  • I got it because of a tree Complaint Thread

    Complaints:

Hot and muggy weather causing my wall unit A/C to ice over several times per day requiring shut down to high fan only until it melts causing it to get even hotter inside.
Clueless neighbors in building propping doors open to make it "cooler" in the interior hallway, not realizing that heat rises making the hall outside my second floor apartment hot meaning those of us on this floor have to run our A/C more to cool down.

    Happy Happy Joy Joy:

Garibaldi hair for me this month! (Not so joy joy is now having to learn it and look at hairstyle pics to get references.)

Definitely complaint-worthy stuff there! A freezing up A/C is blecherous!

What I have actually done is purchased an wind up timer to "ding" after 1 hour so I can turn the A/C to high fan for 10 minutes before switching it back to cool to prevent it icing over. Doesn't help when i am not home though. How I miss having an actual thermostat like my last apartment and central air.

So "Central Autism" would basically be midway along the "autistic spectrum," I gather. More like my own son, then (the old "PDD-NOS", or about midway in developmental delay severity between "classic" or severe autism and the milder Aspergers, like my own, that frequently passes undetected until into adulthood. I can even pass as NT if I choose to, from time to time. I don't know if my son ever will.

There are several members of this board, in fact, who are openly ASD: one at least is a vendor in the store.

Eustache, I am far from knowing all this ;) my son is almost 4, and took a lot of .. adjusting from us all. the time between "suspection" to definitiveness was about half an year ( or 8 moths, he was first time seen by orthopedagog in march 2012, when he was 2.5) , and just now discovering the diversity of spectrum.

But yes.. man, there is this whole of translation, I think what you mean by classic is what we cal here "Kernel"- Core, or main. It is the most sever case, and as per rule, as our "parents therapist"explained to us , children displaying clear signs of autism before turning 3 , are mostly classified as "classic"(again, the word ;) ) autistic.
I on the other hand like to think about my son as a changeling .. I know in the past it was a negative name, but by now, a child of fairy is rather nice, don't you think?

And by the way, it is so nice to talk with someone about this ( sorry guys for hijacking the tread!!) ... All around my friends who have children , would rather not hear me talking, since they're scared. And my son is in the therapy center, with 7 other children, who's parents live to far. So thank you. It feels really good :)

Hi again KaribousBoutique :) talked to you in the tread you made for your son :)
Mine is still going trought the diagnosis, for now we know for sure that he has ASD- Autistic Spectrum Disorder , just none is quite aqurate to describe him, bur since there were clear signs before his 3rd year, there is more talk about a "Central Autism "?? ( this is ho would you translate it from dutch?
I cannot even express the progress he made in last year.. he talks ( not much, bur can say he's hungry or thirsty), plays, even rememvers names of his fellow children from the Therapy Centrum :D:D

I remember your story from my other thread! And I've always wondered how diagnosis and intervention happened in other countries. It's kind of a mess here in the US because in many states, private insurance does not have to cover speech or behavioral therapy unless it is caused by a head injury. Government assistance is VERY linited. The schools do almost all the work (and my son's schools have thankfully been amazing.) However, children in my state cannot enter the public schools until age 3. Evan also had clear signs very early, but we couldn't afford treatment. Evan had virtually no words at age 3. Still, he's come so far! He still doesn't have "conversations," but he will clearly ask things like, "Mom, can you get the ipad charger? The batteries are low." And though he as an aide with him, he is in a regular classroom, able to sit through entire lessons. When he was 4 he couldn't be in the regular class for more than 10 minutes before he lost focus and began getting frustrated.

I think I understand the "central autism" idea. Here in the US (and maybe around the world?) diagnosis is done according to the DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). In the 4th edition, autism and Asperger's fall under a category of communication disorders called "pervasive developmental disorders." (PDD for short.) Under this set of criteria, there isn't much room for an entire spectrum. Kids with "autism" according to the DSM would likely be the "central autism" you spoke of. And so, by these narrow definitions, other people on the spectrum are either Asperger's or "PDD-NOS." (pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified.) It's a nightmare because without the official, medical "AUTISM" label, children here get little or no assistance outside of school.

Sorry to everyone who's not interested in learning about autistic diagnostic criteria! Not trying to hijack the thread, lol...

I did not know BWSman, but I think his attitude is one that my family is trying to imitate. No matter what has happened or what has been "lost," there is still SO MUCH to experience in this amazing world, even if it has to happen in a slightly different way than we expected. I'm very, very glad that this thread caught my attention. He sounds like he was the kind of person I'd have liked to meet.

The prizes look pretty cool, too!

Oh, and Krissy, if you're Dutch, you're going to like my render. :)

Nope. Me neither. I have an idea, but it isn't going to be as obvious as portraying a physical disability.

And I cannot tell you the LIGHT YEARS of progress my son has made since he was four. He's certainly not NT, but he's so much... calmer, able to communicate, and social. :-) I pray you have the same blessings we've had.

I've never understood why so many people here associate learning about stuff with "not fun", and not having to learn about stuff with "fun". Seems like it's just as easy to do things right, and with greater impact, than to do things without without knowing the basics....but anyway.....

And I'm sorry you see me as a mean, nasty scrutinizer who is ruining all your fun. Some people enjoy learning, but I guess that doesn't apply here. A simple "thank you for the advice" would suffice. Y'know, being nice, like you guys expect of everyone else.

Oh, and I forgot to mention....

Since the light from your camera flash underwater gets its intensity filtered just like the sunlight does, you generally need to get very close to your subjects in order to illuminate them. Which means if you're doing a full shot of a diver, you'll have to use a VERY wide angle lens to get the entire subject in the picture, as well as be close enough to illuminate the subject.

Which is why viewers tend to expect underwater shots to be taken using a wide angle lens, not the standard Carrara 50mm lens.

All of these little details go together to SELL the concept to viewers.

Sorry about that. Again - just unknowledgeable me messing around for fun with my favorite character. She is using her own light rig - not what comes in the kit.

Scott, you're an angel, aren't you? :P That's exactly what I need, if I only manage to connect soon enough, I'll use them! Unfortunately, I'm in the Central European time zone, so it's UTC/GMT + 2 hours (summer time now, normally it's UTC/GMT + 1 hour). DAZ is in Buffalo, so it's currently UTC/GMT - 4 hours (normally UTC/GMT - 5 hours). I'm not sure if I manage to have it all done. Thanks anyway!!!

cecilia.robinson, thanks so much for all the input on the entries. You took a lot of time to do that. It is very much appreciated. I wish more would do that, it helps all of us grow. I love to see you folks exchanging ideas. It makes us all better artists.

    I am humbled!

    :-)

Dear Music2U4U, it is all my pleasure. The competitions here are a great place to learn, in my humble opinion, even better than tutorials. I am fully aware I have little chances to get even a honourable mention, but hey, it's the things we learn during the contest that are the most important awards we get, right?

Carola, I fully understand your dismay regarding so-called freebies. I had the same feeling when I learnt my beloved Genesis Gorilla used to be free :P! But my advice is: think about a product you want, save your money to buy it, but before you checkout, grab ALL THE FREEBIES. Basically, it looks like you only have to pay for one purchasable to be eligible to get any freebie. This way, you'll have your Hexagon (I grabbed it when it was free, but never had a chance to try it; too busy with DS). Still, I feel it's not the best marketing idea to limit the freebies to Platinum Club. I'm afraid DAZ is not fully aware that a lot of its customers come from countries where dollar is not a native currency. For instance, in most Central European countries like Poland or the Czech Republic, dollar is around three times their native currency (I checked today, the current exchange rate for the American dollar is a little bit more than 3,15 Polish zloty). What I want to put through is that the membership is usually too high a price for them, whereas they too buy from DAZ and used to buy more when there were real monthly freebies. For instance, Mareek from Rendo - the one whose hair I used - is a Pole and I know more guys from these regions who fiddle in DS.

To cut things short, Carola, think about a product you want and when buying it, checkout with all the freebies.

By the way, where can I learn about the August contest please? How are the judges elected and how the awards are selected (I think about what kind of a little gift could I contribute)? Regards and good luck to all.

  • Site Maintenance, Still?

Ok I’ve managed to use the recent email to get to an advertised items and from there to the forums. I did a quick look around to see info an this “scheduled maintenance” and couldnt find anything or even any postings about it at least current there is one for a maintenance back in February. So I’ll ask this here and now...

Is the store still in “DAZ 3D is down for scheduled maintenance from 11:00PM MST to about 12:00AM MST.
Please check back soon. We apologize for the inconvenience.” mode?

This is gone beyond pissing me off now since it just happened when I had items in my shopping cart and during checkout, one of them a now expired fast grab item late last night. Its been giving me that message since just about 1am central time.

  • RPG Appreciation Thread

    ...yep.

Stopped at Third Edition. as Fourth felt too much like a P&P MMO for my purposes, particularly with addition the Edge Attribute (basically a "luck" attribute that could be used in effect as "extra lives" like in a videogame). In the old system you had one H.o.G [Hand of God] to pull your hoop out of the proverbial fire with, so you really had to watch what your character got him or herself into (and it came at a hefty cost).

Also, the flavour of the original just wasn't there anymore as the publishers advanced the timeline by seven years (basically killing a lot of the cool ongoing subplots), homogenised magic (there was really little distinction anymore between the shamanistic and hermetic schools), Riggers pretty much became useless, and the entire American Native influence that was so central to the game's original setting was pretty much abandoned.

Also there were annoying rules like skill caps that limited how good a character could really become in their chosen field, so there was little incentive to improve you character after a certain point (at least for the non awakened).

...and Decking (now called "Hacking") was still a mess. Also, now anyone, from a mage to a street sam could effectively hack the matrix (without "jacking in" anymore) as everything went totally wireless and CyberDecks went the way of the mainferame. Basically a character used what amounted to a "souped up" type of smartphone instead.

I hear there's a Fifth Edition out but haven't even looked into it since our game group pretty much broke up a while back and not about to sink a lot of money into an entire new set of game books and supplements.

Pink Mohawks, Street Shamans, Console Cowboys/girls, and Rocker Boys forever!

  • Summer Time Savings

    DAZ_jared said:
The email was sent around 1:45 PM local time. I apologize if there was a delay for anyone receiving it. The reasoning behind this thread was to make customers who might not receive the email aware of the savings opportunities. Unfortunately we all live in different time zones. Things like this are bound to happen, it is the consequences of living in a global society. We took steps to try and ensure the majority of our users were able to use the coupon. In the future we will be more aware of those in other time-zones.

Thank you for the clarification, however I would (still) like to point your attention to the fact that the actual core of this problem has little to do with time zones, because the newsletter got massively delayed for a lot of people, everywhere and in each time zone.

You say that you sent the mail at 1:45 PM local time, which I guess is Utah, so the time was 13:45 Utah time = 19:45 GMT, which is 20:45 UK Summer Time (already) and 21:45 in Central Europe. Even if you ignore Europe, that was (already) more than half of the coupon's life span lost for your US customers as well.

However, my "copy" of the eMail was sent "16:52:15 -0400", which is 20:52 GMT and 21:52 UK Summer Time.

This means two things - your mail server is actually located on the east coast (because it is GMT-4 like New York, and not GMT-6 like Utah or GMT-7 like San Francisco) and it took 1 hour and 7 minutes to actually sent my copy - and a lot longer for the other user in Sweden (see above).

So your newsletter provider takes several hours until he eventually sends single mails. And this added to the almost 14 hours that you already lost and wasted when you sent the mail in the afternoon! And this not just delays Europe, it delays everyone who just has the bad luck to be at the end of the list.

The only solution: If you start a campaign like this, just mail it one day in advance. Or at least at a time that respects a) your own late sending plus b) several hours to process the mails by your newsletter server. And - please - don't blame us for receiving it late, when you actually delayed it yourself.

This way you get happy customers and no more need to apologize for stuff like this afterwards...
