  • Not trying to start a debate.. but looking at Filter Forge vs Genetica

Well there is a fundamental problem with this. Procedurals are like many things that are in flux level of development. The way different packages implement them are both fundamentally different and constantly being tweaked. The first issue means that things don't translate directly, just like in languages. The second issue means that even if one does try to create a translation program they are shooting at a moving target. That's not to say it can't be done, just that it's not simple. This feature is exactly one of the main features Paolo provides with Reality for Lux (translating 3Dlight shaders, lights and cameras to LUX,) and he does a good job from what I understand. But it takes a bit of work and some things just don't translate. But... yes, that is ofc the holy grail many of us wish for ;)

Eventually they will get shaders (and lighting as these are wed at the hip to some extent) to translate much better but then the focus of incompatibilities will simply shift to rigging, physics, etc...

The best chance though of tackling these issues would be to have some central program that became standard for routing different things through, that allowed various companies (or interested individuals/parties) to write their own translation layer.. a 'print manager' for 3d objects of sorts... DAZ Studio in an optimistic perspective could become that app theoretically if the company positioned itself well, but then it would be a gamble to some extent that they could pull it off.

  • looking for chunky body jewels a bit like these

I came across these body jewels at Rendo but they are very old (for V2) and no longer available.

Does anyone know of anything that might look even vaguely like them. I am wanting them to be suitable for both male and female.

I like them because they have got a vaguely central American look to them although they don't have to but it would be a change from Egyptian which are the only chunky ones I have come across so far.

  • EULA: Laptops and Online Businesses

The laptop thing has been covered before...but I believe it was on the old forums, so it isn't readily accessible

Basically it boils down to this...is it yours and in your contro?. If you aren't leasing/lending it when it's 'outside', then things are fine.

As to the 'online'/multiple buildings...I assume you are talking about an in-house network or something that requires logging in to the company's central servers...I'm not sure if it has been covered...but if the buildings are on the same plot, sharing the same 'network' it's probably fine...but if it's an office in Toledo, Ohio and one in Sante Fe...probably not.

  • Finished render! But...what is this?

I have to admit I couldn't see the speckling you were referring to, so I can't help you there. But I can give you some general feedback.

I love your character. The pose is dynamic and doesn't look stiff, like so many do at first glance, and the facial expression is subtle while doing the job. Also, the way the hair is blowing back just a bit gives action and implies something powerful is going on.

I like the lightning effect, and the yellow lighting on the hair which makes it seem very "there." One small thing to consider with the lightning is moving the central nexus point up a bit. Right now it looks like the lightning is coming from the wrist instead of his palm. Unless that's the look you're going for, of course. :)

Something else is that the necklace isn't laying flat against his chest, so the shadow underneath it can be seen. This gives the impression of movement in the opposite direction of the movement implied by the hair, so that's something to think about.

And I really like the textures on the clothes that you've added. I'm very impressed. The high realism of the clothes contrasts with the flatter textures of the room, which made me wonder if this character is posed against a backdrop instead of in a 3D environment.. Perhaps tweaking the amount of bump and displacement textures on the room will bring that into balance. Or perhaps choosing a different section of the room (such as having a column in the foreground) would help. I like the position of the character in relation to the camera though.

These are just some ideas from someone fairly new to this, so take them with a grain of salt. I'm sure others will have great ideas, as well.

(On a side note, have you heard of the Fabricator, which allows you to change the textures on clothes in DS4.5 easily? I love it, and the rest of its add on packs. I don't know how hard it was to change the textures in gimp, but you may find the Fabricator easier in some circumstances.:) )

DAZ being based in the US has nothing to do with showing nudity. It is by their own choice and right.

The fact that gore is given a bit more leeway than nudity has everything to do with DAZ being in the US, as it reflects the attitude of the general public here. Pretending that it's not related just so you can blame DAZ is flat out silly. If the company was based in Brazil and run by Brazilians, I'm sure the policies would be different.

Isn't Renderosity based in Tennessee? They show quite a bit of nudity on that site. Playboy, Penthouse, Hustler, Freedom of Speech. I believe all of them are part of the USA. There are many nude channels on cable tv that show explicit sex. I'm not sure what you are getting at.

And DAZ is in Utah...which, if not, Prude Central, is very darn close to it.

At least they aren't in Australia.

Freedom of Speech doesn't really apply, as the site is privately owned, so they can make their own rules.

That is what I was saying. It has nothing to do with DAZ being in the US. It is by their choice. I am moving on as I do not want to get into a debate.

I just tried this with the Nose, and her Belly. Both morphs were created correctly in DS4.
Have you tried this, just select a central vertex, use soft selection, and pull the vertx out. Send it to DS and create your morph, it only takes seconds to do. At least that would tell us if you are doing something wrong.

  • Just Because I Can. STUPID THREAD V for Victory

A friend of mine told me this story about his encounter with emus when he was in the army. (The odd format is because this is a copy-paste from the client we used to chat.)

"Native to Australia, but in the mid to late 90s there was a brief craze in the US where people thought they were the future in livestock, and folks flushed millions down the toilet investing in Emu Ranches."

"Well when people failed to make overnight millions, a lot of the farms went abandoned. And soon, we had Emus wandering around Texas like they owned the place."

"Well one of the selling points of emus was that you don't actually have to care for them. They wander around living off of god knows what and when it's time you just come and harvest a chunk of them."

"Anyway, when I was in the Army, an emu beat my entire squad pretty much."

"It was night in the hills around central Texas. We were conducting a field exercise. I was a young, cheeky faced medic asleep in the back of a Bradley IFV, which is basically a transport vehicle with a LOT of guns. Most of the rest of the squad were spread around the bradley, the crew were asleep in their seats. Supposedly two people were up a sentries but I don't remember them doing anything useful. The time was zero-dark-thirty, which is military code for "We don't know what time it is but it was at some ungodly hour of the night.""

"All of a sudden somebody there's some kind of weird commotion. Someone starts yelling "Captain Daniels! Captain Daniels!" like a little kid having a nightmare calls for his daddy."

"We all stir and come crawling out, wondering wth was going on and thinking we were under "attack" (fake, training attack, but attack). The captain, soundly asleep in the turret of the Bradley starts telling everyone to calm down, meanwhile we can hear this guy flopping and thrashing around nearby. The captain turns on a spotlight on the bradley. We see our squadmate flopping around on his back, swatting at an Emu pecking determinedly at his forehead."

"Now the army has very strict rules about harming wildlife. The rules is basically: don't. Crushing a tarantula is a great way to get a disciplinary action filed against you. Killing/harming something larger is a good way to spend a few days in the stockade. So there's a six foot bird going to town on this guy's forehead."

"I don't think it was trying to eat him. I think basically the bird was just being a prick."

"So pretty soon the scene begins to look like some kind of rodeo. The squaddie (we'll call him F***s because that's what we really called him since his name was so close to that) stands up and is now running too and fro around the rocks and shrubs with the emu in close pursuit. The captain tries to bring us together in an attempt to chase the damn thing away. We all stretch out in a line and start yelling and advancing on the emu. We get its attention. It charges us."

"Total chaos. The line breaks, we scatter, everyone yelling and nobody wanting to be the one caught by that damned emu. Someone has the bright idea of taking off his field jacket and waving it in front of the bird, I guess to add to the confusion, like a cape for a matador. Several of us try that. The result: several jackets replaced when we come back in a few days later. It sort of rumbles at us and just starts pecking at anything that comes near."

"We continue to scatter like roaches while the captain tries to bring us all back ("Rally on me! F***s, get back here!"... etc). Of course, whenever it heads his way he jumps back up on the bradley. Finally he unbuttons (opens the hatch on the bradley) and gives the order to mount (all aboard). So we haul ass for the door and cram ourselves into the back. Safely inside, we wait for the damned thing to wander off, huddled together for protection from a six foot bird in one of these: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f7/1BFV01.jpg/800px-1BFV01.jpg"

"Half an hour later the captain takes a look around from the turret, informs us that its wandered off, and everyone tries to go back to sleep. And I guess that's that."

"So I guess the moral of this story is that emus are ***holes and US Soldiers can be kind of wussy sometimes."

I hope Misty Whisky is safe; I'm pretty sure she's on Long Island and works in the City.

Here in Central Massachusetts, the rain was worse late yesterday afternoon than it was any time on Monday, with some roadway flooding. Winds were strong on Monday, but not extreme, with 50 mph gusts...

Upstate / Central NY through to the Southern Tier appear to have been spared- some decent wind, but not bad at all. The scenes and reports coming out of CNN about NYC, Delaware, NJ, WV, Virginia, and other locations are absolutely mind boggling though.

...very familiar with the story as I was living in North Central Wisconsin when it happened. (unfortunately my connectivity is really sucky today, keeps dropping out so streaming anything is pretty much an exercise in futility).

Interestingly, Lake Superior is the only lake that will not be affected.

...and "'ol Michigan" will be more in a full "boil".

Just checked a couple of the news sites in Philly where my client is based and it sounds like they are hunkering down until this is over, SEPTA, (Philly's transit service), PATCO Rail, and even Amtrak are suspending all service until at least Tuesday (even then "as soon as conditions allow").

The NWS which has been tracking Sandy says that many areas will experience some of the lowest pressures in history as the storm passes through.

Almost wondering if I might be able to take the day off as all weekend I have been feeling more and more "under the weather" myself.
