Sure! Here’s a quirky, attention-grabbing forum post that’s random but fun—perfect for stirring conversation in an off-topic section:

Title: I Just Learned Octopuses Have Three Hearts… and Now I'm Re-Evaluating Everything

Okay so, this started as an innocent dive into ocean trivia during my coffee break, and now I’m spiraling.

Octopuses (yes, that’s the correct plural) have three hearts. TWO pump blood to the gills, and ONE pumps it to the rest of the body. But here's the kicker: the heart that sends blood to the body actually stops beating when they swim.

Imagine if your heart took a break every time you went for a jog. No thanks.

Also, their blood is blue because it’s copper-based. So we’ve got an eight-armed alien with three hearts, blue blood, the ability to camouflage like a chameleon, squeeze through a hole the size of a coin, and potentially open jars better than I can.

Why are we not talking about this more? Why are we not worshipping them as sea wizards?

Anyway, what’s the most random animal fact that made you stop and question the universe for a sec?

Let me know if you want it to be themed (conspiracy-style, sci-fi, philosophical, absurd, etc.) or fit a certain kind of forum!

    thanks ChatGPT cheeky

Octopuses are quite intelligent too.  Also, octopus females, get pregnant then hide in a cave with their gazillion eggs, starve themselves protecting the eggs, and die about the time the eggs hatch, after only a couple of years of life total.   They got short changed by evolution.indecision

Daz Central and DIM are essentially the same under the hood, and if installed after DIM Daz Central will adopt its settings and vice versa so I am not sure why one would work when the other didn't, other than possible security software issues.

Daz Central was a simplified version af DIM, and is no longer supported. If you tried to install it, it is possible that it has changed something in the settings.

If you open DIM, click the gear icon, go to advanced settings, and Installation tab. Does the settings there correspond to where it previously was installed?

You can attach an image of it if in doubt.

Here is what it shows (see attached)

For me, it's sleep apnea. I have a bi-pap machine, but it seems to have gotten weaker over time. I keep waking up, and I know I'm not getting deep, sound sleep. I hope the doctor can get things back on track at my appointment next week. It may be time for a new sleep study.

I also use a bi-pap machine. I have complex sleep apnea and very severe central sleep apnea. Cleveland Clinic Dr said it's the worst case that she has seen in her career. Because of it being so severe, if I fall asleep on accident without it or forget to turn it on, I have a very high likelihood of being catatonic most or all day due to hypoxia. It's a long-standing statement that all the mods and wife tell me to "put your mask on" before logging off for the night. It's gotten so bad that we had to install security cameras in all the rooms of the house so I can be monitored and if something occurs the wife intercoms through the cameras to wake me or to say something else. My worry is forgetting to wear or turn on at night and not waking.

That sounds horrible, I'm very sorry that you have to try and sleep under such conditions. It's amazing really that you manage to get up and do things (and even patrol us naughty forummers) at all! You must be permanently exhausted.

  • Swarm Scripts: Now includes spheroidal swarm.

I came up with the thread name just as I was writing the thread title, and it's probably less appropriate for a rectangular bounded volume than an ellipsoid, as Eustace Scrubb suggested.

I'm planning to do simple little scripts, so I will leave the rectangular one as it is with it's primary suitability for blown leaves and things like that. I have managed to do a fairly rough & ready overlap prevention that tries 100 times to get a non overlapping location before it abandons the instance and moves on to the next.

Then, I think I could possibly make another fairly simple script to generate instances inside an ellipsoid bounding volume around a central point, along with a bias of the instance's towards the middle. This would be more suitable for swarms. Good thought Eustace Scrubb.

I've discovered that the script will instance complete characters including any clothing etc. so long as the root node is chosen - in the same way as my linear array script.

I can't update the thread with a progress image just now as the day's progress is largely limited to bug fixing and preventing overlaps. I can see that a help file is going to be very necessary to give ideas on how to use it.

  • Need Help with the Viewport

Let me see if I understand what is suggested concerning undocking all panes and then docking each to the Viewport window. Before I do. I wish to esxplain how I had it set up before my problem arose.

My Viewport window is the main window were all content that is loaded can be viewed. (I'm sure you know this, but I include this info just in case someone doesn't understand.) On the Left side of the Viewport Window I have four tabs docked: Smart Content, Surfaces, Shaping, Posing. On the right side of the Viewport Window I have four other tabs docked; Scene, Content Library, Parameters, Tool Settings. Each of these side tabs open different windows for performing specific types of tasks. The top of the interface has the 8 main menu headings; File, Edit, Create, Tools, Render, Connect, Window, Help. Right beneath that, but still across the top, are the main tabs; Actors Wardrobe and Props, Pose and Animate, Lights and Cameras, Render; in the left part of that particular bar. In the right side of that same bar is The DAZ 3D Logo, Home, My Account ,My Gallery. In the next bar just under the one I just described is the Special Tool Icons that can be clicked for particular tasks. So there are three bars across the top of the interface. In addition is a single bar across the bottom of the interface, with just the Select a Lesson Dropdown menu bar, and a tiny window with squares next to it numbered from 1 to 9. I'm sure most here know about how all of this works. I have enough room on the vertical Tab Bars to add up to 2 more tabs each, should I have the need for them. This is the way my DAZ Studio has been arranged for about 15 years.

So, from what I have read here, I need to make sure my Viewport  becomes the central area of my interface, and the way to do it so that the viewport window auto scales as I open a tab from either side, is to have all the other windows undocked, and then dock each one to the side of the Viewport window I want them docked to. Like for instance, I should first dock the Smart Content tab to the left side of the Viewport Window, and then do the same for each of the tabs I want on that side, which are Surfaces, Shaping, and Posing. Next Do the same again for the right side of the Viewport Window, docking each of the following one by one; Scene, Content Library, Parameters, and Tool Settings.

So my next question is now this: Do I have to dock the bars across the top and bottom in the same manner? Or do those bars remain in place? I do know that the best place for the Animation related tabs is the bottom of the Viewport Window; but as I don't normally do animations, I don't really need that in a permanently docked position. So If I want to use those features, I only have them docked for the duration of the work I am doing along those lines. The same is true for the other side tabs I rarely use. That however is going to change soon, as I have some of my own models that I wish to rig for use in DAZ Studio, and I want them to have moving parts! To be successful at that, I am in need of a more complete explanation of rigging a product, and getting DAZ Studio to permanently Memorize the rig, so that they can be offered up for sale.

One of those products at least will be something many folks wouild love to have! All I'm going to say about it is that it will be an attachment made to be attached to human, and other figures, and I plan to adapt it to fit multiple figures. All the work from Modeling, UV Malpping, Making Textures, Rigging, and making Pose Presets will be done by me. I know exactly how I want it all to work. I already have the model made, and the UV mapping done. I just have to get the rest of the work completed, and then begin adapting the model to the different figures. I will even adapt it to certain animals, plus fantasy creatures of nonhumanoid form. You want to know what it is? That shall be a secret until I can get it released for at least four different figures, two male figures, and two female figures!

Google had general issues, with widespread effects, I believe.

  • How to achieve the Desaturated Rembrandt Style?

So let me try to get you farther. I paint.

You've now got a picture that's mainly brown. So far so good.

Now there are some other characteristics common to the example renderings and Rembrandt.

Take the biggest thing next: lighting and composition.

The renderings you linked all have simple dark backgrounds, and the face is lit. The viewer's eye is necessarily drawn to the point of interest (the face).

    Some Rembrandt paintings:
    https://totallyhistory.com/rembrandt-paintings/

Many pictures are more complicated, but Rembrandt's self-portrait does exactly the same thing: there's one point in the picture to which your eye is drawn (the lit right side of his face). You can also see enough of his hat, hair, etc., against the slightly lighter part of the dark background in back that you immediately understand the image.

There's a focal point. There's a path the viewer's eye is supposed to take, something she's supposed to notice first. But then there needs to be enough of the rest of the shape for that focal point to make sense, for the viewer to understand the objects in the picture. If Rembrandt's face was lit the same way, but everything else was black, the picture might not work as well, because the face against so much darkness would look disembodied, and its relation to its surroundings might be initially puzzling.

These other paintings by Rembrandt also have a brighter focal point, where the light falls, and where the viewer almost always looks first. Then, having taken in the lit part, she looks around to understand the rest of the painting. A painting is understandable and successful in design if the viewer apprehends the main element first and then understands more as she looks to the other elements. Lighting the main element most brightly is one way to draw attention to it.

In your "Man with a Pistol" picture, the brightest thing in the room, and the first place my eye is drawn, is the lamp in the background. Next I move to his lit shoulder, and finally up to his face. And eventually I get it. But I suggest that that's not the right order, since the lamp is incidental scenery, not part of the meaning of the picture. I think you want the viewer to see the man's face and, almost immediately thereafter, to identify the pistol.

So I would suggest some experiments with the lighting. I believe that the backrgound can be de-emphasized with less light, and the light bulb in that lamp is probably best behind something, lest it distract, though it can continue to illuminate the background. And I think you want a foreground light, or rather lights, that will shine on the man's face and the pistol.

You will certainly have to experiment, but I suspect if I were lighting this I'd probably think I needed more than one light: maybe one diffuse and yellower, but one a bit whiter in color and shining on his face itself. (Three or four lights of varying intensities, softness, angles, and color temperature is not too many.)

I see, as I look at Rembrandt's paintings, that often the central light on the main subject (usually a face) is usually soft and at least somewhat diffused, but often white in color (and I suspect some of the ones that look yellow were white originally, but they are unrestored). This ought to be achievable in Photoshop, but if I had to do it, I'd probably try it in Daz Studio with a collection of promising-looking shaders to darken the background of whatever room I put my subject in.

That's what I have to do now, but the problem with using attachments to upload images is that every time you want to post the image, you either have to find the original post you uploaded to - a considerable pain with how bad the search is here - or reupload it every time.

The Daz Gallery should, in theory, have been one central hub where I could host images to post to the community.

  • A Silver Salver

Last summer my wife & I went on holiday to Suffolk, and while there we visited the great house of Ickworth (https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/suffolk/ickworth-estate, map https://www.google.com/maps/place/National+Trust+-+Ickworth/@52.2204554,0.654351,672m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m6!3m5!1s0x47d84e67cf7cf937:0xd72df50c1fa7f540!8m2!3d52.2204521!4d0.6569313!16zL20vMDVsMTlo?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDUyNi4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D) once owned by the Hervey Family (various Earls of Bristol). The house itself is now a hotel, but the central rotunda and the west wing (which was originally empty but built for symmetry) are open to visitors.

In the late 1700's and early 1800's the house was one of the social centres of the country, and the hugely wealthy family amassed a vast amount of family silver - approaching 500kg/1100lb. Most of the silver was in exquisitely decorated form. As the family fortunes fell, the silver was dispersed and eventually the family gifted half the building to the National Trust. The National Trust has tried to return a small part of the silver collection back to the house, and what is there is stored in the rotunda.

I was amazed and inspired by the silver that is left, the workmanship is stunning and the beauty of the pieces is incredible. I decided to model a piece inspired by what I saw. The original is a silver salver with the Hervey family crest, however, for obvious reasons I couldn't reproduce that. Instead, I put a Stag motif on the salver - something that is fairly common in the rest of the collection that remains.

So, please find attached a little model of a silver salver. The top has a stag motif, and the base has a simulated sterling silver hallmark both applied as normal maps. Uses that DAZ Uber shader and the 'Polished Iron' settings. It's about 10" long and 1" high. Doesn't do anything apart from look nice, and would go quite well with LaurieS' Victorian Decor for keys, loose cash or little folded notes.

    I hope you like it.

    Regards,

    Richard
