  • Red Dead Redemption 2 (and similar)

The details they added are spectacular. The atmospheric effects, lightning, all of it looks amazing. They have a subsurface scattering effect when ears and nostrils are backlit by a bright sun. In real time. It's amazing what they pulled off with this visually.

how hard is it on resources? Thinking about getting it, but my system is a mid level i7 and newer games tend to struggle

There is no PC version of the game yet, nor has one been announced. For performance, just look at my post, which covers the Xbox One X version of the game. I'd would be surprised if no PC version ever comes, but the original RDR NEVER came to PC at all, in spite of fans begging for it. However I would be surprised if Rockstar did the same this time.

In short, it runs at a rock solid 30 fps on One X at full 4K. There are few true full 4K games out there, so it is clear this game is extremely well optimized to run so well at 4K on console, granted this is the most powerful console available. The PS4 Pro runs the game at a much lower resolution, and the base PS4 and Xbox One both have issues keeping at 30 fps at even lower resolutions. The older Xbox One is the worst performing of the bunch. My guess is a 1080ti will be able to run the PC version at 60 once the PC version releases.

This is a beautiful game. I have been playing for 36 hours (out of the 43 hours it has been out) and it is the facinating and beautiful. You can see for miles. There are mirrors, but they are inside rooms.

Does hiding the body underneath the clothes speed up the render? I have Decimator, but not sure how to get the best out of this utiluty.

They do more than hide the body under the clothes. There is NO body, no texture, no geometry, no anything, under the clothes. The clothes and body are all one model. You save on texture and geometry doing this and it is a basic element of how games are constructed. If a character changes clothes, they often have a whole new character model for the new clothes. In some games, if they give you options to change clothes, you may notice your whole character disappears and reloads with the new clothes. This is why.

It is possible to port a Daz model into a game engine, and there are a few (very few) games that use Daz models. The one that comes to mind is the horrible "House Party", which is sort of a dating game. I follow gaming a fair bit, and this game has been featured on a few youtube channels...not in a good way, they were making fun of the game. But when I saw it, I instantly recognized the cast as being Daz models. Victoria 7 is right on the 'cover', LOL. You can probably pick out and name every character in the cast if you wanted to. Anyway, if this game makes any changes to the models for performance, I do not know, but the game is nowhere near as demanding as RDR2 is. You are inside a house the whole game. So in this case they probably could get away with less optimizing. Feel free to look up videos of this, but be warned they may be NSFW for a variety of reasons, often language.

  • GenX2 - Resetting Source Figures

Thanks - I still can't get it to work when loading Victoria 4.2 in GenX2, but if I load Victoria 4.2 into a scene I get the pop-up dialogue box.

  • Would this be possible or even viable for Daz as a step closer to realism?

It is eight years ago (so my memories of it may not be completely accurate), but I seem to remember Daz announcing that they had bought a body scanner to do just what you suggest.  Shortly after they releases the Reby Sky figure for Victoria 4.  I remember a lot of hype about the launch and I bought the figure at the time, but unfortunately it wasn't the huge step forward that you might have expected.  I don't remember hearing anything else from Daz about scanned figures after that, so maybe it was way too expensive for the returns that it gave.

    Here is the figure: https://www.daz3d.com/v4-elite-reby-sky

Of course things have improved since the V4 days, but even at the time there were more realistic figures being created.  I would imagine though that the outlay:profit ratio would not be enough to justify it even now.

  • GenX2 - Resetting Source Figures

On a Windows PC, open the GenX.ini file in a text editor located in C:\Users\<YOUR USER NAME>\AppData\Roaming\DAZ 3D\Studio4\GenX2

Scroll down and you'll see a [path] section that probably has multiple entries for Victoria 4.2.

  • GenX2 - Resetting Source Figures

I'm having an issue where the Source figure drop-down list in GenX2 shows multiple Victoria 4.2 figures. Also, I don't get the pop-up dialogue box anymore that allowed me to pick the Morphs++, Elite Morphs, etc.

Does anyone know how to reset the figures back? Or know where they're saved in the DAZ 3D Library? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling and those figures still show up.

    Thanks!

  • Strides in Photo-Realism?

Really?  I thought the hair used in my latest renders would at least be a significant improvement over what came before, but apparently not.  ......  Let me ask you this: what in particular seems so lacking in the hair?

    Everything is lacking with hair.....Everything
the trans map used appears very PAINTED with white streaks that appear very flat and artifical.

Can anyone tell me what IRay can do that SuperFly perhaps can't?

Indeed that is the great mystery ,for me at least.
    Posers "Superfly" is allegedly
the Blender Cycles render engine ported to poser.
the "real" blender Cycles is every bit as realistc as IRay and actually has more options for scene optimization  in Branched path tracing mode and has as excellent NPR for ton shading as well

Here is the default ,unmorphed Genesis 2 female with the "Leyton" hair by AprilSH.

The skin is an old  Victoria 4 set called "Hhorizon" by Syyd Raven of the former RNDA.

Sent to blender 2.79 with the free Teleblender script from"MCasual"
Not attempting "photorealism" as I did not let it finish enough samples to even clean up the fireflies.
Still Compare the hair, in this unfinished render, to the
finshed hair render in your Poser version of "Cycles"

Surely you can see your problem..yes??

  • Handgun variety!

I've noticed a very strange trend with G8 products, as I've been regularly browsing the new releases for a long time now.

    https://www.daz3d.com/mmx92-9mm-pistol

    https://www.daz3d.com/manhattan-detective-for-genesis-8-females

    https://www.daz3d.com/z-deadly-weapon-gun-and-poses-for-genesis-8-female-and-victoria-8

Beretta M9. It's a very common pistol in American media, as it is used by military and is readily available all over the country. It has a very nice form and look to it, and thus gets used in games and movies alot. Here in Daz, specifically for the G8 releases, this 1 specific gun has been remade 3 times. Even more if you go back and look through G3.

    https://www.daz3d.com/mmx-45acp-pistol-with-accessories

    https://www.daz3d.com/z-hot-and-loaded--gun-and-poses-for-genesis-3-and-8

    https://www.daz3d.com/z-hotshot-gun-and-poses-for-genesis-8-male-michael-8

    https://www.daz3d.com/da-hand-gun-and-poses-for-genesis-8-female-s

Next, the Colt 1911. Basically the same story as the M9, just at an early point in history. This one has been remade 4 times for G8. And again, even more if you go back to G3.

Now, as someone who has attempted to learn modeling and such, I can obviously respect the effort and detail put into these products, but, I just wish that the next time someone came out with a "Gun and poses" set, that they could make a different gun. There's literally hundreds if you just walk into any American gun shop, or look up any FPS game. There is zero shortage of cool and eye-grabbing designs. I'm not going to sit here and make a christmas list, but, I'd like to start seeing some revolvers (Both hunting and old west styles), some compact pocket pistols, or even just more unique looking ones.

  • Carrara Parameters

I focus on the first question and leave rest to others.

Morphs are usually found in one of three places.

    - For genesis, most morphs are found by selecting the "actor" level of the figure.

    - Some morphs are also found by selecting the group level (genesis in this case).  For genesis, most of these are automatc correction morphs, such as joint controls.

    - A third place is found by selecting individual bones with the figure skeleton, such as the head.

When you create your own morphs for Genesis in Daz Studio, you can use morphloader pro to pick where the morph wil be found on the figure.

Generally, for genesis and later (V5, V6,...), look for the morphs by selecting the "actor."  In contrast, for Victoria 4 and earlier, look or morphs by selecting the figure nameor the body parts.  Having said that, remember there are exceptions for genesis, espcially if you created the morphs yourself.

Thanks for taking time to answer! What about parameters for simple moving limbs and body parts? Like if I want to animate my character performing specific moves, where do I find the tools for that? In Daz3d I use the Power Pose and parameters tab. Parameters in Carrara I found to be missing for most body parts (at least for M5) as they only show unclickable "root" with no other settings. Thanks again!

  • Michael 2 question

This thread might help you https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/49024/fitting-michael-victoria-2-to-genesis-genesis-2

It looks like you'll have to convert the outfit to Michael 3 and from there you can convert it to modern figures. I don't know if it requires you to own Michael 2, though.

Or you could just use the transfer utility to fit it directly to whatever figure you want. It's a little more work, but it's possible.

  • 'Add node' DForm to AutoFitted Clothes not working

You could try right-clicking on the figure and selecting Transfer Active Morphs, if those are morphs (which the product says they are). If you want to use a dForm to match the moprhs, or tidy up the auto matching, then it would surely be better to apply it to the clothing in the first place.

Ok what I did was click on G3F then go to Assets -> Transfer Active Morphs but it said 'you must select a Figure with parametric joint parameters..........' so nothing happens. Right clicking on G3F doesn't show any Transfer Active Morphs option.

Right, sorry - I was thinking of Victoria 4 still. As Leana says, check the AutoFollow setting.

Auto follow is automatically turned on, so it isn't the cause of the problem. Then, I applied a D-Former to the clothing but when I clicked the field, no dots show up on the clothes even though I moved the field all around. This is a really weird problem. EDIT: I mentioned in my previous reply that when I opened a new scene and loaded a new G3F then loaded a V4 clothing, adding a DForm node to the clothing worked perfectly. HOWEVER when in this particular problematic scene, when I did the same thing with a newly-loaded G3F model, it doesn't work. Could there be something in the scene itself, like maybe conflicting IDs or something that is causing this malfunction?

  • Wishlist chaos and disappearing products

If I'm reading correctly, items are being culled not for being too old to still be useful, but due to lack of sales volume.  If that is the case, why are Vicky 1 & 2 items such as "Victoria Mermaids" (https://www.daz3d.com/victoria-mermaids) not being culled?  I can't imagine that the last item on the last page of the Sort By MOST POPULAR filter has high sales volume.

Most likely their store as a whole made enough money not to be culled.

  • Wedding rings for Victoria 4?

I've searched all over (Daz, Rendo, ShareCG, Google, etc.) to find a decent wedding/engagement/diamond ring for Victoria 4 in DS, to no avail. The "Wedding Ring Set by Razor42" would be fine, but Rendo lists it as "Unavailable." I found another that worked only in Poser, not Daz. I can find wedding dresses, arches, etc., but no rings that are suitable.

Anyone know of a source? (I hope this is the right forum. Apologies if not.)

  • Victoria 7 normal torso map looks wrong

Yeah, I noticed too that using the HD morph plus the normal map gave even more pronounced results in that area. I thought HD morphs only worked on a microsurface level; such as micro pores and wrinkles.

Anyway, even using default Victoria 7 the results are not ideal on my view. It's ok, guess I will just check other figures using the same UVs I might have in my library to use their normal maps. I think the results will be better even if they are not created for that geometry.

Thank you both for your help.

Make sure Victoria's UV set is actually set to Victoria 7. Her maps will not line up with base G3 UV's.

  • DS not finding Poser (V4) files in Runtime/Textures

    Hi,

I recently added Victoria 4.2 and downloaded and installed lots of 3rd-party clothes, etc. The textures for these outfits typically get installed into [My Library]/Runtime/Textures. Even though I have added [My Library] through the Content Manager (the path is actually C:/Merged/My DAZ Library) to both my DAZ Studio Formats and Poser Format library locations, those textures are not showing up anywhere in my Content Library. I can't find them manually, and Search (either File or Database) can't, either. Sometimes, when I try to add an item, I get a File Not Found, Locate/Skip? dialog box. When I do, I can navigate to the [Library]/Runtime/Textures... location and apply it manually.

I tried using Content Manager to add the Runtime/Textures directory separately to Poser Formats, but it refused, saying that location was already mapped.
So what's up? Why is DS unable to find stuff in the Runtime/Textures directory? I've Googled this for two days with no relevant results, so I call upon the collected wisdom of the DS community for assistance.

    Thanks.
