BJ Cycles - Cycles Renderer in Daz Studio

Filament requires a lot of work with material settings to get best results.
IRAY also requires a lot of "work" for best results. The only difference is IRAY is considered the defaul. All asset makers do this work for you. If asset makers supported Filament to the same level, the amount of work for the user would be the same as IRAY. Whatever engine you might try that isn't IRAY will have this same lack of support out of the gate. Filament is only an afterthought because there's no push for it. I give priority to assets that come with Filament support. I love the way it looks. But it's a losing battle at this point.

I have terrific respect for what you've accomplished so far, @bluejaunte . I do wonder if the implementation will be in any way better than what we've already got with Iray and Filament. The former is, of course, completely reliant on NVidia gpus, unless one wants to wait a very long time for a cpu render. The latter is very fast and gpu-agnostic but limited in what it can do. Filament requires a lot of work with material settings to get best results. Even with Iray, I usually end up doing additional work to get the desired results. It's a problem! I would not care for another render solution that requires more tweaking to get best results. It's better than having to apply and customize renderer-specific shaders, but it would just depend what your cycles implementation can actually do with existing shaders and how much extra work I would have to do to get results that please me.
Subjectively at least I often feel Cycles renders look better. How much of that is down to more skill of the person or more control of the shaders in Blender I don't know.
As far as features, I know at least one we're missing completely in Iray: motion blur.

That's a good point and its a recurring theme.
Octane was mentioned earlier in this thread. That too is a NVIDIA-only renderer. A number of us gave that a try after the Daz-Octane Kit came out, and we found out that we needed to customize materials and shaders. I suppose it depends on the user's goals: some really enjoy that degree of customization; others want an expedient, few-click workflow. Perhaps, as a comparison to Filatoons, its worth pointing out that few PAs appear to have picked up on Octane and put forth related products. So, could a new Daz-Cycles kit overcome these challenges?
It's worth mentioning too that for 3Delight a number of users volunteered to share their shaders. Perhaps if a Daz-Cycles alternative could pick on that crowd-sourced trend, there'd be enough momentum to justify this new thrust.
Cheers!

I remember before Filatoon, how many people were outraged by Filament

I was one of a very small number of forum users using it and actually adding line work and filtering in post (Batch processing through Gimp)

Thanks Wendy I'll try that. Mesh mixer looks interesting too. Thanks again. I'm guessing there's no grid fill in Carrara. No one has said.
no, Headwax had this issue 3D printing his surfboard, wanting to calculate volume and I suggested Meshmixer
I have 3D printer I bought years ago I cannot use anymore because it's DRM stopped recognising the costly proprietary filament cartridges I bought

I threw my old printer one out though they still sell it for 600 dollars , not enough room , I have too many shoes I guess . New 3D printers are very easy compared to the older ones . Like humans I guess .

So did anybody managed to find a way to fix the viewport performance being so bad? I updated my drivers and installed the microsoft update. Nothing really helped. And my GPU is RTX 5090. Daz6 is still alpha stage with how unstable and laggy it is/
There is nothing more you can do - this is a Daz problem.
Which affects some usersmore than, or to the exclusion of, other users. You do need to be clear about which "viewport issue" you mean - some have problems in the non-render modes, some don't; Irayt mode seems to behave differently from DS 4 but it is still hard to tell if we are all seeing the same thing; I am not sure if there have been issues reported with Filament.

There is a Daz to Blender bridge. You could use cycles there. I would just use Opengl or Filament with Daz Studio 4 and use ComfyUI to fix your renders with Qwen Image edit. Locally don't spend any money. If you can't afford a 16gb video card you can use a SXM2 Nvidia V100 tesla 16gb of vram with a SXM2 to PCIE adapter. This card does not have video out but if your PC has built in video you are golden. If you can find one a 3090 is a great card but they are hard to get now.
Aren't the SXM things targeted at AI? Do they have IRAY in them?
In answer to you first question, no. These Tesla gpgpus are targeted at computational work, which includes AI, scientific work, data analysis, video editing and 3d rendering. The focus on AI is just marketing.
The V100's are currently supported by iray, but are deprecated, meaning they could be dropped at any time in an update.
Driver support is also "dead", as they are designated "legacy", and are only getting security updates. They are completely dead as of late 2028(no speciific date has been announced).
Personally, i wouldn't recommend these due to these reasons, as well as the laundry list of things you have to deal with in relation to them and current costs.
The main issue, your system may not even boot with a card like this installed. This has to do with the large BAR(Base Address Register) these cards use.
Even with "Above 4G decoding" and "Resizable BAR" in BIOS, it doesn't mean it's going to support the 16GB BAR required for these cards.
Cost, based on u.s. ebay pricing, is also an issue right now, as they are higher than used RTX 3060 prices, for a full setup(card, adapter, heatsink and fan(s)).
I'm comparing to a 3060, as this is what some current benchmarking, such as octanebench 2025, results are showing as equivalent.
Other than the extra 4GB of vram, these cards aren't really worth the investment, imho.
The Torquinox Carrara ThreadThanks Wendy. Sorry to hear about your 3D printer. DRM on ink and filament are the devil! It should really be illegal. It makes everything so much more expensive. And in your situation, it bricked your printer!

Found two things I'm not liking with 6
Animatelite is gone. And the default viewport setting (Not Filament or Nvida) Doesn't load models correctly.I'll be sticking with 4 until these bugs are fixed.
AnimateLite 9and the full versions) are not (yet) updated for DS 6 - see the evergreen thread in the Daz Studio Discussion forum.
What do you mean that the Viewport doesn't load the models? If they are not drawing correctly, which GPU is handling DS (stand-alone or on CPU)? That is a driver setting in the nVidia/Catalyst Control panel.

the new game ready items need their own store. or a filter to get rid of them.
And while you are adding filters, how about a filter by texture type: 3DL, IRAY, and Filament?
EDIT: I didn't mean daveso when I said "you" above. I should have said "they". My apologies.
I also should have mentioned HDRI in my list of types. I am often unsure which item "environments" are actual objects and which are HDRI's,

I'm giving up on DS6. Everything is going from bad to worse. First, the CMS got corrupted. After I reinstalled DS6, the installation disappeared. I closed and reopened DIM, and then DS6 appeared showing that it occupies -1 MB of disk space. I uninstalled it, and now the installation fails. I restarted my PC, and now DIM refuses to download DS6. I'll wait for a more stable version. In any case, I'm only interested in the NPR render with Filament.
Those don't sound like DS6 issues. They do sound liiike the sort of thing that could be triiggered by disc problems, or rogue system level software such as security software.

Studio 6 Filament on Mac: Some surfaces are textured solid blackPadone said:
Yes filament is advertised by DAZ as a fast preview for iray, in this sense it is compatible with the standard iray shaders. However, it may have issues with custom shaders, and also has limitations as others already pointed out. But as it is intended as a fast preview the limitations are expected.
Filament as a fast preview on Mac is performing far worse than Filament as a fast preview on Windows. Neither of the models that I used for my OP behaved that way on a Windows box with Filament in use in the Viewport. That's why I think the Mac version needs work, beyond whatever inherent limitations Filament has in general.
Carrara Folks Opinion On The New Daz Studio? Thanks for the feedback, folks. My needs are pretty basic for now, just iRay renders with purchased products, e.g. Stonemason and similar. No plugins, rigging, DForce, blended weight, or even Filament. So DS6 apprently has reached my minimal need, supporting the latest nVidia cards for iRay. The bad news is SHEEESH, these things are expensive. Here is the top choice at Micro Center (although I will probably get my long time custom builder to do it, getting exactly what I need and no bloatware). (If I can sell a kidney to pay for it)

Quite honestly, although I am not a PC newbee and I have done several installations like Poser to VUE or C4d, DAZ to Zbrush or Hexagon, all the DS Bridges to Blender are to complicate for me.
Not that I won't make it in the end, but it takes too much effort. with a new Blender release, you'll have to do it all over again.
I like what I can do with Genesis 8 in DAZ Studio, but I don't like the limitations coming with IRAY and dforce.
