Turned out that per one of the articles you were linked that I misremembered who the Disney rivals were. It was Universal & Hanna-Barbera. My post edited.

It seems legal actions like these are a longer-running Disney tradition than live-action remakes of their animated films.

And Disney can be pretty picky. The Rebel and 501st Legions Star Wars cosplay clubs often appear at official Disney events and even sometimes onscreen. However, even RL & 501st members can't be referred to as Star Wars characters in publicity for events (cons, parades, library programs, sports teams, etc.).

(Here I can tell you I cosplay as either a Jedi or an X-wing pilot :D)

All these suits plus those cosplay guidelines leave me marveling that Daz's Star Wars & Marvel ELs are staying under their radar.

Universal had direct interest in Florida. HB are good guys, too - I think. Still a good outcome.

I think you've mentioned your cosplay activities before. Very cool!

I attribute Disney's apparent lack of interest to the fact that these are digital assets, not physical or necessarily even publicly displayed. I could be wrong, though it seems these EL/fanart items exist on all the online 3D stores. Some don't even bother issuing the EL, which makes it caveat emptor. I will say, Daz has given the fanart assets a surprisingly hefty marketing push, as if they don't really expect any pushback. And except for what happened with the Star Trek items, it seems to have worked out for them.

well the 501st were around before Disney bought Star Wars so they're safe plus with all the good they do around the world if the mouse did try anything it would be a publicity nightmare for them

The thing that happened in 2017 was a birthday company with Star Wars and other Disney related character and entertainment packages. They fought it in court, would have to look up how it turned out. Was interesting

My, this is poking at The House of the Mouse with TWO sticks. Not only is there a Nightcrawler clone, but some of those sales page thumbnails look A LOT like one of the most popular Star Wars villains, Admiral Thrawn. Please tell me that white uniform isn't in the bundle? Sorry, I didn't bother to look at The product page.

I don't think Disney cares. I'll be very surprised if anything changes. If we were talking about physical items, the situation might be different.

I don't know about that after all they sued a kindergarten school over the artwork on its wall that was drawn by the kids there

I've read how teens/kids have gotten into trouble with Disney and Nintendo online before but artwork at  a kindergarten that's just not right

  • Morphing Dinner Plate, Round to Octagonal and then some..

    Thank you!

Must admit I was utterly gob-smacked when I first tried the octagonal morph outside the 0-100% range. I really wasn't expecting the lobed or star shape to appear at all.

The mesh is all triangles, which I know is far from ideal - I modelled a round plate and octagonal plate in a stress modeller when I first did it, ensuring that the elements were 8 noded parabolic formulation shell elements for accuracy. Each 8 noded shell then exported as 6 triangles, and I didn't have enough sense at the time to simply rewrite the exporter or re-mesh as linear quad facets. To re-create the model now would be to abandon all modern modellers and return to one that was a bit out of date in 2004. It wasn't something I wanted to do when re-vamping this prop.

    Regards,

    Richard

I am glad to see the Nightcrawler add-on but does Wagner, who looks like the Kurt Wagner of the X-Men, look like a mix of Hiddleston and Gyllenhal or do they look similar to Kurt Wagner.

For what it's worth, what I said to someone elsewhere was that he kind of looks like the improbable love child of Hiddleston and the young Brent Spiner (Data on Star Trek DS9) -- with Jake Gyllenhaal thrown into the mix from some angles. They've all got the same sort of longish, somewhat narrow face.

Yeah, the X-Men drawing in the old comics when Kurt Wagner debuted long ago looks similar, albiet much spookier being drawn as a shadow like he was, to those fellows, particularly Hiddleston.

Have to wonder how this is working, there is so much well known content inspired by Star Trek, Star Wars, X-Men, Thor / Avengers, Harry Potter and a couple of well known computer game IP's as well.

Is Disney even trying to protect the extended universe?

Admiral Thrawn isn't extended universe, he's now as canon as it gets after being the villain in two Disney+ TV series, Star Wars: Rebels (2014-18) and Ahsoka (2024).

Obviously, "canon" is no longer a useful term in that camp.

it's funny on deviant art few years ago I submitted some renders to a group only to rejected because they thought it looked real like a photo and not daz art provided links to all products to prove wasn't. But yeah it is funny now too with AI everyone thinks everything is AI made now because that's what's always in the news and such and so much of it, same with cgi some people think in movies and tv it's always been cgi used in effects and I see people commenting about poor cheap cgi in movies in old and really old movies and tv that used practical effects and glass paintings for large scenes like American Werewolf In London, Star Wars

and even old black and white movies/tv

Yeah the CGI thing is a great comparison.   You still see and hear people talking about "movies before CGI".  You might as well be talking about movies before any sfx  ( which there are none ).   People look at CGI in films and television every day and don't know they're seeing CGI wheither it's a set extension, or a billboard in the background that wasn't there.  You don't hear them complaining the CGI is putting craftsmen out of work because now nobody builds actual sets anymore.
The big difference between the attitude toward CGI and that toward CGI is people are willing to accept unnoticable CGI without question; yet they are scared to death of AI being undetectable which makes no sense when you listen to their arguments about AI " lacking the human touch ", or "looking fake " -- well if AI gets to the point that you can't tell the difference, between art created by AI and a human, or it doesn't look fake; then what does that say about the human touch being all that special except to the artists themselves?
