https://sourceforge.net/projects/carrara-time-savers/

not many HD G9 characters to try and I own none wink

The base Genesis 9 relies on HD morphs for torso details like the bellybutton and nipples.  Here is the base Genesis 9 with default male textures in his best William Holden shirtless retro movie star mode.  See the settings for HD are even without additional characters.  Argh.  It has been the cause of considerable annoyance in the main Commons Forum.  The relatively even polygon density of Genesis 9 came at the cost of efficient edge loops - therefore, detail is provided in another way.  In the case of belly buttons and nipples, that way was HD parameters.

If anyone does experiment with the HD plugin, please let us all know, even if it is not for Genesis 9.

The one thing that I can't grasp yet, is how to light the Octane toon materials.

    vrba79,

I remember consulting this Octane tutorial to learn how to light a scene. That was a while back, when I used Daz-Octane for photorealism.

    DaremoK3,

There was a Daz-Octane tutorial by valzheimer at the forums years back. It's hard to find it now. Interestingly, tThere is an external forum at Otoy that's Daz specific. That'll likely be a good resource. Finally, apart from the work done by Phloki3D, I also refer people to this Instagram feed that showcases Octane NPR.

    Cheers!

I watched the Carrara 7 Pro course videos by Mark Bremmer.  Excellent!

And I have the Carrara 1 Bible.  Unfortunately, I do not have the disk that goes with the Carrara 1 Bible.

Mark Bremmer, PhilW, Mike Moir, Cripeman, GKDantas, Mike DeLaFlor, and so many other formal instruction providers.  And Dartanbeck!!!  Love them all.  But I agree that the best place to get answers is from forum users and from forum posts.

  • What was the last boxed Carrara version containing a printed manual ?

Here are some further tips on Learning Carrara:

    • Phil Wilkes Carrara Courses
    • Cripeman Cool Carrara Tricks Video Series
    • Carrara Cafe and their Carrara 3D Expo (C3DE) Magazine
    • The entire 3DXtract e-zine collection
    • GKDantas' Carrara Features Video Demonstrations
    • Carrara Plugins Index and FAQ (most are free now)
    • Dartanbeck.com

This forum is probably the best and fastest way to learn, however. Just ask. Someone usually answers pretty quick, and then other's will add to that. Nothing beats experience!

  • farewell carrara

You can see that Daz somehow has a development backlog. different software was bought but only used to a limited extent. The problem seems to be that the Mac is causing problems due to the omission of 32-bit support and the omission of Quicktime. there is probably too much to adjust.
But I'll continue to use it via Parallels and Mojave Carrara for as long as I can. In fact, I'm diving deeper and deeper into the software and only now am I learning what's possible. Of course there are things that are easier to do in other software with just one click, but I can't control anything. I just keep hoping that at some point it will continue.
That's why I've also firmly established myself here in the forum, even though I don't have English as my mother tongue. Only simple school English that was taught 40 years ago was also bad.
Just don't give up as long as we prove again and again that we still use Carrara and create images / animations that can still compete with others, there is hope.
Example Challenge which is supported by Daz.

Yup. You can use the method in the tutorial to create any neckline you want.  Just download the above starter mesh.  Delete the existing collar.  Delete further down the neckline to taste.  Then select the edges of the hole and extrude a collar inward to taste.

    This comment demonstrates with screenshots.

No one asked me - Diomede posts screenshots on whatever - Page 40 - Daz 3D Forums

That was the first thing I saw when I got back to the forums. You do such excellent tutorials! Brilliant, Diomede!

Thanks.  I am on the Genesis 9 train at the moment.  There are several forum regulars providing in depth instruction on how to create content for conforming and draping clothing.  Mada and Bohemian3 in particular, and there are others as well.  Thank you, Mada!  Thank you, Bohemian3!  They post videos, which is great.  I like written manuals or similar.  Therefore, I have been documenting for myself the steps I take to try to follow along.  The conformers should work in Carrara using the 'blended' rigging, and saving as character presets.  I think VWD should be able to substitute for DForce.  Unfortunately, my VWD has been broken since my hard drive failure.  I had backups of all the files but the drive references are screwed up somehow.  Bottom line, I will be posting another screenshot tutorial on using Marvelous Designer to make clothing for a specific Genesis 9 full body morph, and then conforming and draping in Studio.  The result should also work as a conformer and VWD item in Carrara.

Here is a basic loose skirt that I made specifically for the shape of Victoria 9.

Here is the same skirt with a pattern applied the G9 morphed to a mix of a demon, Michael 9, and Toon.  I am particularly happy with the UVs.  It needs some additional work, such as creating a DForce Add-On for thickness.

I guess I'm loosing my gang for monthly renders???  Is Independence Day/4th of July throwing you all off???  Remember I'm a little lax with the rules... so anything that is your interpretation from your part of the world is pretty much ok with me :)  I'm working on mine... Half a month to go.

Ps... Start thinking if you wanna give up my monthly challenge... I have a great idea for next year but I won't post it if no one seems interested any more.  You all think on it :)

    Happy Holidayzzzzzzzzzzzzzz... Hugzzzzzzzzzz

    Llola

Llola, honestly I see that Daz overall is less busy.

    • All forum activity seems to be down the last few months by 15-50%.
    • All gallery activity is down by about the same.
    • All contests seem to be down by some percent.
    • DeviantArt.com is way less active since AI exploded on the scene.
    • Instagram seems 10-25% of the people who created Daz imagery are also creating AI imagery now.

I'm afraid that AI is affecting everyone's outlook not just in Daz3D.  That's my fear.  When someone can create images in less than 10 seconds that is better than a weeks worth of editing can do... I don't see how it couldn't affect all art based software.

    Your thoughts?

ok.. since you asked for my thoughts... I have dabbled a little with AI... but... I do enjoy the process of 'creating'... putting together an avatar... clothes... adding a scene... etc.. etc.  The AI artworks that I have seen come no where near realistic.  They are rather funky looking.

I can't say what other peeps think... but... I... myself don't see giving up Daz anytime soon.  ;)  Plus.. I don't like the idea of having to pay for another subscription that the AI companies want... Plus... anyone can steal creations.  At least with Daz I can say... "I... made it myself!"

Not sure about your stats... I don't follow the numbers like most peeps.  I'm not a popular artist so I know my artwork isn't looked at by most peeps.  But I keep trying ;)

I appreciate your thoughts my friend and LOVE your love of the kitties!  By the way my boy, once named "Ollivander", now named "Buddy" is doing incredible and thriving.... We're all so happy as one small family now.

I freak out at times about AI thinking... what's the use.  I apologize if my negative feelings and depression of AI might have come on a little strong.  Honestly you are right that the journey is the gold.  If we get happiness/pleasure out of creating something then that's what's important.

On a side note... you are able to download a "local" running Stable Diffusion for free that will fit within the 8GB VRAM of your 3070 GPU.  You could then run an unlimited amount of images and play to your hearts content.  If interested where to download it for your Windows computer just message me through the messaging system.

Thanks for listening and for an excellent monthly contest.
