...interesting.  In the Iray render settings tab under General. is the render target set to "New Window" or "Direct to File"?.

    New Window.

...as I am using two displays, I cannot replicate the issue.

The render window with the Stop/Resume/Cancel buttons should automatically appear in front of the application window once rendering begins.

Could you post a few screenshots?

    And...

    Happy Birthday!!!

    Dana

    +1  BIRTHDAY wishes

...and thank you. Yep, one more trip around the central main sequence G type stellar primary for me. Another 584,000,000+ miles travelled in the "logbook".

As of today I am eligible for early Social Security Retirement if I so choose, as well as senior discounts on Amtrak.

With every year that passes I would expect my odds to win the Lotto should increase as usually it's only us old buggers who seem to win it.

  • Show Us Your Bryce Renders! Part 9

Way much better, Art...can just about see the rug now - nuts might be savedwink

That's a good point Horo makes too about the screen darkness and how a picture, particularly a dark one, changes with its position. I sit about two feet from my screen, my eye-height is about level with the top of the monitor, so I have to tilt it (think of a central point on the screen and so I have it adjusted this point - the screen's plane - to be perpendicular as to point towards my eyes). But, I guess, everyone knows that.

i didnt know humans could live in 120 degrees

    serious snowcone weather. :)

140's in central australia sometimes, hot winds just shrivel stuff up almost while you are looking. Don't mind heat so much as humidity, an old school tropical storm can make everything real wet without actually raining which iz pretty wierd  laugh

  • Working with 3D (and DAZ): One 4K screen or 2 QHD Screen?

I'd make sure you get something that displays colours well and accurately too. Also contrast.

I went a slightly different route with three 27" monitors, because I wanted to play games on three screens too.

I do most of my graphics work on the central monitor so that's where I spent more - it's an AOC q2770 QHD - the colours are the best I have seen on any monitor I have had.

  • RRRR - Murphy’s Law Render Contest *closed*

Time for some comenting, you have all been very productive, lots of it taken from life, seem everyone had their touchdowns with Murphy.

Kismet#1: yes you can turn deamon for that, I once had a car rented on summer holiday, made the shopping, including icecream and fresh meat, put everything into the trunk, closed the lid... and the car keys were inside, the car closed, no way to get it, had to call the rental company, they towed the car 200km to the next central of their company where I was told I could collect the car two day later, pay a fee of 200€ and have a cautious look to the shopping bags in the trunk still sitting there. The luckiest part was that the bags were really tight, just took them directly to the bin. I was deamoning it out for days.

Ken#2: yes that, me setting of the fire alarm in my mother kitchen by trying to barbecue in the oven, so spot on, LOL

Ken#3: I shudder thinking about that, It gonna leave marks from the beak...

Gopherus#3: hehe, that like "driving home for christmas" on the radio these days

emsim#2: Now that a true hero, first get to safety then see if the girl is still in a state worth saving..

luci45#4: That is the perfect pout! As weird as it it the girl with the antlers looks perfectly normal

Karibou#1: poor girl has had it rough, she needs to render herself a trojan horse to hide in!

Gopherus#4: haha, those guy in space suits with the cameras its glorious

purrcat#2, oh the tragedy of that, but now he's got his hands free to take her into his arms, I' so hope he will.

Kismet#2: that malicious look on her face, perfect!

Totte#3: The lady on the right back looks like she is about to take care of that fool, otherwhise that has a very lovely atmosphere, should be a happy romantic evening.

Chanteur#1: that looks like she should make sure there are still all parts of her soul with her... so much about drinking the other people in the bar beautiful.

Luci45#5: seriously where do you even get all that stuff, what is leaping out for the dragonfly? Must be the dragonfish, but who makes dragonfish for daz... Well if I were him I'd turn around and close that door again

purrcat#3: I'm still surprised all those chicken made it though the day, I somehow expect to see one less every day ;-)

Luci45#6: he would be perfectly fine as some pop celebrity so no worries here, just waiting to see those paparazzi reappear

now I go and complete my runtime list for the next pull

Just about every hand gesture that can be made means something in some culture. It helps to take the gesture in context of who made it. A metal rock singer is depicted and the creator was probably someone from the central United States (possibly Utah) and possibly not a heavy metal afficiando.  The banner next to the hand also says "Ready to Rock".  These could be clues that they were not out gesturing the European gesture for "bullsh*t".

For Heavy Metal North America it should be facing the other way.

  • Daz Studio and Linux

DAZ will most likely build a Linux (Android) version at some point in the future if they want to stay relevant since the mobile market is just ramping up and is already rolling over the desktop market in so many areas. With increased hardware performance and overall developments that are already currently in the works in the mobile platform it's the place to be.

This isn't to say that the desktop market won't be their primary platform for a while now but I'm hoping that someone at DAZ is forward enough to realize that a mobile platform for DAZ content is going to take some development and that sooner is better then later in at least getting their feet wet, even if it (the first version or two) isn't something they end up releasing to the general public. If they do that, then developing for Linux takes on a different cost/benefit ratio. This type of realization will happen for more companies as they jar themselves loose of the traditional paradygm we've all been mired in.

Again, the desktop isn't going away soon, but there is a transition period where a new paradygm becomes dominant and we as a society have stepped into it.

Side note: mobile doesn't mean small screens as we think of it today. New mobile platforms are gearing up to be a central processing system that can attach to various hardware and displays. This is part of the 'paradygm shift' I'm referring to. And yes, desktops will continue to have a hardware advantage over mobile, but as focus switches, that advantage starts to wane (eventually... talking a while in the future,) just as it did for mini computers. While this shift might take 5+ years to be strongly evident across the board, foundations take a while to put in place.

One more relevant point on this is how I've been stressing paradygm shift rather then evolution. We often think of evolution when someone says paradygm shift, but they are very different. With a paradygm shift, there are changes that come that have no relationship to the previous paradygm. New ways of thinking and doing. The most common mistake people make is to think in terms of an evolution when a paradygm shift is going on. By definition, with a paradygm shift, we don't know all of the pieces that are going to be in the final analysis. Everyone is guessing and grabbing. We can't plan the same as with an evolution of technology. What seems to work best is to put a reasonable amount of resources into staying current without overcommiting to technology that is changing faster then quicksand, but we must put some resources into it so we don't get left behind. When the changes come, we need to be prepared to take advantage of them rather the scrambling to come up to speed. At least this is my take after watching this industry for more years then I care to admit (for what that's worth.)

DS on Android is not likely to happen.  Most Android devices have <1GB RAM, with the largest topping out at 2GB and CPUs in the 1.0->1.6GHz range (granted some have 8 cores like this NotePro 12.2 here).  The resource usage for DS has grown such that it isn't feasible to put a full DS on Android (or iOS).  You might see a viewer type program that will show a low-poly version of a scene.  All in my opinion, of course.  I know no more than anyone else on DAZ's plans.

  • Tips to Speed Up Closed Room Iray Render, please

Some of them can...but not 100% sure on a lot of them.  AcuityBrands (Lithonia, AEL and several others) has pretty 'liberal' terms on what you can do with them.  To be on the safe side, I wouldn't but would say exactly which one and provide a link, so it can be individually downloaded.

great suggestion I think that will be the best idea, cheers mjc

The easiest to deal with, as far as a package, is the 'Artist Friendly' package...I put it (and several others) in an IES folder in my Runtime > Textures.  That way it's easily findable and in a central location.

  • Studio to Zbrush tutorials?

I'm thinking about trying the Zbrush trial in the near future and was going to begin looking for tutorials regarding the use of it with DAZ products...and now search doesn't work. If you happen to know of any good tutorials that show things like clothing and figure adjustments, texture application and creation, and exporting of detailed meshes back to Studio, would you kindly consider sharing them? Thank you very much in advance.

I have you tried zBrush Central, there are a lot of free tutorials there and Pixologic the makers of zbrush have a great set of newbie tutorials, all free!

  • Book Covers

Well, now I'm hopping mad. To top it all off, Dad's place is next door to mine but I can't see his back door from the house. When I came back from the bank, I happened to glance at the back as I went by - someone has been trying to break in. Looks like I might have my son spend a night or two over there (he's nineteen). I figure it's kids trying to get the TV or computer - those are the only things of value over there and they're both so old they're not worth anything. I just need his computer for when I do get the certs because he has all of his account info for different things on there.

Ugh. Like you need to deal with all this junk now? If you can, get the computer out of there now. Then make sure you leave the porch lights on. Also, for less than $25 you can get a couple of  battery-operated alarms. Search Amazon (or just go to Home Depot) and search for Travel Alarms. Anything that belts out some loud noise should be enough to scare your random burglar away, and hopefully start the neighborhood dogs barking.

Thanks Mitch - come to think of it, Dad has one of those alarms but only on the front door. I've got an ACE Hardware here in town, I'll see if I can pick one up. If figure it's kids because it looks like they tried to take a screwdriver to the back door but couldn't get it open because of the deadbolt. Still, this is a mobile home we're talking about, because they just damaged the area around the door handle and didn't mess with the deadbolt - that tells me it's most likely kids who aren't the sharpest tools in the shed. When they couldn't get the door open they went over to the central AC unit and stood on it to try to pry a screen off a window. It's been raining the past two days and the mud is thick back there. The bricks holding the A/C unit level started to slide in the mud and the damn unit is tipped - almost went into the mud so I figure a kid got a ride he didn't bargain for. The screen frame is broken but the window is solid. While I was back there the neighbor dogs were barking like crazy - so that's a good thing. The back door leads to the laundry room which has another door before you get into the house itself. I'll wander back over there this evening and make sure that door is locked and maybe I can jam a chair or something. Even if the alarms sound and dogs start barking, I don't trust them not to try to grab something and run plus if they leave a door open my dad's cat might get out and he'll never come back in unless Dad calls him. I'm still trying to find a home for him.

Anyone want a mixed Maine Coon? He's huge! Bright orange tabby. Smart too - because he likes to make jailbreaks - he's an indoor only cat - Dad trained him to go to his room. When we'd come over he'd tell the cat to "go to your room" and the cat would run in there and wouldn't come out until he told him to. lol!

@SickleYield lol yes everyone should learn the functionality of the program before going into serious production on specific subject and a lot videos about that at Zbrush Central and some on you tube, when I started Zbrush there was not Youtube or any video online to learn from not to mention I did not even speak much english but my mistakes teach me well until I crack it lol

  • Looking for specific dystopian themed combination of clothing ...

    Hi!

I'm in need of a specific style of clothing for a project, and can't seem to find exactly what i'm looking for, wondered if anyone might be able to suggest an option, or combination of options :)

In short, i'm looking for a costume that will be used for background characters in a dystopian theme. The characters are mercenaries and such that will popuate the background, similar to what you might see in background of Tatooine, or any other lawless environment, they need to apppropriate, though not dominating the central characters with anything too eye distracting.

A little like Mad Max, though toned down heavily, Water world, Riddick, all the usual suspects!

The theme is dystopian, sci-fi, a little Conan'ish, slight cowboy western themed, the world is littered with useless advance derelict technology, there's a very subtle undertone of dark magic, everyones living on the edge etc .. the typical plot! :)

I'm rendering with Iray, aiming to use Genesis 2/3 where possible.

I've seen most of what's available in this theme, but feel like i must be missing a hidden tomb or something! or maybe just not seeing the right combination of clothes, So much so, i'm tempted to create them myself from scratch! lol

    Thank you in advance!

  • NEW! Novica & Invited Guest Contributors Tips & Product Reviews Pt 6

I've had SoulessEmpathy's Castle Turret on my wishlist for some time, so when I saw it on fast grab the other day, I bought it.  I'm finding it has good 3DL textures and interior lights right out of the box and many spots inside and out for setting scenes. Here are 5 renders that show what I mean.

Scene 1: Inside the central spiral staircase next to the door leading to the roof. The figure is Victoria 6 wearing Fayre for Genesis Female(s) clothing, using textures from Spritely for Fayre and Buenaventura Hair For Genesis 2 Female(s) and Male(s). I did nothing for the lighting - it's what you get when you load the set. The door loads closed, there's a parameter slider to open/close it. I find the steps a bit out of scale as it's a big step for Victoria.

Scene 2: On the roof looking back to the central staircase. I added a cloak from Medieval Cloaks for Genesis 2 Female(s) with a texture from Capable for the Medieval Cloaks. I also added a staff from Enchanted Wings and FirstBastion's skydome. The outdoor lights loaded way too bright, so I had to reduce the sunlight and ambient lights in half to avoid washed out textures.

Scene 3: This is one of the middle floors. Michael 6 with Order of the Wolf armor and Ancient Combat Hair for Genesis 2 Male(s) hair. Sword is short sword from Weapons of War. This is the first time I used Order of the Wolf and it loads the props without the textures so be sure to add them including the second skin for Michael so he's wearing the chain mail.

Scene 4: The same location but with a wide-angle camera at a new position. I like the mix of stone and wooden features on the interior scenes.

Scene 5: This set is not a complete castle, but you can use it for closeup outside scene as there are two ramparts leading to the central turret.

  • November 2015 New User Contest "Materials" (WIP-THREAD)

    First time entering :)

Welcome to the New User's Contest ebonartgallery.

I have added some guide marks to your image.  These are the 4 intersecting points of interest in an image when using the Rule of Thirds.

You might want to try moving the camera slightly so your main figure's head is located closer to the upper left point and perhaps back a bit so his leg is not cut off at the ankle.

You have a great action sequence image.  I have no experience in martial arts but the pose of the main figure looks natural to me...nothing feels off about it.  I am looking forward to seeing what you do with this image.

I rotated it and also repositioned some figures so they didn't interfere overmuch with his body lines. I'm thinking that a slight blurring on the back wall by manipulating depth of focus might also be good - the back wall is detailed and might distract from the central scene in some ways.

I think this format works much better the motion lines are much clearer. the blurring of the background would be usefull but ther is a second option that is motion blurr. You can add that option in yorur advanced render setting (tricky part is about what gets moved will be blurred, so if your guy shoulb be the clear focus of action you need to group verything else and move that, well not the camera, best thing to do with the camera is to parent it to the guy in this case...) I guess I would remove those wooden boxes and put some other junk in there, it look to clean, as well the floor, you could use the griminizer on that or work along the suggestions earlier in this thread. I would mess up those zombies as well they look a bit to washed ;-)

If you want to attempt motion blur ( either on this render or a future project ) there is a very good tutorial in Issue 3 of the DS Creative Magazine on Page 50.
