Genesis Generation ID
Not I know. You can check a morph you know only one genesis have, in shape panel. Or me I use the smartcontent panel, with the context checked, to see what figure/shape it will show when I select one of my characters.
Will's WIP threadYeah, the base resolution thing messed me up a few times. The other thing was that when I imported into Blender I didn't know I was supposed to tell it to keep vertices. I didn't even know what that meant. It wasn't until I watched Sickleyield's morph tutorial from DS to Blender and back that I realized what I was doing wrong or, in this case, not doing right. The default import for Blender keeps vertices separate. Every time I tried to make a morph, I was moving body parts and couldn't figure out how to keep them all together and then DS would have a hissy fit and spit errors at me.
At least now, I know what to do and I learned how to create a preset in Blender so I just have to click a preset. Thanks, @Sickleyield! :)
Yay! :)
Genesis 3 or Genesis 4?If you invest in G3, or not, is ultimately an answer just you can answer to yourself. Here's a few thoughts, though.
When I started out, everything was G2. In my naivity, and non understanding of all the generational issues, I also began buying stuff that was made for other generations, and learened the hard way about compatibility. There's a monetary "Ouch" factor involved in this, on top of lots of frustrations. Enter Iray into a previously 3Delight world as well...
On the bright side of things, this has taught me a lot about fitting things between generations, pose-mayham and other issues. I now have a pretty wide base of "older" stuff, and so far, everything plays nice together. My M4/V4 can share a scene with G2, the G1 creatures and figures also fit in well. They all can exchange materials and poses between them, with minor fixes (except for shoes).
Then came G3, which broke compatibility on lots of grounds. This meant I had to rebuy a lot of things, and start from scratch with a lot of things, that my accumulated previous generations already had. Where you needed a minor foot adjustment when using a G1 pose on G2, you now needed a full fledged converter to transfer a G2 pose to G3. Skins can't be used at all; it's not just a simple UV add on, but you need extra geometry if you want to "trade" between the generations.
I had to decide if I wanted to make that investment, or not. Various factors, outside of the purely financial ones, came into play. My project, begun before G3 hit the market, consists mostly of G2 characters. Transferring the morphs would be no problem (thanks to GenX), but everything else is bothersome. Also, I'm not a huge fan of G3; they look like a case of too much botox to me (even with the PAs really creating otherwise beautiful characters!).
The result was, that I - more or less - skipped G3. There are notable exceptions, like George, and a handful of other characters, and the occasional other product. Most of my G3 clothing, hair and poses is from the Platinum club. But other G3 new releases, I usually skip. Of course, I miss that there isn't much content released for G2, or the other, older generations. but as most others are investing heavily into G3, of course, the vendors produce for G3 rather than the older generations. They want to get a proper paycheck for their hard work at the end of the day, which I can understand. But at the end of the day, there's a lot less content "available" for me to purchase.
So... what does that mean for you? Two things: If you love G3, then, by all means, invest in it. It is you who needs to like the figure, and its your artwork they are in. When G4 will arrive (and no one does at the moment when that will be), there's every chance that you'll experience the same as I, and that you just don't like G4. Maybe G4 will break compatibility again, and you will be forced to invest even more, and find that you can't.
The second thing is, if money is an issue, don't discard the "old" generations. Financial-wise, as the older stuff shows up a lot in sales, it's worth a thought or two as well.
I hope these thoughts were useful; whatever you decide, I wish to you happy renderings!

Agreed, I've even bought a fair few V4 and G1 items; they are at a much lower price, and those I've bought I've had a plan on how to use - otherwise I wouldn't have.
Content only becomes obsolete if you let it; it's you're cash, you decide how much value it gives you. Repeated uses makes any item you bought better value. :)
Daz character with morphs (FBX) to Maya for animatingHi
You can filter what morphs to export out from Daz Studio under "edit morph export rules" when exporting fbx.. this will help in reducing the amount of morphs.. I normally restrict it to either head.xxx or genesis3male.xxx to limit them (see attached)
Now, if your plan is to bring in that fbx back into Daz studio, to save the pose as a .duf or render.. you might have some issues.. there are some serious quirks in the fbx importer that you need to be aware of.
1.- body animation done in motionbuilder (and perhaps Maya, don't know as I don't have it), comes back in when imported as fbx as separate skeletons for items such as clothing, etc..(with each being in different positions) making it impossible to render out just like that.. if you save the animation as a pose, it is ok, as it only saves the animation from the genesis3 skeleton
2.- pose files for facial animation, have to be saved using the "shaping" preset or "properties" preset (shaping saves morph animation, properties both morph, body animation and materials), but.. you have to edit the saved .duf file for it to work. I found out that the fbx exporter writes out the morphs for example as #head__eCTRLSurprised, which works fine in Maya and MB, and when brought back in, keeps that naming convention, however, Daz Studio looks for #eCTRLSurprised, so you have to do a mass replace in something like wordpad to correct it. I can give more details if interested.
I agree with Jaebae, the bone rigging gives a lot more options, and you can use a combination of the two to achieve really realistic animation.(as you can really use the bones to extend the range of movement that morphs might not give)
Dracorn's Render ThreadThanks. I see some shadows coming from the headpiece on her jawline and forehead that I need to get rid of. It's coming from my fill light, so I have to turn off those shadows.
The headpiece is an expansion - Wynterlove which I picked up on Rendo (there are several of these and they are very pretty). I'm not really into dreads hairstyles but I love the headpieces. It's not a separate piece from Wynter Hair, so I would have to load two hairstyles to use it with another and make Wynter invisible. Have to try that.
The character is Tamara for Monique 6. I like her. However, I didn't invest in Monique 6. I created my own head morph that resembles Monique which the Tamara is laid on top of. It's a dial spinner's solution, but I don't get Monique's really nice skin. There have been too many other things I have wanted to buy.
Question about DSON Importer for PoserInstall manager installs all my files usually :/
You can tell Install Manager where to put your files - just set it to install to the Smith Micro/Poser #/ folder. Click the gear icon at top-right, go to the Installation tab, and click the + to add a new directory.
Hey Richard, will the DIM use my external runtimes, ALL on a different HD than the programs? We've talked about the ability DS has to find stuff in a less strict heirarchy of folders and data types than Poser has to adhere to. And how I have every one of my Runtimes (over 3 dozen) set up now with Content, DATA, ReadMe's and Runtime in the first subfolder under the Runtime folders name. It works. I am still installing all content manually, first to temp "install" folders under ARCS on F, do the housekeeping/sorting of files, names and folders, then move the lot over to its permanent home Runtime on D. DAZ made it a LOT easier to get this done when they started using zips instead of executable installers. Yaknow, I can keep doing it manually. I know where everything is going this way. :)
Yes, you can set up multiple directories - as far as content is concerned it's having the right base directory that matters, whether we are talking about Poser or DS content. In DIM you set which directory to use using the drop down box that appers when the details checkbox is on.
Question for Those Who Know, about DSON. I "get" the DATA folder, it replaces both the Geometries folder and all those morph Deltas folders/files. All that information still exists, but inside the DATA folder. OK. So then what is this other one that automagically appears inside the Runtime folder itself? Inside that is a folder named auto-adapted which I did NOT create. inside that one are content_files and data. GRRRR! I did NOT create those!!!! WHY is this there? What are all those "Windows Mumbo Jumbo" file name folders inside content_files? Did DSON itself MOVE those files to this location? What's going on? This is a very confusing mess folks!
Those are, I believe, the intermediate files created in covnerting from DSON to Poser (which is why theya re in the Runtime folder, not in Data).
Get Your Encrypted Daz Connect Content Here Thread - none at the moment 2018-01-30yes actually it does stop you using it in Carrara my preferred software
even though Genesis 3 is not supported anyway I cannot use autofitted Genesis 3 encrypted stuff on earlier figures that do work either, it messes up the UV mapping (which is obviously encrypted too) and paths, best I can do is export an obj creating a uv and reimport then fit that with the transfer utility. That loses all the morphs, the encrypted morphs!
Get Your Encrypted Daz Connect Content Here Thread - none at the moment 2018-01-30I'm very inclined to believe the theory before; they've confirmed to everyone that encrypted stuff WILL transfer to normal after one year, so now they are doing a good test to see how that affects willingness to accept DRM.
Given they have good sales figures for Genesis 3 content generally, it seems about as decent a test as you can set up.

Reptilian 6, Minotaur 6 and GenXNo transfer at all.
More precisely, any other morphs dialed (if any) are transfered, but the base shape is not.
Question about DSON Importer for PoserHelp. AGAIN. MOST of the DAZ Figure *DATA* have simply vanished suddenly, leaving me with only the most basic DAZ Figures in the way of Genesis and higher, male and female. Oh the folders have the png icons and cr2's but without all those geometry and morph bits from DATA, they got less than doodly squat for any character or dial. Sooo why leave this here in the DSON thread? My guestimations as a troubleshooter leave me with one place to start. I use Poser Pro 7 occasionally, just to check the odd thing or two. I run Poser Pro 2014 and Poser Pro 11, either or both, just about daily. I also use the Gen 4 Figures a LOT, right alongside the Gen 6 (Genesis 2) ones. So, I update to the latest version of Poser Pro 11, then note that I cannot create a new character using the base G2F. One thing leads to another and I find that nearly ALL of the DATA has vanished. And the only clue I think I have is that DSON has one folder for its designated Writable Folder for PP 11 and a different one for PP 2014. I ain't saying that IS the problem. Just could be it or a part of it. And when I say vanished, I mean the missing DATA is NOT anywhere in drive D where it should be. *NO* content information of ANY kind should ever be anywhere on my system/boot drive. E V E R . OK DAZ? S-M too. And I haven't found any missing data on drive F, the system drive, either anyway. I am just riled and rankled a bit about this. Hopefully reinstalling ALL those characters and morphs and Figures will fix it. ALL of that should be located exclusively within the Runtime on Drive D: named \3D Work DAZ People. Which means the DATA folder used to have a LOT of stuff for all the genesis, genesis 2 m/f, and even genesis 3 m/f. Gone. But for a few basic items DATA is dang near empty now.
All CONTENT is on the content drive D. All the programs are installed on the system drive, F. I do not mix them up. Currently I am asking questions in here and I am reinstalling ALL my genesis and genesis 2 characters. Likely clothes and accessories will have to follow as well. Seems something is messing with DATA. And messing wrongfully.
Any help on this????
TIA!
McG.

Stereotypical Japanese Twintail hairstylehttp://www.daz3d.com/sunny-s-tails-for-genesis-3-female-s-genesis-2-female-s-and-victoria-4
This one, although they are a little low, but morphs would move them up. Not ideally as the was the hair is made, but it might work
EDIT
Did these morphs, all three are basically the same, with each one morphing more; the third might be most suitable, but not great; I haven't the time to spend tweaking the cloth; and the hair around the ears - which morph 2 and 3 move, is odd.
Morphs for G2 and G3, never attempted for V4.

I'll leave it up for a couple of days, if more interest I could upload to Deviant Art.
Seem to recall Pretty3D having something for sale recently, that might be close.
Blender Bridge script please? When exporting from blender; make sure only the item you want to return is selected, then options as image, which are mostly default.
In morph loader, change the scale to 10000%, presuming you exported as 1%.
Change property group from Morph/Morph Loader if required
RULES FOR FREEBIE CONTEST AS OF JAN 1ST 2017 Change in Rules Plz Read!We changed rules quite regularly in the old freebie challenge. The only rule Music changed right at the beginning was to allow Poser users and Bryce users to take part. The very first Challenge was that nothing but free stuff was used. even the program used was free, so it was DS only. Daz relelasing Bryce 5 as a free program and Poser (owner number whoever it was at the time) also relelased some form of free version whci gave him the chance to spread the fun.
It was only when Daz put the price back on to the base figures that rules about those had to change. Morph packages were always a paid item, that was changed to No Count when the CVs took over.
I do have a link to the old rules, posted May 2012. obviously no link to the older challenges or the older rules works, as they are on the old Archived site which has gone MIA
BTW as for who won the challenge for the most freebies, I think you will find that was Assassin_21 and it was either just under or just over 100 freebies in one image.
Blender Bridge script please?Export from Daz as an obj.
Default seem to work except for scale, change to 1%, and make sure axis are x = x, y = y, z = z.
in Blender: just make sure as per image - especially if wanting to return as a morph.
if it is for a morph; turn off all HD stuff, and set to base resolution.
But yeh, a script would be good.
Victoria express magic and who else compatible?http://www.daz3d.com/victoria4xprssnmagic
Looking at this product as a sort of end-all-be-all for expressions.
I've been using the expressions that came with an 'evil witch character' I got in a recent bundle purchase. Love it.
I try and avoid ANYTHING with a person's name in the title- even though I own the base model or starter pack.
(I just can never seem to get those to work properly)
This product http://www.daz3d.com/victoria4xprssnmagic
Doesn't name any other compatible figures. Usually it says works with Genesis 2 or 3 females etc...so I know how far the value spreads.
[edit: it says Victoria 4, Victoria 4 Elite]
This one, doesn't say anything about genesis or other figures so, it looks like (hope I get this right) like a MORPH for 1 single character. And will ONLY show up if I use that base model Voctoria as a starting point. Right?
So if I try and apply that to another genesis 2 or 3 character- it either won't work or I'll get unpredictable results.
Right??

Although this looks like sliders and dials, I kinda do prefer to look at faces with expressions on them already when going through the library, except as this product offers, I'd like to mix and match more easily. This looks like a wonderful purchase, but I don't wanbt to get it ajnd only have it work or apply to a single character = victoria.
So is this "safe" or is there a better 'pick a face' type expression generator that will work across more figures?
RULES FOR FREEBIE CONTEST AS OF JAN 1ST 2017 Change in Rules Plz Read! Why was the number of required free items reduced to 5?
If I remember correctly, the idea was to make the entrants be creative in their use of freebies.
Now it is true that Music made that rule 10(?) years ago, and he has stepped down.We even had mini contests over the most freebies in a render. (I forget who had the most, not me of course.)

As for increasing the paid items to 5, well, this is a freebie contest.Just a few thoughts.
I believe the changes were to encourage more people to participate in the contest. For you and me it is not difficult to come up with 10 items with associated links that work within the confines of the image or theme. Not all people are as vested in the freebie world as we are. Music changed the rules when he took over as well. When the contest went under his wing he allowed the morph packages to be no count. Before that it had to be all freebies no pay fors. I can't imagine how people could do that. The number of rigged free characters were pretty sparse.
That said, it can be interesting to try new things, we have a new coordinator and her wish is to make the freebie contest work again. I look at the rules as just a framework for me to build upon. Oh and I believe it was Assassin who is the current record holder. I think I remember something like 100 items in one of the images.
