  • When was your first Daz purchase?

First DS version 1.2 - not in order history ...

First freebie: The Old Shoe House April 2006

First spending money: Jenna for A3 March 2007 in March Madness for $1.60 - those were Mad prices! LOL
Bought her even before I had the A3 morphs and maps - but there was the free V3, M3, A3 and H3 package at ... CNET? something like that.
It was legal, that I do remember, because I don't do pirating ... and I used Morph Manager to copy H3 morphs and empty morph channels to A3 (still have that A3Hiromorphs.cr2 in my runtimes - LOL).

  • When was your first Daz purchase?

I downloaded Byce, Daz and a few freebies in April 2012 but I really began to play with it at the end of that year. My first purchase was a PC membership on January 1st, 2013 but the first real items I bought were the Genesis Evolution Morph Bundle and hair (Sandy Hair, K-Nicky, Classic Rolled hair).

  • Windows 10 auto upgrade.

..well I have to for content Installs and uploading images but that is it.

I download on a Win7 computer with some serious protection on it. (It was that one that updated without permission. Apparently the best malware won't protect me from Microsquiff. Go figure.) Once my downloads have passed through that, they're safe to transfer to my art PC.

...not an option for me as my only other system is XP32.  I have a very beefy firewall on the Win 7 workstation.

Can't afford a "go between" system, crikey, I can't even afford  the 7 Pro OEM I need so I can upgrade the workstation's memory.

  • Anyone buy any of those new Jepe products like Special Z

Hi Jepe....if you read this. I ended up buying all of your special effects. I knew I should have bought the bundle, but at the time I only could find 2 new releases that I wanted and you had to buy three to get all the discounts. Later I discovered there WAS another product that I did indeed want, so I COULD have bought the bundle. Anyway, I made the following picture using some of your special effects. And I also have a question...how to you use the special effects so the figure is in the middle but he is not entirely faded by the fog so to speak. Like there are effects all around him but parts of him are not partially obsurced by the fog. Like the fog (or effect) is has holes in it. I think you can do this, as you had that promo picture where the guy is behind the flood lights but the top half of his clear. Hope I explained this in a way that you understand what I am asking.

In this picture I had an effect behind him and one in front of him. There was a morph to bend the front effect back, so that's I did he wasn't all hazy.

I'm not sure what you wanted to achieve, to be honest. But if it was to get such an effect that he stands in the middle of fog with his upper body is not covered, you need a little strategic placement of the effects. Remember that that camera doesn't see everything. Especially in your case when you only have a torso shot, move the effect planes up or down and scale them. But you need effects without a sharp border. Some of the effects are meant to be back- or foregrounds with sharp cut edges, most effects are within the edges of the plane and fade to the edges. Such effects you need for this kind of scene, from the left, from the right, from above, in front or beneath.

And in Iray, please use the adjustment presets to get the effects stronger, that needs a bit of switching between Textured Preview and Iray Preview to not overdo them though.

Here's the first scene I made with SteamZ and how it actually looks in DAZ Studio viewport.

  • Shaping Genesis To Victoria 4 Problem

My guess is that the item has an existing morph named Victoria 4 for some reason, and that's overriding the autofollow-generated morph.  Are you seeing this consistently with different V4 clothing items autofitted to Genesis?

  • Basic Shader: How does one turn-off HD to apply a basic shader to any character...

Ah, you need to find the HD morph in Parameters or shaping (look in the Curerntly Used group) and set it to zero. HD morphs slow down the pre-calculation step of the SSS shaders, so if you are too far away to see the HD details it's worth removing them. You can also apply a shader that doesn't used SSS (or switch the SSS off in the Surfaces pane) but that will markedly chaneg the appearance of the figure - check to see if there are non SSS material settings included, though, as they should give a close to intended look.

OK, another thing to check is that the problem set doesn't already have a V4 morph - though since it follows the SuperSuit that seems unlikely. In the parametrs pane option menu (the lned button in the top corner, or right-click the tab) enable Show Hidden Parameters, then cliock on the All group on the left and type Victo in the filter box - is there a Victoria 4 morph? If theer is, does it do anything?

  • When was your first Daz purchase?

Somewhat of a latecomer here. By which I mean *here*. I did purchase Bryce when it was in Beta, from the developers at MacWorld. That was in something like '91 or '92. Also purchased Poser when it was first released. (Had a lot of MetaCreation's stuff back in the day). But the fact is that I never did anything with any of it.

More than a decade later I wandered in here in late July 2009. Saw that here was where Bryce had fetched up, and paid for the upgrade from something like v. 3 to v.5 or 6. That was August 8. Then saw that Studio was a free download and bought that. That actually took, but then I bought that one with a project in mind.

I think the first content I bought was a morph pack for the kids (and probably the kids too, but they are no longer on the last page of my product library and I'm not going to go hunting them) and Noggin's Poser Owl, and it's morph pack.

  • Gett lot's of errors when loading an item

But if I want to buy items for Victoria 4.2 etc...  Then I need her right?

If i look at some of the items,  they state that Victoria 4 is required.

That depends...if it is a morph, then most likely, altough morphs can be transfered to Genesis and Genesis 2 with the proper add-ons.  If it's clothing...then it can be transferred (with varying degrees of success/fidelity) to Genesis/Genesis2 with the included functions of Studio.  If it is textures/skins, then Genesis can use them right out of the box.

  • A3 Child Morph?
@Leana Unfortunately, for the project I'm working on, I really need a figure with a much more anime-esque appearance, particularly the eyes and face need to be anime style. But thank you. ~* Phoenix DeFalco *~

There are various anime-ish morphs available for Genesis that would be combined with the basic child morph (Hitomi comes to mind, but she's not free).

Since you're looking for anime figures Kururu for G2F and G3F might be useful to you:

Let me know if you need more screen shots. I'm working on the assumption that you are probably more skilled at making morphs than I am, and using Morph Loader pro. wink

In 3DC, import as per pixel painintg, and use the tools in the tweak room to move your verts. Here is my very unattractive result, heh.

  • Seeking tutorials using 3D Coat w/ DAZ products

OK, I just tried to make a Genesis3 morph and it worked just fine. Screen shots attached. I think the issues in the first thread I linked had to do with making clothing fits, and there was something about having the reference mesh in addition to the clothing that made one or the other of the programs unhappy. As making clothing is really low on my list of things to do right now, I wouldn't even begin to know how to troubleshoot that. It you want to morph figures though, no issues.

Note on the DS export screen, I had the To: set at Daz Studio scale, 1 unit = 1cm

    HI Wendy :)

thanks for that info,. Nice to know you can attach multiple meshes to the same rig,.

I still like the method of duplicating the bones and attaching to clothing to make conforming clothing using Fit to,. that's cool to.

    Thanks Dart :)

all done without any additional morph packs :)

...so was the thought of ever being able to transfer G2F skins to G3F until one enterprising PA at another store came up with a brilliant out of the box idea. So maybe there is a fix, but the means just haven't been discovered yet.

Were all Daz content and plugins encrypted, none of this would have been possible.

Actually the idea of using geografts for this was in the very first threads about G3F (from Richard maybe ?) it just took so long to implement :) And as it's geografts it will work even if G3F is encrypted.

Fixing 3DL shaders (and they are in cameras too) is difficult because they're distributed in compiled form and that can be seen as another form of encryption :)

  • You've been heard. Response re: 4.9 and Encryption

I'm interested do you use DAZ Studio to make a living, what the main purpose or is it just a hobby?

I started DS as a way to have poseable figures for drawing (free Photoshop plugin really helps with this too) for character and outfit design concept art. Then I found out how accessible 3D content creation is these days, so now I use Blender to make the outfits using edited Daz figures as mannequins (bought the G3 mannequin SO fast the other week.) So I would say I use the main figures, the big morph packs, and a lot of Iray shaders.

The other 95% of my library is just "Ooh that's cool! Ooh that's cute! Ooh maybe one day I'll use this thing for a thing!" fun purchases.

Some sort of detailed PA market research questionnaire would be cool. Obviously not everyone can get the thing they want made but it'd be interesting if there was some sort of way that everyone could see a neatly collated view of what everyone wants to buy.

  • You've been heard. Response re: 4.9 and Encryption

..David GB brings up a very valid point.

For example, in the 4.7 Update there was a change to the shader mixer that crippled the AoA effects cameras and Advanced Lights. For me these were tools I heavily depended on, due to the lighter render load compared with UE. It really put a crimp in my work as Iray was still an update away. Basically, what occurred was all of the Graphic Art cameras were broken, two of the Atmospheric Cameras were broken, and Flagging surfaces with SSS shaders when using the Advanced Lights no lonmger worked.

Just last week through the graces of one person here, scripts were released that fixed the Graphic Art Cameras and one of the effects of the Atmospheric Cameras (waiting on a script for the other). The issue with the Advanced Lights SSS flagging is unfortunately more complex, however, so was the thought of ever being able to transfer G2F skins to G3F until one enterprising PA at another store came up with a brilliant out of the box idea. So maybe there is a fix, but the means just haven't been discovered yet.

Were all Daz content and plugins encrypted, none of this would have been possible.

  • You've been heard. Response re: 4.9 and Encryption

Sorry for a non-sequitur. Spending the limited time I am up to using the computer trying to actually do some stuff so not following the forums. Dropped in only because of confusion at seeing the free Toll Booth I'd 'bought' this morning before realising my mistake when I noticed it was encrypted/Connect only after purchase suddenly turn up in DIM. See there's been a change of heart and/or wire-uncrossing; upset my +1 this morning might be seen as support for Connect/Encryption. Nothing has changed here, nothing will change here, i will not buy encrypted content, I will not install a DS that supports encryptioon of content and DRM. Ever.

Search on 'toll booth' brought me to this thread. Have only read first page and last. Cannot read more. But having read the first post in the thread I just want to say something in reply, even though it is very belated, and even though I'm sure no-one of inportance at DAZ will read it, or take any note even if they do.

From the first post in this thread by DAZ_Steve:

Obviously this does not address some of the other issues such as scripts and tools that work on un-encrypted content. But those are solved in other ways. We are working (and will continue to work) with developers who have this need, in order to show them how to do it with encrypted content.

And this helps a user who is not a 'developer' but very frequently has DS .duf and data .dsf files (and Poser cr2 and pp2 and pz2 files) open in a text editor for assorted reasons exactly how? In the last week I've found, understood and fixed bugs in two separate DAZ store products I've bought, as well as adding functionality to a couple more, modifed three others, and I have three .dsf files opened in tabs in TextPad right now i'll be getting back to after I've post this?

I have been opening, studying, bug fixing, expanding and modifying my 3D content files since I started in 2004, originally Poser, now the duf/dsf format too. It is an integral part of my work flow, and taking it away removes about nine-tenths of the use I have for the content I buy (which is very, very, very rarely to use 'as is out of the can' ... or out of the zip file, rather - I don't shop going 'ooh, that's nice, I want to do a render with that'; I start with pictures - more accurately a film - in my head with no regard to my content library, and shop going ''ho hum - if I buy that, I can take that bit of it, alter it like that, mix it with that converted from that, transfer the whatsit from that into the mix and finally have that thing I need for that'). And basically taking away nine-tenths of the flexibility and use for products makes them not worth buying. And that's not even counting all the bugs I find in the content from the store - DAZ Own and PA alike - which i need fixed pronto, and get fixed pronto by the simple expedient of locating the bug and fixing it myself. And believe me in the 12 years I've been a customer here that's the only way i've found of getting bugs fixed pronto - I mostly gave up on DAZ customer support or contacting PAs a long time ago after endless bad experiences - and there are more than a few products still in the store, still with bugs in them after YEARS even though I didn't just do the normal 'hey there's something not quite right aabout product X' but submitted a detailed explanation of EXACTLY what the bug was, instructions for how to see it, line references to the bug in the product's data files and an exact description of what the syntax/forumula/whatever mistake is and what correction fixes it.

No. When I hit bugs in content, I need them fixed straight away, which I can do myself WHEN THE FILE ISN'T ENCRYPTED. The very best content bug fix I've had from DAZ was 48 hours, which was 47 hours too long for the need. And that was the exception. Usually it was weeks or months, or - frequently - never.

I need unecypted files I can process in a text editor for much of the use I make of the products for renders. And I need them for finding and fixing bugs. In theory some of what i do in a text editor can be done in the DS interface, in practice not so much. The last DAZ store content bug I found and fixed, as usual I first relaised there was a problem from what i was seeing in the viewport, but as an experiment and not like usual I tired to figure out exactly what the fault was and fix it within DS. After 15 minutes I still only knew vaguely where the fault was and was in too much pain to go on. When the pain subsided and I went back to it i loaded a handful of the products data .dsf files into my text editor in tabs, flipped between them, and saw the fault, fixed it and saved the edited file in a total of less than 90 seconds. The DS interface is fine for somethings but really sucks for others, especially allowing comaprisons of things that immediately show certain classes of bug all too common ins tore products (especially fauly formulae in a few out of a lot of morph files in a product of a lot of morphs). And there are other things one simply can't do in teh DS interface (at least without being able to write complex scripts, which I can't). For one thign i was doinf, I've needed to look at the actual UV coordinates of two different items side-by-side, identify corresponding points despite the fact that they did not share vertex-identical meshes, and copy coordinates from one to the other; on another occasion, put up two morph dsfs and delete all morph delta lines for vertices appearing in one from the other to create a new version of the second morph that's had a sepecific part of its influence removed. There is no way to carry out either operation in DS.

So, I am one of the customers you are abandoning. i won't buy DRMeed content on principal; but even leaving that aside, I WILL NOT BUY ENCRYPTED CONTENT. EVERY render I set out to do, i end up opening dsf files in a text editor as part of the process to manipulate the content from what it starts pout as into what I need. And at least once a week I end up opening dsf and/or duf files in a text editor as part of tracing and fixing a bug I've just run headlong into and need fixing righ then (or a workaround at leastm which i can often find looking at the dsf if i can;t fix it), not next week, next month, nexxt year, never.

If you wish to keep me as a customer at least for now, then:

1 Provide a store option to exclude encrypted content from the view.

2 Will you PLEASE on the product page change the silly Compatible Software listing to the MINIMUM version of the software needed by the product. When you released 4.9 it was just stupid that every DS product had the Compatible Software listing go to 4.9 when most of it hadn't changed and still worked in 4.8, or 4.6, or 4.0, or DS 3 or in some cases even DS 2. I WILL NOT INSTALL A DS VERSION THAT CONTAINS A DRM AND/OR CONTENT ENCYPTION FUNCTION.  Ever. If that means staying on 4.8 until I die  (which isn't likely to be that many years) or until I find Poser an attractive proposition again, or until some new competitor arises I fancy changing too, so be it, While you still have products in the store that still work in DS 4.8, do you really not want me and people like me who stay with 4.8 to NOT buy 4.8 compatible content? What sense is that for your balance sheet? Just for heavens sake label your products with MINIMUM DS required versions (or '4.9+ Only' for everything that won't work in 4.8 at least).

Of course, although I've bought every Genesis 3 product I thought might help, and have repeatedly run extensive comparison tests of Genesis 3 against Genesis 2, re-running after each new thing came out for Genesis 3 that I thought might make a difference, I think everything is out now that might help and I've reached the final definitive conclusion that on the factors that matter to ME  (compatibility with 'industry standard' UV systems or weight-mapping systems or whatever don't matter to me in the slightest as I don't have a 'pipeline' to other software other than Poser and Hexagon) Genesis 2 beats Genesis 3 quite soundly on 3 out of the 4 factors I judge the usability of the figures on (or 4 out of 5, depending on whether I count two as separate or part of the same uber-factor). And frankly your dropping of Triax for General weight mapping really sucks (Did you know that while many PAs didn't manage to rig Genesis 2 trousers/pants for a good full box-splits sdie-to-side on the thighs without hideous texture distortion, SOME did manage it with Triax, as have I fixing up some that didn't; but with the Genesis 3 General weight-mapping I don't have a SINGLE pair of trousers that can do that bend without hideous results, including some items from PAs who managed fine with their Genesis 2 version but just couldn't on the Genesis 3?). So I won't be buying much future Genesis 3 stuff unless it's something I really want to convert to (and think will easily convert to) Genesis 2. So whole swathes of your new releases don't aappeal to me anyway. But there's still older store content and SOME (non-Genesis 3) new stuff I'll buy IF YOU JUST MAKE IT EASY FOR PEOPLE LIKE ME IN THE STORE to know what is encrypted, what isn't, what needs a DS 4.9 (or later in future) and what doesn't.

So to the thread title: bottom line - No, I don't think I've been heard, Or I've been ignored.

(N.B. Please nobody reply expecting a conversation with me. The simple act of concentrating and typing a post causes sufficient increased pain and mental fog that afterwards I will be laid up entirely incapable of typing or focusing enough to read and understand a post or email for several days (which is the state I'm in most of the time). And the meds fog my memory badly - by the time I'm up to reading and/or typing again I'll have forgotten all about this thread and that I've made a post in it. I am no longer able to follow the forums, and mostly do not.)
