Has anyone tried DS4.23 general release on Win 10 yet? Are there any issues for US2?
Cheers,
Alex.
I opened it up on my desktop Win 10 with a GTX 1080 card. I saw a lot of white fields initially, it took a long time for the screen to fill up and I had to select a workspace, add the USC2 pane and found the scripts and favorites I may have had before were gone, so I added Code66's Alienator Pro II scripts and his Toobox scripts quickly and also serial numbers for new plug-ins. When I rebooted Daz Studio, I had to redo Daz Studio totally, only the plug-ins stuck. I made sure to save in Content DB Maintenance 'Export User Data' before opening USC2.
Again, a lot of white for a period of time, that resolved into what I expect. But after trying to create a test scene, it through an error, not specified. So I went back and closed the cameras on a number of items, tried again. I received a notice a render was in progress!? No sign of one on my screen. I changed to filament and the render ran. I think I will stay off of the D|S 4.23.0.1 for any work in Daz Studio. It is just weird after working with the Beta for years. (I will freely admit this 2017 computer is having serious issues and why I bought the Win 11 laptop. So my experience may not be a valid test.)

Questions about these new toon featuresDrogo Nazhur said:
I think that I kno the answer but in order to use this new toon stuff, do we need to purchase new characters, hair, accessories, shaders, environments, etc., to create this toon world or is it just a different render engine which will work with existing characters and accessories?
You don't have to buy newly-released toon characters, hairs, wearables, etc. ~ The Filatoon shaders are provided in DS 4.23 and G9 Starter Essentials, so you can apply the new shaders to the products you own (not all... some products will work badly with Filatoon), plus necessary tweaking, then render with Filament drawstyle.
Questions about these new toon featuresDifferent render engine. Well the same Filament renderer with some new settings and using new shaders that are in the Daz Studio Default Resources. So you can easily rework most existing content into Filatoon style. The new products just come set up that way out of the box.

Free Genesis 9 stuff including male and female anime characters, a spiffy new cartoon shader for Filament, and material presets to make those things work in concert!
Many thanks!

Very nice, @Wendy
Good to see, that there are some other possibilities with FilaToon renders.
I especially like how easy is to get multi-figure scenes without the excessive time of rendering.
I only used the Filatoon shader for the candle flames, otherwise it's regular iray Uber
the thing is, I never could do glow in Filament before but that shader unlocks that functionality
I hate Shadermixer but may need to delve into it again and explore this one if it's possible as it might unlock a few other functions missing in Filament which indeed I like using for speed
another non toon but also non PBR video

Spotlights still give me a headache. The one that highlights the gifts needed to be very close even with boosted Lumen numbers. I wonder where the filament draw node nibbles on the distance for certain lights.
But to my surprise, the point light above her worked quite nicely. It needed only a little bit of adjustment. I guess I get distant light now. I wonder if I could use multiple distant lights for a 3P set-up.
Love this! What coat is that?

That came out very cool! Nicely done!

It's exciting to see all the renders using FilaToon.
On the first page, DAZ_Rawb stated that they had Filament running on an early build of DAZ Studio for Mac (with native Apple Silicon support coming later).
That was in July 2021.
I suppose all the great sales and excitement re: FIlaToon will be long gone by the time Mac users have the opportunity to use the elusive DS 5 (with Filament and other improvements.)
It's mid-October 2024 now.
That's a long, long, long wait for us to get a native modern Mac version of DS. I am glad that the devs (with Apple's help?) got a crippled version running on modern versions of macOS/Apple Silicon. It seemed like that was a quick interim fix until the real deal was released and kept our hopes up.
Time has faded those hopes. I quit purchasing products off and on over the past few years while waiting for DS 5. When SimonWM came out with a new product recently, I did buy a few products including his. Thank you, SimonWM for giving me a reason to invest in DS again.
I'd like to know if we're truly going to see the Mac version of DS updated properly in a time frame that is reasonable for customers. This delay has gone on too long (for me).
Yep, I'm being all pouty about the situation, but Apple has released 3 generations of Apple Silicon processors with the 4th gen coming quite soon. None of them can run DS natively or without issues. The 3 year stop gap version has had its run. Let's get that proper version. Or some confidence inspiring news about it.
Had to get that off my chest and sorry for the tone of the rant. But not the content of it. :)

Filament for Mac will not be added before DS 5 as it will entail breaking plug-in compatibility.
Been painfully aware of that for a while now. As we all have.

Ok.. I'll join in the fun... been playing with Filament... Does anyone know HOW to do DOF? I can't seem to do it with the camera... I wanted the background blurry to bring out the character more. This is Aiko 5 with a bunch of morphs and expressions.
you could try basic depth map maker using iray canvas - theres a run through video on the product page.
Thanks Moog... I must say thought that I've not worked with depth maps much... They totally confuse me. I'll have to give them another look :)
FilaToon / Cell shaded rendering with FilamentExperimenting with faking effects and using iray canvases for FilaToon renders.
So there are four lights in this scene. One distant light set to a dark purple with shadows, and three orange-ish spotlights outside each window with a wide spread and no shadows to add some glow.
The light shafts are props from the Filament Atmospheres product scaled down and positioned at each window, mimicking a technique i've seen in older videogames to create fake light shafts. I also adjusted the glass of the windows to be emissives so they're affected by bloom.
Finally, I used an iRay canvas to render out a depth map, making sure the fake light shafts were set to NOT be visible in render (this doesn't affect Filament renders at all, so you can set it and forget it), and used that in Krita to add a depth-of-field blur and to make the background a bit darker.
I really wanted to add a Ambient Occlusion canvas too, but for the life of me I couldn't get any decent results from that.
But yeah, aside from that one hiccup, i'm really glad with how this came out!

Anime Toons and Filatoon Shader Q&AUsing a non-Filament Drawstyle or selcting Iray or 3delight as the render engine will give a non-Filament render, though you may well need to apply another shader (by selecting the object and whichever surfaces you want to take the shader then double-clicking a preset to apply it) to get useful results.
Anime Toons and Filatoon Shader Q&AI gave that a try and it seemed to help a little. Rendering at a much larger size made the most difference. Thanks for the tip. I finally got a decent render with this list of tips:
