There's Always Another Sale Thread -- Discussions Only Pt 3

And a new day dawns in Daz-Land... These people certainly know how to over-complicate shopping! No idea what to do or say.

It seems to be how they celebrate their anniversary. Some people go out to dinner, buy a new outfit, and others get a new makeover . . . like a website makeover.
Edit: Just thought of something . . . will edit this in a minute rather than post twice If one reads between the lines, it seems Starter Essentials (only G10?) will be part of the subscription plan that leads me to believe DAZ 5 is ready, subscription only and G10 is about to debut along with DAZ 5. Every major DAZ Studio PRO version debuts a new character. 4.15 gave us 8.1. while 4.21 gave us G9 and although 4.22 gave us volumetrics it was not a major release. More like a test release, like they did for 8.1 prior to G9. But, 4.22 gave us Omni hair, and recently Omni nails too. Will G10 be an Omni10? Omni means of all things. Is DAZ going Omniverse? Do base members not get access to new content? Does anyone else wonder how this affect the Christmas PA giveaways. Last year the majority of PA Christmas content was targeted toward G9. Currently we can modify things in DAZ,we can create shapes from older models for G9. This reminds me of when Victoria 9 and the DAZ horse 3 were prematurely offered and we all know how that went. So I think I am going to lurk around some forums, stalk the DAZ release announcements, and click nothing to ensure my membership stays as is and I don't accidently mess it up. I have also backed up all plugins etc.

My offer is to exchage 18 months for 4 months. So I'm not sure how that's fair in the context of someone else getting 3 months for 9 months. Which in itself seems pretty unfair.
Edit: Then again, someone with more than me gets less upgrade! IMO this is completely ridicolous. If the target market are the power users, they are likely to be on here and reading what they all got, and comparing notes. Feels like a PR disaster...
I'd like to see some transparency on how this is calculated. I don't want to upgrade as I don't know what I"m going to get (see other posts) and I don't think the deal I'm being offered is fair.
I have 19 months of DAZ+ outstanding, and was offered 6 months of Premier. Assuming that upgrading to Premier means losing those 19 months, then DAZ are proposing to exchange 19 months of DAZ+ (a $190 value) for 6 months of DAZ Premier (a $114 value). So almost exactly 40% of my subscription value goes away with the move.
That's a very special special offer indeed.
In fairness, I probably didn't pay $190 for those 19 months. In fact, with discounts and special offers, I may have paid rather less than $114. Still, if DAZ were to say "Here, you can have $100 of store credit for $75," and then came along later and said "We'll give you $75 of New SuperDAZ Store Credit™ for that $100 of store credit you have already," people would be annoyed. They might not have lost any actual money, but DAZ would be retrospectively cancelling an offered discount, which is not a great look (and just possibly, you know, illegal).
I expect DAZ to issue some clarifications and maybe even make some adjustments in the near future, so I'm leaving my pitchfork and torch in storage for the moment. Still, it feels as if they haven't entirely thought this through yet, or haven't done a good job of communicating things.
One thing I'd like them to explain is what happens with existing DAZ+ coupons. If I've used them already, does that mean I don't get the Premier coupons this month? If I haven't used them already, do they go away when I upgrade? That's a basic question they should answer.
With respect to Premier itself, I'm on the fence. I am committed enough to DAZ-based 3D as a hobby (by which I mean I already spend a ridiculous sum each year) that the higher price is not an absolute deal-breaker. Still, the subscription model for software means that -- if I make the additional features of DAZ Studio Premier part of my workflow -- then I'm locked in to paying $20/month forever, or at least for as long as I still want to take part in this costly and time-consuming hobby. I've made similar devil's bargains with other software -- for photography, I basically live in Lightroom, so I'm going to be paying Adobe $11/month for the rest of my natural life. But it's something to consider.
In addition to getting locked in to the software, the new model seems to provide for lock-in to specific pieces of content. Quit paying your Premier subscription and any Premier-exclusive content you had access to goes away. DAZ's intention is clearly to make it hard for you to stop paying that $19/month. I don't think that's necessarily unscrupulous of them, but it's something to weigh up when you make your decision.
I'm also wary of the "pig in a poke" nature of the special bundles they say they're offering. Apparently the "exclusive bundles feature a mix of fan-favorite selections from previous releases along with brand-new characters drop from the month" which -- aside from the questionable grammaticality -- raises some unanswered questions. Technically, "fan-favorite selections from previous releases" might include Genesis 2 or even Victoria 3 content. Lots of that stuff was a 'fan favorite' back in the day. And if -- purely hypothetically -- you happened to own an absolutely absurd quantity of DAZ's published content (definitely not talking about me, no sir), then the chances are good that you might either already own the offered "fan favorites", or have already decided that you don't want it. So these exclusive bundles aren't necessarily super-compelling.
The least challenging parts are the increased discounts and tokens. You get about $4 more per month to spend on DAZ Originals, and $4 more per month "on Daz content" if you spend more than $25/month (I assume this is equivalent to the coupon in DAZ+ that gives you $6 off $18, and that the same "only valid on non-new, non DAZ+ content" restrictions will apply. If you're the kind of person who spends at least $10 on non-DAZ+ DAZ Originals and at least $25 on older non-DAZ Original content every month, then you're getting $8 extra bucks of value for your $10 over the DAZ+ subscription. Or, put another way, you're getting $20 of coupons for $19 of subscription plus a $25 minimum monthly spend on older content. Plus the tweaks to tokens. If this fits your spending patterns, then the upgrade is a no-brainer.
I'm not seeing anything (except that 30% gift card offer) in the DAZ+ sale today that I have to have, so I don't think I'm going to rush to upgrade. I'll let DAZ and the early adopters give us some more clarity on what's in the box before I make a move. And maybe I won't upgrade at all. I've been thinking for a while that it might be time to start spending less on DAZ, and subscribing to Premier would definitely be a move in the wrong direction.
Premier QuestionsHaving sort out the paying and how the upgrade works with the orange banner, I'm now left wondering what I get for the money. I don't expect answers to these, it's just to illustrate my issue with the information on offer...
- What is the free "legacy content"? Victoria 4? Older Genesis 9? The most basic or the most comprehensive?
- Do I keep the assets as I do with the Daz+ ones, and lose only the add-on sofware features, should I decide to stop paying?
- How do the export options differ from the bridges? Or the scupting from Mesh Grabber?
A one minute video and a sentence per feature isn't really enough when you're spending this much.
I am having issues with expressionsI am using a GF8.1 model and can't seem to get the expression products to work.
I have Expressions for Genesis 81 Female and Victoria 81 which does work.
I also have 101 Expression Library with Dial for the Genesis 8 Female which does not work on my GF8.1 model:
Why wouldn't that work on my GF8.1 model?
Products Folder IN Content libraryTo follow up on this, all I had to do was change the names of the files in the runtime/support folder to include the "for Victoria 8", then refresh the display in the Content Library and Smart Content and my thumbnails are there!
Oh, yes, and the red dot is gone, now that I have a valid thumbnail recognized.
Products Folder IN Content library@Melamkish thank you so much for taking the time to provide such an extensive analysis of this question. Now that you have pointed out that the red dot seems to only be on products that have no thumbnail (icon), I can see that that appears to be true. Thanks to your help, I have figured out why I can't even get one particular product to show its thumbnail, even when the JPG is in the runtime/support folder with the name that matches the dsx and dsa files in the same folder. The reason is that Daz was inconsistent in the product name!
In DIM. the product name is shown as "P3D Duffy HD for Victoria 8"

When I install it with DIM, the Daz Studio Content Library (And Smart Content) show the installed product name as "P3D Duffy HD for Victoria 8"

However, the support files installed by DIM call the product just "P3D Duffy HD". There is no "for Victoria 8".

Using the DIM option to show package files, confirms that DIM is installing those support files without the "for Victoria 8" in the name.

However, strangely enough, the actual dsx file in the Content folder in the DIM Zip file (the file that gets installed in runtime/support), shows that the support files should be named WITH the "for Victoria 8". So the dsx file in the Content folder does not match the actual list of files that are installed.

I don't know how Daz messed this up, but I think that I will be able to fix it now that I understand this product name mismatch. This had been really frustrating.
Bundle completion DiscountHello,
The last time was in May. The previous one in August last year I think. So they still did it recently, may do it in the futur, but it's rare and I found the one in May less interesting compared to the one in August last year (I got the two Victoria 8.1 bundles for a ridiculous low price: I still don't get how the maths was supposed to work and how just owning the noob bundle built around Victoria 8.1 was supposed to discount the two main bundles this much. Not that I'm complaining of course).

Similar to Ellas Clothes for G8F?Another suggestion, but only if there's multiple V4 outfits you'd like to use with G8F: https://www.daz3d.com/rssy-clothing-converter-from-victoria-4-to-genesis-8-female.
I have the V4 to G3F version and it works very well. The converted outfits also Autofit to G8F. You might still need to use G8F footwear. I haven't had footwear issues with the product, but that may be due to my preference for low/no heels in fantasy art.

https://www.daz3d.com/roaring-20s-bob-for-genesis-8-and-81-females I know it's for the hair but...I cannot ignore how much like Natalie Portman this character looks. Is it just V8.1 or the generic with something for the skin or cosmetics?
Victoria 8.1 is a different Natalie...........Natalie Mars (NSFW) . The promo pictures for Roaring 20's Bob Hair are using Victoria 8.1 skin and makeup - you can tell by the eyebrows and freckles.
But the head morph is probably SA Tilda - a young Natalie Portman clone.

WELL DONE YOU FORGOT TO INCLUED THE FILES. not that its important or anythingShaping presets aren't a requirement in characters, but every one of those icons you were looking for files for are in the iray folder. You'll notice the Daz base characters (Victoria 9 for example) don't come with them. Generally the expectation with characters is that you load the character preset. If not, and you want to mix it, you can use the parameter dials to dial it in as much or as little as you want in part or whole. Shaping presets that are included are a courtesy, but rest assured everything about the character is fully functional without them.
As for how it was missed, all characters and products are tested within DS itself, and if they work and are to standard, they ship. Icons and tips without associated files won't show up within DS, and the scripts they use to detect extra image files in the runtime won't detect extra icons in the People folder, so something like this is an easy miss. But I'll talk to the fellow who wrote the scripts and see how difficult it would be to adjust them to catch the icons.
What happened to the iconic bundles that used to release every Thursday? (Liana, Walter, Olimpia..,)Gordig said:

Well, the core figures cover about every ground I can think of, so there is slightly less inclination for Daz to release new ones. They may be open to suggestions for things you feel they don't cover, provided they don't involve more than two arms or stuff like that (there's a thread about why that's a complicated and very unpractical idea buried around here somewhere).
We still don't have G9 centaurs.
Centaurs aren't that common as a Daz core figure. The last centaur here before Centaur 7 was the standalone figure https://www.daz3d.com/shades-of-atlantis-sagytarios by Luthbel. It says it's for Poser 6 and DS, so the Generation 3 (Victoria 3 & friends) era and DS 2. When the G8 centaurs were released, people were surprised because it had been years between the first 2 centaurs.
Even though the few G9 figures I've bought aren't humans, I wouldn't be interested in a Centaur 9 since it would use Horse 3, which I don't think looks nearly as good or horse-like as Horse 2 or LoRez Horse 2.

I think I got most my cars from Daz3D or Renderosity. I don't think I have any cars from anywhere else. At least I don't need a driver's license to use them.
Does Victoria, Michael and friends need a driver's license to drive these cars?
I think I remember seeing a 3D driver's license model, but I have no idea where it was. Probably wouldn't take much to make one for a modeler.
Make sure you also get the HD add-on, sold separately.

Awesome! Now to see if I can get my paycheck and go to the bank today. Weather is bad right now in NC.
i wonder if I have enough morphs for Genesis 9 to make Thor or Loki? Wait? Does Thor have a beard? Do I have the right beard for him if he has one?
I could try to try to use blender or Zbrush to make them? Zbrush has to be installed. I forgot how to download it.
