I love my computer and I hate my computer.  It isn't the best machine in the universe, but I am glad I have it.

    Me too.

Is the thread where I can complain about how hot it is?

Winter is coming, the hotter the computer, the less heating one needs for ones house cheeky

that is why I only render in the winter time to save on the electric bill laugh

At Christmas we huddle around the PC during a render and sing carols, LOL

    No lies detected!

Lemme tell y'all a true story: I have a comparatively new computer (for me, that means less than three years old) that I use for renders. It was bought specifically for renders (I was tired of trying to render on a potato), and I don't do anything on it except renders and composition of my comics. It's very powerful ... and makes a lot of heat. In the winter, of course, it's been kind of lovely; we have radiators in our house and the office doesn't have a radiator, so it's the coldest room, and my feet are right next to the render machine while I work, so that's nice :P

But in the summer ... we also don't have central air conditioning and it's been very hot in Greater Boston this year. We have three window A/C units, one for each bedroom and one for the office. Now, I don't mind working in sweaty conditions so much, but the render machine does. Once the ambient temp in the room crosses much over 75 (F), I know that a long series of hard renders will get the CPU temp in the machine above 75 (C). I don't mind running at 75C but when it pushes toward 80C and stays there, I get worried. So now we have the phenomenon where I work in the office all day long in 75-80F temps and don't mind, but when my day's work is done and I switch to doing renders all night, the A/C gets turned on in the office for the renderer's benefit.

That's right, folks, I treat my computer better than I treat myself.

(To be fair, though, it's also partially for me: As I say, the computer's really good at venting heat, which means if it's doing heavy rendering, in a 75F office, it's probably closer to 85F on my feet and legs.)

  • The [Disco Chives] Misplaced Parrot Complaint Thread

...it looked like a lightly overcast day here though the "clouds" were light orange in  colour instead of white or light grey.  Smoke haze at ground level has become more noticeable since I made a run to the grocery a few hours ago.

    Actual complaint: UPS.

I have a package that was delayed and is now stuck (supposedly) in Spokane WA (yeah where I mentioned there are several wildfires burning that closed the single major highway connection with Seattle and Portland)  It gets pretty wacky so bear with me.

When the package reached the second UPS facility in Pennsylvania was when I received notice it had been delayed.  That was on the 16th (Wednesday)  When I received information on their tracking details page it said it finally left that that location on Thursday the 18th (almost 2 days later)  There was no explanation given at all like bad weather or some other "calamity", just two days of my package going nowhere. (I've never experienced this sort of foul up on a package form this particular vendor and it isn't their fault as it occurred after UPS picked it up..

OK now so where it gets weird.  The departure time form the Illinois facility is shown as 6:17 PM local Central Time with the arrival at 5:47 PM local Pacific Time on the same day (August 18th)? So yes, it did cross two time zones and given the 2 hour differential, that means it would have shipped at 4:17 Pacific time getting to Spokane in only 30 min.  Well both the Concorde and even the SR-71 Blackbird (the latter the fastest plan in the world) have been retired and all are in air museums abut the only way it could have made it in a half hour is if it was sent via hypersonic courier drone My thought is they crewed up on the date and it arrived in Spokane on the 19th (Saturday) though I got that notice on Saturday morning,  about 7 hours before they said it arrived.  Yeah pretty sloppy tracking

Trying to get any additional information on the situation through their site or via phone is absolutely impossible.  You may remember my rants against Xfinity's reception bot.  Well, the one at UPS makes Xfinity's look like a "wet behind the ears" rookie. With Xfinity if you are persistent at pressing "0" it will finally relent.  Try that with the one at UPS, forget it as it will simply hang up on you.  Also the Net site is designed to run you around in circles as well until you get so frustrated you leave. I don't know why they can't more helpful particularly when situations I've been experiencing occur, crikey even the post office is more helpful.  I mean it's not like they are handling sensitive top secret shipments or anything like that..

Most likely it will arrive when I'm gone at the coast and given the issue with package thefts in my building I don't expect to find it when I return.  There is the option to reroute it to a UPS store nearby where it can be kept until I get back but it means paying an extra fee to cover their inept bumbling.  They should let me make that shipping change for free.

  • OT Hurricane Hilary

Category 4 storms are bad but often survivable for well made structures.  Some possible damage, but repairable.  Cat 5 on the otherhand...frown

However, if you're near and low to the ocean, watch out for storm surge, get rugs off the floor, get books & important papers up high, get furniture pushed away from the windows.  When the electricity goes out and you know it's going to stay out (usually easy to tell, by looking out the window at the cows flying by), the first thing to do is declare an "Ice Cream Party".  Wheee...yes   But open your refrigerator and/or freezer only once.  You want to preserve as much cold as possible.  In fact one thing to do is fill up milk cartons or other non breakable containers with water and freeze them before the storm so that their cold thermal mass helps keep the inside of the freezer frozen as long as possible.enlightened

The day after the storm, if the electricity is still out, you can declare a steak party cooked in your BBQ pit or with a hibachi type charcoal stove.  Then after the storm & your steak party, have fun picking up the junk on your lawn.  When yours or your neighbor's shingles get ripped from your roof, be prepared to find lots of roofing nails pointy side up in your lawn.sad  Lawnmowers often show you where they are, just before they imbed themselves in your shin.crying

I went through the eye of hurricane David (Labor Day, 1979), and 5 hurricanes in 2004 (Charlie, Francis, Ivan, Jeanne, and Ivan again) all while living in Melbourne, Florida (central east coast of FL)  a couple of them were cat 3 bordering on cat 4, and we had several tornados during Jeanne, one of which dropped a big liveoak tree on the roof.  My bedroom was in the basement (yes, a Florida house with a basement, who'd a figured?) and when I woke up in the morning I put my feet down into two inches of water.frown  Then went upstairs to find the tree leaning against the house, and water showering down onto the pooltable.crying  Pooltables don't make great pools.indecision

Towels, have lots of towels handy.  Big bath or beach towels.  Be prepared to soak & wring until your arms ache.

I've seen 100 mph winds on one side of the house flattening palm trees, and yet on the otherside's entrance, a small glass chime on the porch wasn't even moving.surprise  Wind is surprising.

I am happy that there are new houses in the Enterables series again. I love them and own all but two.

Yeah, that one is finding it's way to my cart too, but still it does irritate when a creator makes choises that don't make sense.

Especially with such cabins that are usually ruined by a) having the chimney outside the cabin (makes no sense in cold climate), b) "wattle and daub" construction, which may have been common in central/southern europe, but completely unknown up here with abundance of timber

PerttiA, you are partly right about the chimneys. I have looked at all the houses again: That chimneys are completely missing on the multi-storey wooden buildings is of course not correct. One could have suggested some kind of flue - or put cooking places in front of or next to the house. The German Wikipedia writes on the history of the chimney (translated):

"The chimney was developed by the Romans in the form of the hypocaust, but fell into oblivion by the 10th-11th centuries. In the meantime, there were only single-storey, one-room houses (from which, among other things, plank houses developed). The smoke from the cooking place went through the whole house and escaped through openings in the roof. This meant that the whole house was heated, but also that the soot settled in the cooking area ... and in the whole house (including the clothing, lungs and skin of the inhabitants), increasing the risk of fire. ... With the introduction of mezzanine ceilings, there was a need for better smoke evacuation."

As for the half-timbered houses, they are virtually the emblem of historic Central and Western Europe - which is, of course, southern from your home.

Finally found the reason, why the log cabins over on the left side of the pond have the chimney outside the cabin...

The log cabin was introduced by the early Finnish and Swedish settlers, which had long traditions in building them.
It was the Irish Scots that had no such tradition that went and moved the chimney.

    NIVIDIA is wise.wink

They realize the power of entrenched habits and that people by and large will not leave the comfort bubbles of their preferred content eco systems.

I have learned this over the past two years of trying to get the larger blender community to try Diffeo or even the Reallusion Blender pipeline addon.
People see one of my animations and ask about the workflow.
The moment you mention you used a  Daz or Iclone character, the conversation is over..Entrenched habits.frown

This is why USD will likely prevail as it does not ask people to Buy into or learn another Character animation, simulation or VFX software but can still send their content output it to a central Hub for collaboration and of course rendering.

  • What makes the rendered Daz human images still distinguishable from the photos of real human?

I'm guessing if it's being shown somewhere related to 3D rendering, or at DAZ, like in a gallery or post, I already know it's a DAZ rendered virtual person, so then other things instantly become apparent... but I'm probably less likely to notice (a really well done render)  if it's just a cold viewing of a random image being used in an advertisement or a book cover...

There are all the dead giveaways people have mentioned beforehand, like hair, slightly unnatural posing, too perfect, etc... but when someone does good postwork, it bridges that uncanny valley... but nowadays most times it's usually context... I'm expecting it being CGI so I look for telltale signs.

For example I recently started noticing a lot of clickbait ads that used to use real (human) buxom young females that have nothing to do with the subject (like ads titled "The Government is GIVING AWAY FREE solar panels NOW!" or "What your DOCTOR doesn't want you to know about SQUID JUICE!", but for some reason it's a thumbnail of a busty young lady in a tight T-shirt in a random location like a courtroom or next to an industrial air conditioner)... these ads which generally used to use actual people are starting to use AI generated images that seem to be cobbled together out of real images and CGI...

Now that I'm aware I tend to notice it more... it originally started with badly made images of houses with wavy distorted solar panels on the roofs and some odd car or landscape images, which were so bad you couldn't not notice, but now its people too... and even though they are a lot better than the old ads, it's stuff like not showing hands or oddly blurred hair that are the telltales.

I suspect if you hate clickbait you ignore it, but if one is easily distracted by extremely round objects tightly confined by cotton fabric, they are more likely to be distracted by the virtual representations of temperature activated central surface irregularities and miss it... and probably click on the ad hoping for more revelations of such irregularities... possibly even going as far as to purchase a gallon of refined squid juice infused with magnetic silver ions, in hopes that one may attract similar geometric anomalies to their vicinity.

Rats... I forgot what I was going on about because now I want to go out and buy cantaloupes and honeydew melons for some reason...

Whatever... it's often context that makes me notice unreality, otherwise it's easy to gloss over if one isn't overly invested in the image or examining it too closely.

Well... it's off to the melonery... melon-o-porium... place with melons... Supermarket!... Wow, why was that so hard to remember the name for?

  • Nightmares in Ventura

Thanks for the help to everyone. I have been using DS for years and remain a total dimwit regarding the vast majority of things available to anyone who uses it. I decided ages back to to move my content to an external drive and now use that exclusively, its linked to DS via the content directy manager and works fimne and suits me because I can organise and now can find stuff without too much trouble.

THis does mean that I dont use DIM, because of my lack of knowledge I have no idea where stuff goes when its installed through DIM. I always install content manually into my external Daz library. Ages ago I installed Daz Central which again I didnt really use because it was too slow for my limited patience. However it did allow me to get a copy of DS very quickly and easily, once I had remebered how to use DC, its not exactly something i use very often. the last time has to be a couple of years ago.

I have always updated my system whenever Apple release a new version of the OS so when I discovered Ventura was being made available in upgraded from the old OS and once I did so chaos ensued. When I opened it up loads of my files had vanished and my copy of DS was severely affected. I dont know how this happened, not anything to do with DS, yet another Apple disaster, which makes me wonder why i contnue t use it. Anyway, I recovered my missing files by using my Time machine back up which is on an externeal drive, and now I have DS back to almost as it was before the problems happened. Everythibg else seems ok, but I will only be sure things are really ok with use.

So to summarise, things are getting back to normal and I would like to thank everyone who offered advice for their time and trouble...

  • Nightmares in Ventura

Hi. I have been using DS for some years now, mostly for my own entertainment snd suffering from the problems caused by my devoton to Apple Macs. I know features like filament for instance re not open to Mac users, or it wasnt last time I checked, but thats not the thing I need help with.

Apple have just released the new operating system called Ventura, which i installed and I have found it a horror story. The effect on my Daz studio has been catastrophic. The version I am running is 4.21.0.5 which has to be out of date. When I opened it up after installing Ventura the interface had changed a lot, as an example the tabs group seems to have lost some options, there is no tab  for contents for instance, is this the result of installing Ventura or someother reason.

I would like to install the latest version of Daz but cant seem to find it and I have forgotten how to install it anyway, I dont have DIM or the other content management thing Daz central, could do with some help plese...

I know this is probably not the most helpful but I have the same problem and if I enter the password over and over fast enough it will eventually log me into DIM, I still can't get Daz Central to work. I've tried troubleshooting in other forums but nothing else seems to work.

For anyone having this similar problem, check if you are using a VPN. I had this problem for weeks, found that turning off the VPN fixed it. I know this is three years old, but apparently still relevant.

  • Transfer Daz to a new computer?

Well, there are a few ways. You could just install from scratch on the new machine and download everything again - that's not very efficient tho.

An alternative way is to copy everything across if you have a way to do that - either external drive or via networking.

The steps below are assuming you are using DIM (Daz Install Manager). They might also work if you are Daz Central. However, please ignore this post if you use Daz Connect - i.e. if you log into your account within Daz Studio since it probably won't work.

    1. Go into Content DB Maintenance via the top-right corner menu of the Smart Content, select export metadata and click apply - this backs up any changes you have made to Smart Content (metadata)
    2. Copy the entire Library base folder to the new computer
    3. Copy any additional base libraries you may have to the new computer ("Render Library", "My Library", "Third Party Content" etc)
    4. Copy your DIM manifest files to a similar location on the new computer. If you do not know where these live, check the advanced settings within DIM for the path.
    5. Copy your DIM downloaded packages to a similar location on the new computer.
    6. Configure DIM on the new computer - set the base folder to the newly copied location and also set the appropriate manifest and download locations.
    7. Restart DIM to make sure it has found all the installed files you are expecting
    8. Open Daz Studio on the new machine and within the Content Library panel add the base folder to both "Daz Studio Formats" and "Poser Formats" (for older products)
    9. Add any additional base libraries from step 2
    10. Expand the base library/libraries within Content Library to ensure you see the copied products shown.
    11. Under the top-right corner menu in the Smart Content panel go to Content DB Maintenance again. This time pick re-import metadata and process metadata queue and click apply. This will then show you a long list of all your installed products with the box next to them checked. Click Apply. This will now recreate all you Smart Content from the XML files in runtime/support.
    12. Make a cup of tea - depending on how many products you own the above process will take a while (10, 20 or maybe 30 minutes).

  • Well, I think I accidentally broke Daz Central

That sounds as if you chnaged the base path used by Daz Central, and in the process chnaged the location for content, the database, and so on. If you were previously using C:/Users/(My name)/Documents/DAZ 3D/ Studio/My Library that sounds as if you were using the defaults from Install manager, rather than Daz Central, anyway - if so, open Install Manager and click the gear icon to get to its advanced settings, then right-click should enable you to reset its paths to defaults.

  • Well, I think I accidentally broke Daz Central
There is an option in the upper right corner to change the download location for assets. I wanted to change that to a secondary drive, so I did. I didn't take notes of where it was previously, but based on the location of previously downloaded assets, it's somewhere in the neighborhood of "C:/Users/(My name)/Documents/DAZ 3D/ Studio/My Library. I downloaded one thing to see if it worked. Well, it went into the folder I prepared for it, but when I tried to open it in Daz Studio, there were files missing. It had me download it through Daz Studio, which installed it to the C drive. It's like Studio was expecting it to be on my C drive, not my Secondary. I no longer think this will work and I want to change it back. In Central, looking at my assets no longer tells me which ones I already have installed. It gives me the option to install it, even the ones I know are already installed.

I would imagine that the main reason is that zip is "good enough" and so there is no need to change.

There is absolutely no way Daz is going to re-package ~45k product archives (probably WAY more than that since some products have multiple zip files) and switching to 7z format would mean that DIM, Central and (possibly) Connect would all have to be updated to support both extraction methods.  Even so, this would not solve your main issue seeing as all the old ones would still be in zip format.

Not to mention that Windows has native Zip support, which makes it easier for the Average Joe.
