  • New rig almost ready but wondering about the benefits for DS

A Ryzen 7 3700x with my already purchased not-so-long-ago gtx 1070ti. I plan to add DDR4 ram frm 16go to maybe 32. I know that, of course, the graphics card is central to this and that to make a real leap I'd need to get something more powerful than the 1070ti, but knowing that I am already using that same card on my current intel i72600K with 32go of DDR3, am I likely to still feel a really noticeable improvement in rendering speed with this new configuration?

  • ingenuities?

For a quasi-eliptical orbit, let's say you begin with the sun:

With the sun in the center of the scene, insert a target helper

    • Drag Mercury out to where you want it to orbit and parent it to the target helper
    • with Mercury parented, move the target helper slightly away from center
    • Add a new target helper and parent Mercury's target helper to that
    • Repeat these step for each planet you want to add, giving each planet's main (center) target helper a bit of rotation to spread them out in orbit
    • Begin having them orbit the sun by selecting all of the central target helpers and rotating them together at the last keyframe
    • Deselect the furthest planet's target and rotate a little more and repeat for each planet's target, so that Mercury (or the closest planet to the Sun) orbits a little faster than the next, but quite a bit faster than the last.

While not true-to-science, it still should look pretty cool, and have a slight off-center to each orbit. Using the target helpers, you can exaggerate the wobble if you wish

Use these same steps to set up any moons you want orbiting their planets

TIP: Never use glow channel for the actual surface of a planet. It's just wrong. The sun... definitely. Then set the sun to not recieve or cast shadows and place a bulb light in the center - make it really bright for a vast distance. Maybe start with 330 brightness and adjust from there.

This will give a fair representation of how it actually works, but sometimes we don't truly want how things really are, which is when we start enhancing things. But try setting the Sun's bulb light to do everything on its own and see what happens. Depending on the scale of things, I'd also give the bulb some soft shadow and find a place to render where a moon is casting a shadow onto its planet to adjust the radius of the soft shadow. The soft shadows should be set small enough to still allow a moon to cast a shadow on its planet, but large enough so it's not casting onto any other planets.

    Good luck with your experiment!

  • Show Us Your Iray Renders. Part VII

The Jocelyn Hair from the Teen Josie 8 bundles has always been strongly reminiscent to me of Serana from the Skyrim "Dawnguard" DLC. Not identical (Serana has four braids and a slightly different styling), but well within my capacity to morph and edit, so as she was by far my favourite of the various companion characters of the game (being central to the add-on's plotline helped her be a lot more developed than anyone else), so I've decided it was time to redo an old Source Filmmaker render of mine.

It's been a fairly lengthy process, because it's taken a lot of asset editing in Blender and Photoshop to recreate the character on G8F, but I'd like to believe the end result is reasonably faithful to the original character appearance, while also being a considerable step-up from the quality of the original game model. (The original game textures... aren't exactly great, particularly as they're not helped by some bad normal maps that shipped with the game making a lot of characters appear to have pixellated noses. In this case, I decided to use a modified version of Tasha 8's vampire materials).

  • It's Raining Men 2019 is Now Over! Winners Announced!

The scene gets busy with bounding boxes, so a lot of that stuff is set to Not show in 3d view. I work that way because it can really bog down OpenGL if I don't, but did some here so that you could see the main points more clearly. I know this doesn't get posted here, it's in the Entry thread, but I didn't want to get into details in there.

I make little accent light rigs for all of my prominent characters, monsters, villains, etc., and that's what those little dots of spot lights are all about. Some are just fill lights, some help to deal with dynamic hair under a linear workflow (Gamma Correction = 2.2) and the others are just rim lights to help outline the characters and get them to pop.

The cluster of white bounding boxes seen on the left are surface-replicated plants and trees onto some cliff terrain. I ended up not getting much of that in the final shot, but I need to feel that balance in the scene as I got everything together - which really made a difference. If I rendered without that stuff, it throws off the whole thing. I really love Carrara's terrain and plant modelers. Tweak away at sliders and/or import images and meshes - all of which can be made quickly in Carrara, and then, terrain and plants can also be converted into vertex mesh objects and further tweaked that way too - and both systems include special shader setups to help get really nice looking shaders even if we don't have any texture maps to use - but get even more versatile if we do (have maps). And then to have the ability to easily duplicate, replicate and/or surface-replicate them in an instant and have them render so smoothly... getting Carrara nearly ten years ago was a 3d art dream come true for me!

So once I get a nice 3d backdrop going on with plants and terrains like this, I turn off their view in 3D View, but they still render, even in Spot renders. It helps to remove clutter from my central focus and gives OpenGL much less to think about. Ryzen does care - it just renders them! So for this screenshot, I had to turn some of it back on so you could see it (noted by "Replicated Trees" in the screenie). Just in front of all of that we can see a small clump of terrain with actual individual Carrara plants all over it. By default it doesn't show the leaves in working view. This one is about six or seven main plants (including two dead ones, a few in poor health) and then I just duplicate them individually and plant them onto the terrain, scaling and rotating them as I go. This makes for a much more specific look and feel than random replication for more up-close, specific needs. Sometimes, like this time I do it just because I want to - no actual specific need was required.

Carrara's Realistic Sky atmosphere system is incredible. This render is only using it for time-of-day for the color of the sky and the atospheric density for depth but I usually also use the clouds and fog as well. In this, I'm using Carrara's Volumetric Clouds for clouds as well as fog.

I originally had a lot more of the cliffs and plant life in the scene, but felt it took too much away from what the image is really about - a hero being a hero.

Anyway, sorry for the long babble. I get that way when I'm excited and I rarely get a chance to spend this much time on a still render - so I'm just really glad that I could add something to the foreverness of this special activity! :)   (always fun to look through all of the renders of pervious contests!!!)

  • [Released] ManFriday's Mesh Grabber [Commercial]

Been working with large objects with very simple geometries. I have tried working in various modeling tools, with some success but the UV mapping frequently gets fragged going from modeler to Daz and back. So bought this tool and it's allowed me to fix in a few minutes what caused me hours of frustration and irritation - seems like a trapezohedron like shape shouldn't take so much work to make.

This took me off guard though:

    Strangely Large Mesh Grabber Controls

The prism I was working on has a size of 1000x1000x1 meters. I didn't see the mesh grabber controls get so strangely large until I scaled things up to that size. I would suggest this as a bug, since I expected the relative size of the mesh grabber controls to stay about the same no matter what scale of object I wanted to work with. I can still use it this way, but moving around at this scale (even zooming in and out) is very slow, so it does rather hinder trying to make the changes I wanted to make, although not completely.

Still far easier to use that deformers or trying to keep tabs on the primitives UV maps.

Looking to make a large arcology with a massive scale for a sci-fi story I'm working on, with the simple geometry I can get quite detailed without slowing my machine to a craw.

    Central structure of Vargr Kastl

Looking for something along these lines eventually, although that's only a fifth of it. The tiiny white sliver is the Burj Khalifa for scale.

Ok, we are in the "Character Converter from Genesis 3 Male to Genesis 8 Male" thread, but I think you are running "Character Converter from Genesis 8 Female to Genesis 3 Female"?  Then your error makes more sense about Genesis 3 not loading.  Adapting the instructions from before:

    • Open data/RiverSoft Art/Common/RSG8G3CharacterConversionConstants.dsa with a text editor.
    • Change sNewFigurePreset to be where your Genesis 3 Basic Female is.  Currently, it equals 'People/%1 %2/', where %1 is replaced with "Genesis 3" and %2 is replaced with "Female" by the script.  Let's fully enumerate the path like so (if this is right): "H:/3d/PoserFiles/Daz Studio/People/%1/%2"
    • Try again

  • ???? A ton of free stuff today. ???? NOT!!!

people asleep or at work at the time of the glitchy changeover honestly can be blissfully unaware and not every thread on the topic stays on the first page for long so even regular forum frequenters can miss them,

the ones not visiting the forum would presumably be pestering customer service so they should well and truely be aware of the problem.

I certainly don't judge people for not knowing or think them idiots, it's not user error in this case on the customers behalf.

Would it not make LOADS of sense for the changeover to be at DAZ MIDDAY instead?

yes it would since it has a worldwide customer base and that is when staff are at their computer desks, I can only presume the biggest volume of sales is to Americans and often during their lunchbreaks

Daz midnight is also pretty early for most of Europe and Africa, leaving plenty of the day for prices to settle down. Obviously it's more of an issue for those in Australasia and East or Central Asia.

I give up trying to figure out what is supposed to be a certain price, and what does what to what. Prices are varying from 51% for the New Releases, to 79%, 93% or 94%. for the other sections.  Just put one of today's New Releases in your cart and shop the sections. DO NOT assume what the section says is what you're going to get. I didn't use any codes (and the one from yesterday doesn't work, I tested it.)  This is as of 4:45am Central.

It was gorgeous here in the Pensacola area yesterday. Upper 70's and even around 11pm I was out walking in the back yard in a tank top!  Did 7 miles total yesterday. It's really warm right now too. Hope everyone is having a great lead-up to the holidays, although the East Coast is in for more rough weather I think I read.

Edit- It's 69 degrees right now at 5am! This is crazy for December, even for Pensacola.

  • [Released] Aeridian Heavenly Bodies, Planets & Asteroids [Commercial]

Sorry, no videos, but I think I can explain it clearly.

I called it a dome here in the thread, but not in the product description.  It IS a giant sphere; there is no groundplane or horizon.  I'm not sure why I used "dome" here, guess I thought that was easier to understand its usage.  You will need to make sure the default groundplane in Daz Studio is turned off in render settings, or obviously it will block the lower half of the solar system and any planets that are too low on the Y axis.  The solar system figure itself does not have a groundplane.

The background solar system is a massive sphere, and the sun is rigged around a central point, so the sun rotates within the solar system.  The sun has multiple parts for corona, haze, etc.  Sun is all Iray, which is the main source of light, and the stars are also iray emissive though the light they provide is generally too faint to light the scene.  It works fine in Iray because it basically blocks any environment lighting and instead uses the lighting from the sun.

It was specifically designed for creating floating space scenes (asteroids, space ships, etc) so that you don't have to worry about special camera angles.  The solar system prop is large enough that you can fly around in whatever direction or angle you want, and/or rotate the sun around to put the lighting where you want it, etc.

I strongly recommend using W-A-S-D to navigate with this set, or the "center object" button once you have a space ship/figure/etc in the scene due to the large size of the planets and solar system.

    Does that clarify it?

  • What do you wish was more popular?
    1. More modern clothing for men (both old and young)
    2. More cars/trucks with doors, hoods and trunks (boots and bonnets) that open and close.
    3. Roads and bridges, traffic lights, traffic signs, road signs (speed limits, no u-turns, etc), highways. this could be a construction set. These cars need places to go
    4. More buildings with doors that open and close (along with this, I really like Stonemasons US2 and US3 where you can add individual bldgs to a scene - I'd like to see more of this)
    5. Someone mentioned raiload engines and rolling stock - I'd like track to go with that.  The switches, turns, bridges, tunnels, train station (something like Grand Central or Cleveland Union Terminal

  • What do you wish was more popular?

Male clothing that is appropriate in a real-world office/business/school/casual/blue-collar/first responders/military settings for all seasons: all ages. (I would also like more for women, where I wouldn't have to tell them, they just violated the dress code as well, or they are at risk of being chewed up by a machine, or break an ankle.) Oh yeah, stop with the neon glow effect on 'stealth' 'sci-fi' 'military' clothes for women especially, that is a target focus only. I don't buy them at all, and generally make a hard pass on those PAs' work.

Age appropriate clothes for Teens, Pre-teens, Elementary ages.

Peasant or working class historical clothing. I buy what I can find in the store. But, it would be nice to have a broader spectrum, for other cultures: China, Japan, Korea, India, Africa, North-Central-Southern American First Nation Peoples, Australia, New Zealand...

Also would love more characters that represent those cultures that have not been seen that much.

Would really like some extreme cold clothing that men and women could wear hiking, camping, or just walking down a street when it is 20 degrees F and the wind is 40 mph, and there is ice and snow on the sidewalks still.

Now take those ideas, and forecaste where we might be in 50, 100, 200 years in styles, by looking back at how we changed the past 50, 100, 200 years in our history of clothing design and technology.

Kitchens that are designed that can actually be cooked in. That pay attention to cooking work flow, storage, and counters near refrigerators, stoves, sinks; instead of shoving everything together and leaving the refrigerator to occupy a wall by itself.

Same for a bathroom. Who wants a toilet without a cupboard next to it for necessities? And a place to lay down your cellphone, magazine, drink, or whatever? And a trash can next to it. And bathroom sinks should have counter space! Unless you are in a 5 x 8 tiny bathroom with no space for a decent layout.

    More critters.

Sci-Fi sets that also forecast where a real home, city might evolve from where we are now. How can the Green concepts change our daily lives and homes and transportation?

I was born and lived in downtown Chicago until I was almost 8 so we had plenty of professional & school teams there although I didn't pay any attention to any of that sports stuff although my dad would gather up a van full of neighborhood kids to go watch the White Sox play. I remember being in the Comiskey Park Stands and even then I remember the stadium poles supporting the upper decks getting in the way of my view of the field. It was always a night game and baseball fields lit up at night are surprising pretty, even to a 3 or 4 year old.  As we were in downtown Chicago the Chicago Cubs were too far away in north Chicago while the old Comiskey Park was not that far. I don't even know where the new Comiskey Park is!

Couple years later and in Jacksonville, Florida and back then it had no professional sports teams and it was a very small city then although the Woodland Acres area was very nice it was more suburb than city really. I was very surprised when Jacksonville, Florida, Tampa Bay, and Orlando, Florida all wound up with pro sports franchises of one type or another. The only sports team I remember from Jacksonville was the Sandalwood Saints and the only one from Orlando was the Walker Vikings. My friends and I would walk and ride bikes for miles and miles on the road shoulders as traffic on the roads was not near as constant then as now in Jacksonville & Orlando (even here in the 11K town I live in). That's a huge change in miles drive per vehicle now as compared to back then.

Our weather in the Central Appalachians is cloudy, cool at 49F, and occasionally rainy but oddly enough that is weather I really like. In this area between 35F and 55F, with clouds and occasional light rain is what it will be from usually mid-October to mid-March with one or two Indian Summers and one or two Snow Storms thrown in for good measure.

By the way, the Marvelous Designer Holiday/Black Friday sale has already begun and runs until 31 Dec 2019. And the sales price price is a hefty $100 more than last year. I guess they feel confident that if you really want Marvelous Designer but can't justify $490 you'll still buy for $340 instead of $240. I'm not so sure because my PC I have now wasn't fast enough to do the MD tutorials. I'll have me new PC build by next year and will try the tutorial again and see if it's something I might buy.

...and you have to be OK with rain and grey skies from October to May. No Hurricanes though and winters are for the most part milder with little ice or snow.
