Filament Mirror
There was another discussion about this in the Filament / Cell shaded rendering in The Commons I read yesterday. If my link didn't make it, look at page 17, about 2/3rds of the way down the page.

Anche quelli fanno brodo, ragazzo.

Oggi per esempio regalano i "colori" per IRay. Io acciuffo anche se IRay mi fa schifo, estraggo le textures e le uso per 3Delight o Filament che son molto meglio.
Filament MirrorThanks, crosswind.
There's quite a bit of capability in filament but it has not yet been implemented yet in DAZ, unfortunately. Even with the latest updates, there is still a gap to what is possible.
Anime Toons and Filatoon Shader Q&AUnfortunately, switching to iray view and back again to filament didn't change anything (although I was at least able to confirm that reflections work fine with those settings in iray). I have a feeling that this might be one of those Filament features that isn't fully implemented yet. According to the GitHub it's also supposed to support depth of field with bokeh, but that's not available in Daz's version either.Anime Toons and Filatoon Shader Q&ASounds weird, but I have had to switch the type of scene setting from filament to one of the others (iRay, texture shading, wire) and then back for the program to take any changes into effect. Not always, but sometimes. I hope I explained that correctly.
Anime Toons and Filatoon Shader Q&AI asked ChatGPT (which actually gives surprisingly good responses usually for questions about DS use) and it said this:
Yes, you can create mirror reflections in Daz Studio using the Filament renderer, though Filament’s real-time rendering engine does not support true ray-traced reflections like Iray. However, you can achieve a mirror effect using clever techniques:
Steps to Create Mirror Reflections in Filament:
1. Set Up a Reflective Surface:
• Apply a reflective shader to the surface you want to use as a mirror.
• Use the Daz Studio Default Shader or a custom shader with metallic and roughness settings:
• Metallic: Set it to 1 (fully metallic).
• Roughness: Set it to 0 (perfectly smooth surface).
2. Simulate Reflections:
• Since Filament doesn’t render actual reflections, you can simulate them using Screen Space Reflections (SSR). Enable SSR in the Render Settings for Filament:
• Go to Render Settings > Filament > Screen Space Reflections and turn it on.
• This will provide basic reflective effects for objects visible in the camera’s view.
3. Adjust Lighting:
• Place lights in your scene carefully to enhance the look of the mirror-like surface.
• Use HDRI lighting to add environmental reflections if needed.
4. Use Camera Tricks for More Complex Reflections:
• Duplicate and flip your scene or objects behind the mirror for advanced effects.
• Use a secondary camera to render the mirrored perspective and composite it into your scene.
5. Test in Viewport:
• Preview the effect directly in the Filament viewport to fine-tune settings.
For higher-quality and more realistic reflections, you may need to switch to Iray, as it supports true ray-traced reflections, but these steps will give you a reasonable approximation in Filament.
FilaToon / Cell shaded rendering with FilamentFilament MirrorAttached 1st SS should be what cain-x meant ~~
With iray uber shader, it cannot reflect anything with Filament drawstylep other than Env. map... with Filatoon shader (metallic), it cannot reflect anything... AFAIE ~~
FilaToon / Cell shaded rendering with FilamentMy submission to one of the Daz+ contests, used deco wallpaper. Does anyone know how to create reflections in Filament? I had to render from a different angle and composite in Photoshop.

Is there a way to get a reflection in a mirror in FilaToon (or Filment for that matter.)
I'd love to know this too. There is an option for "screen-space reflections", but it doesn't seem to actually do anything. In fact, there are honestly quite a few Filament options that don't seem to actually do anything, which is honestly perplexing.
The Mac FAQOn page 89 of this thread someone brought up my old MacBook Pro M1 review on https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/comment/7369491/#Comment_7369491. I had to use it to track down the references myself since the Benchmark threads had seemed to disappeared and I couldn't find my documentation.
There was an improvement, but if you compare the results that others are finding for Windows with modern Nvidia cards the difference is a like a 1 minute versus 20 - 30 minutes. I had shut down my second monitor and all other apps, leaving only D|S to work alone on this computer. My normal working method is to have Google Chrome with maybe 10 tabs open, File Manager, maybe Word or Excel open but reduced, and any others that I have been researching. How that impacts my real world rendering experience, I can't say.
I am just now downloading a few more products, hair at this time, so it may be a few days before I have enough products to play with a normal creative render to compare with. Or to see how USC2 handles it. (Just remembered I need to get my codes in D|S for my plug-ins still.) Need some more wardrobe, environments, poses... not everything of course, it will take maybe four to five months to download everything I want from the outstanding 22,627 files that are ready to download. I have to budget our internet demand so we don't run out of 1.2 Tb per month.
Remember, the Apple M1, M2, M3, and M4 do not have Nvidia in them. They are CPU renders only. And can't do Filament/FilaToon at this time. Hopefully faster than DAZ Soon™.

The function called filatoon is not displayedFilament cannot be supported on the Mac in Daz Studio 4.x, it requires a newer version of the Qt application framework and switching to that will break the existing SDK - it will therefore be the next major version of DS (Daz Studio 5, or whatever they call it).

Filament MirrorThanks for asking the question !! I'd like to know as well as I've just started playing with Filatoon + Filament recently.
I've found no way to make a surface to reflect things like a mirror with Filament either... I thought it could since it's named as Filament (PBR).
See if others can give some advices... except for rendering a separate image as a texture map for the mirror or post-work ~~
Filament MirrorHello!
Is it at all possible to have mirror surfaces in Filament?
I was trying to convert an old scene from Iray to Filatoon and a mirror surface becomes this grey area and I could not find any way to make it behave like a mirror in Filament.
MimicMolly's Renders & WIPsTo clarify, I am writing a story with my OCs. So the story is in text form, but I want to create illustrations for it. However, my plan is to make these OCs hand drawn, so I'm using DS to make consistent references of them. That way I can pose the models and then eyeball them, while I sketch them by hand. There's no point in trying to just do "proper" renders of them in DS because assets required for the mains' unique looks just don't exist, except in my imagination. (I will never find long, voluminously thick mane-like hair for the main guy. So it's best for me to draw that from scratch. I've done so several times already.)
But this bunny boy is not really a main character, at least right now. (I've barely introduced him in my WIP. There was another character not intended to be "important," but the developments said otherwise.) The bunny boy has a very striking appearance, so he needs a reference model. I also need to find rabbit ear props. Even if it's just a headband with bunny ears, because I don't care for clipping. I also know that he'd look sick in Filatoon Filament, so I might do a half-drawn/edited toon render of him, if I ever finish. Though the half-drawn would already be in the texturing as well, because that's currently the only way I can edit DS assets to my specifications.
The other characters from my story are all mostly regular-looking humans. So I just need to dial spin whatever DAZ figure, and get something close enough. I strongly prefer a unisex figure like G9, but I don't mind using G8F or G3M or whatever older models.
Soft shadows in Tera's Bedroom?Thank you ! will try it again ~~
Edit: Well, I had to say I could not make it for the 1st time .... I had to switch Texture Shaded / Filament drawstyle back and forth before seeing the soft shadow. Not sure if it's a bug ~
And the difference is just the value of spread angle and lumen... the former is the trick for the soft shadow which is totally different from Iray ~~ interesting.

@TheNathanParable That's incredible! Gorgeous work! How did you get the glow on the water ripple line where her body meets the water?
Funny enough, that's actually a glitch, lol. The 3d ripple (from SY's ripples and wakes) uses an opacity map to blend out the edges. This looks fine in Filament from the top, but from the front you get the usual depth fighting from semi transparent objects.I tried to fix this using the same technique I used in the other thread to get that translucent shirt effect; I created a geometry shell with the exact same shader settings as the base, except one has soft transparency while the other has clamped transparency. If tweaked right it's pretty seamless. However, I didn't realise until after I posted that I forgot to adjust the geometry shell to be much closer to the base surface, causing that slightly glitchy 'glow' to appear, lol.
Edit: Oh, and just in case I misunderstood and you actually just meant the lighting at that part, I think I also added a point light under the water. They don't cast shadows in Filament anyway, making them good for adding a little colour variance to a scene.
Hahah The "glitchy glow" is a happy accident then. Very cool! :D The image turned out SO GOOD! Nicely done!
Soft shadows in Tera's Bedroom?I would also love to know how that is done, shadows are not very reliable or controllable in filament. The only way I have found of doing this is 2 renders one filament and one iray, blended in photoshop.

Very nice images, everyone.
Do we have any tutorial on how to set up multiple lights with shadows in Filatoon?
All you need to do is set the lights to cast shadows, and then make sure the Filatoon surface has cast shadows and receive shadows turned on.The only other thing you need to consider are the limitations of Filament in general. You can only have one direct light period, and iirc you can only have about six spotlights casting shadows. Point lights can't cast shadows in Filament.
Also, the quality of shadows cast from spotlights depends on both the distance and light spread. The wider and further away the light, the blockier and worse it'll be. At a far enough distance it won't cast shadows at all.
Thank you very much for the explanation. Off to experiments.
