  • Keep Calm : There's always another Sale (Daily Sale Talk)

@Llynara and @Wonderland - exactly the same sentiment for me. I resisted FaceGen. Too steep of a price. I tried the demo out, it is cool. I wonder if it is really worth that much more than Headshop OneClick for what seems to be similar function.
But I'll have to wait until the novelty wears off and it comes down to around $19 or less, which I assume may happen some day... maybe when Genesis 4 comes out. :)
But every... other... thing... you said... *exactly*. They're are a couple Pro 7 packs I'd still like to add, if the price was super cheap.... and a few characters I don't have that are in my wishlist. Part of the problem is that when characters I didn't necessarily want, like Bethany, came out at rock bottom prices, I snapped them up with the idea that hair and clothes packages were auto-conforming... but in the process, it became very hard to justify the prices for Pro Packs I do want that rarely or never see steep discounts.
In the meantime, I'm getting to the point where the 256GB SD on my Surface Pro has over 200GB dedicated to DAZ. It is making me a much more discriminating buyer, all things considered.

@donovancolbert Can you render on a Surface Pro??? Can you get IRay on it?

  • Facegen now on sale...get it!

No pictures to demonstrate, but I seem to get better results positioning the eye markers below the pupil and above the outer rim of the iris than when I place the eye markers directly on the iris, at least when the picture shows someone with squinty/droopy eyes.

I often do the same.  Sometimes the iris is unusable and I have to swap out eye textures in order to match where it should go on the eye.  The point placement is asking more for where the pupil would be on an ideal image.  That said, sometimes it just works.  If a photo is not working, it is often better just to try a different one.

It's really too bad there is no way to make small refinements. I have had some great results, but also some ALMOST great results that were spoiled by small innaccuracies that could be easily fixed if only I could give the program more info. For instance, the app often misjudges where the lips part, so the resulting texture has a line through the bottom or lower lip. Same goes for nostrils and the often states eye issues. If I could simply give the app a little more info (and option for more reference points) this could be alleviated I feel.

Agreed, a separate, texture matching screen would be nice to refine where the texture should match up on the model.  This is one area that I did really like in Headshop.  You can use the Auto Point feature to pull the points as needed to match the skin and see the result before exporting.

In Facegen, for lips, you're better off being just slightly under the lip line in most cases.  However this varies according to how hi resolution your original photo is.  The higher the resolution, the more accurate the point placement can be.

thanks Astracadia didn't get them 100% accurate but still like the results need to play with morphs more I've used my half brother/sister (we had same father different mother) few times now in various renders using headshop as we as photo manipulatations but I like the results of facegen don't have to edit the textures afterwards getting black lines out of the maps and it creates body skin textures

done a few different versions of them using faceshop so here's my first go of recreating my brother and sister with facegen

    http://www.daz3d.com/gallery/#images/311666

    Howdey From Johnny And Melissa

They make great characters! Your sister kind of reminds me of Katee Sackhoff from Battlestar Galactica!

thank you yeah I think they do make good charcters done a few renders using headshop and photomanipulations of them now haven't quite got them 100% correct especially in the shaping but still happy with the results and that's the main thing to me using facegen for new textures just like we do with bought stuff we mix and match differnt textures on different shapes for endless characters of course sometimes you do want to actually recreate the actual person and this one is pretty close and again in headshop I have recreated a few friends and my mother in a few renders  but with facegen don't have to edit out black lines and other stuff like I did with the other plus you can create matching full body skin tone with facegen hs is still good but I like fg more. You know I didn't notice that she looked like Kattee here so had to look up some pics to compare and your right she does though in real life don't think she does like said didn't get her 100% accurate here or John either but I still like the results

  • FaceGen vs HeadShop OneClick

I've always considered (my opinion) HeadShop to be a poor product.

I was sceptical about FaceGen at first, but ended up buying the pro version.

  • FaceGen vs HeadShop OneClick

HeadShop suffers from some serious problem, i.e. in regards where your TEMP render files are located, which basically make the product impractical to use.

FaceGen doesn't have these problems (at least not the test vrsion), so I think that will be where I'm heading.

  • Facegen now on sale...get it!

I highly recommend downloading the newest version of the FaceGen Artist demo. :)

Thanks for the link Diva, made me decide to play around with it. From a couple hours of play, it seems that it really comes down to quality source material if recreating an actual person. I wonder how many more features the pro version has over the demo if any? I do love that it creates textures for the whole model that match the face, something headshop does not do.  I'll play with it some more to see if I want to invest in the pro version. here is one of my examples

  • Facegen now on sale...get it!

I picked up the demo a few weeks ago and have monkeyed with it a little but not much really. Since it's on sale now for way cheaper than I was looking at, I decided to dust off the demo and see if I could get anything decent with it.  I came up with this, not exacltly a point-and-click operation, I had to do some decent tweaking to get it right. For example, it had a bit of a pin-head and so I had to use a d-former to widen the top of the head so it was proportionate. But I got something decent, much better (for me) than HeadShop was here, which was so broken (for me) that I had to return it.  If this is still on sale tomorrow, I may break down and do it, time to sleep on it.

Now, off to find one of those Marilyn Monroe characters I have in my archive, finally have someone for her to hang out with!

    Excellent JFK.

    Is that JFK?

Yes it is.  The morph and texture were actually based on an artists rendering of what JFK would look like if he lived into his 60s. It had the benefit of being a straight ahead shot, perfect for FeceGen, the bad part was the texture was aged looking. I had to get rid of lots of textured in wrinkles and the like but it gave me a good base to work from.  Got lucky finding that artists concept though.

Very cool. :) I like the idea of using it to do political figures. Sounds like it could make for some fun political art.

  • FaceGen vs HeadShop OneClick

I own both FG and HS10.  FG all the way.  I have worked extensively with both programs.  I have not used 1Click.  But, considering how many crashes I've had using HS9 and 10, I wasn't all that excited to spend more money for another version of the same software.

FG doesn't crash.  HS10 crashes frequently

FG has tweak dials within the program to fix shapes before export.

FG exports a full body texture set along with the face shape.  HS10 does not.

I have had success in creating characters with both programs.  But, after spending all that money on Headshop and it's upgrades, I stilll opted to purchase Facegen Home version, then immediately upgraded to Pro.  It was well worth it just to alleviate all the headaches of using Headshop.  I wanted to love Headshop.  The idea of it is great.  I could just never get a good character without a lot of crashes, restarts, and really screwed up meshes.  With FG, I get a usable character with minimal trial and error.  And, a crash is a very rare thing that usually only happens if there is an issue with the reference photo.

don't have oneclick but have previous version I have gotten some pretty good results out of that but also had a fair few not so good now got facegen pro and some not good but others YES good and morphing is easy in fact even easier than morhing in morphs got in daz though in some cases still needed but it lines everything up for you and in the prog click control and with left mouse drag the part of the face you want to reshape so easy also it creates matching skin textures cool huh so in surfaces you select face and lips locate where you saved textures are which should be documents-daz3d-my daz library- runtime-textures-face gen - genesis2/3f/m-and your character's name

for the morph select shaping tab (one where paremetors and other menus are) select head and I find it easier to type in the search that charecter name to locate the morh dial

ok back on textures now the main face head will look like a mask and rest of body skin tone back of head may not match that's ok as I said you get skin textures for the rest body sooo in surfaces select legs and where you saved your facegen tex selects the legs texture, same for torso and arms texture and eyes pupi/lcornea/iresisis and you get a brand new character. this is g3 btw with g2 and maybe g1 the arms and legs are more broken up and have to select more sections in surfacs  menu some reason shoulders didn't convert texture wise probably missed selecting something

ok now the first 3 pics of this lady I did with headshop 9 with her with blonde and red  hair and the ones with dark hair I did of her in facegen including morph some not fully rendered trying different lights expressions sometime the eyes got a little wonkie cross eyed so had to pose each eye seperately also the blue eyes kinda watery  were from her photo textures was a little not sure on those and chose blue eyes from a bought skin

  • FaceGen vs HeadShop OneClick

I haven't got Headshop, mostly because it's made by the same people who made Dress Shop, one of the few products I've returned for a refund. I can't remember why as it was a while ago, but I know I wasn't impressed by it at all. I only got FaceGen yesterday, and already wouldn't want to be without it. Whatever you pick, I can't wait to see what you produce with it. I love seeing your character creations :)

Aww Thank you! :D That made my day!

I've heard good things about FaceGen, but at that price, I definitely want to shop around to see if the alternative is as good. The base price for HeadShop is $100 less than the base price of FaceGen, so if that's an option that is as good I'd for sure want to go with it. Hopefully someone with HeadShop can give some imput on if it's good or not. :)

Now what we have a couple products that create textures and morphs from photographs, the question is - which one is better? How does FaceGen compare to HeadShop OnClick? Which one creates better results?

I want to get one of these products (I can't afford both) - but would really appreciate some feedback from those that have tried one or both of these products. I hope you guys can help me.
