The irony is that if you go to Comic-Con (or Wondercon or any comic convention) it's totally fine to sell all kinds of fan art and it's not only allowed but it's expected and encouraged. I've had fan art in the Comic-Con official catalog, sold in the official art show and sold at a booth. Never was there a legal issue. Whose trademark would we be violating? DAZ's or ViacomCBS, NBC Universal, and Disney's? I'm not going to purchase the fan art stuff sold here to make sure I don't break the Daz TOS but I've downloaded free fan outfits and morphs in the past and created my own textures for existing outfits and I have no qualms about it. If you search the internet, there are many fan outfits available for free for DAZ characters. So is DAZ paying ViacomCBS, NBCUniversal and Disney for the rights to use their IP? And if so, why isn't it legal for us to use it commercially? They are making more of a profit off of it than any of us artists would.

Fanart cannot be sold without a license unless it is a parody. Some sites collaborate with different brands (they promote fanart on their sites) because they connected with legal representatives and obtained permission for licenses. So there are legit venders at Comic-con who do have licenses to sell. This old 2018 article addresses the Comic-Con infringement issue.  This is an earlier one and there have been notices recently as well. They typically send them out  annually to cover their butts.

Thanks for the linked articles.  yes

If we're looking at this as a copyright thing and not a trademark thing, then the DMCA actually made it easier for entities to profit off infriging properties.  The law spells out a very specific process for reporting and removing infringing content, and by extension, companies are under no other obligation outside that process.  The rights holder must file a dmca takedown notice when they identify stolen works.  At that point, the person selling the content must remove it from sale, but the seller has a chance to respond and argue that their use does not violate the copyright.  Once the content is removed, that's the end of it and the seller generally keeps whatever they made off the infringing content.

This is what Amazon does.  A couple years ago, their kindle store was flooded with pirated manga.  No mater how much of it you reported, nor how many times it was reported, they took no action against it because the customers are not the rights holders and the on-site reporting function is not a DMCA takedown notice.  It took an email to one of the Japanese publishers alerting them of the problem.  Amazon takes down all the pirated works, gives the publishers an "Oops, my bad."  The law says they did their part, and they get to keep whatever they made off those titles.

Interesting article. I never actually read that before. This makes sense. Comic-Con would lose a lot by being sued but knows that individual artists are most likely not at risk of serious  legal action taken against them and would at most just get a cease and desist letter. Fan art is really just free advertising and it would put a big damper on the show if they tried to stop it. And comic book artists actually get hired based on how well they can depict existing characters. So if Comic-con is leaving it up to the artist's choice, why can't DAZ do the same? Just indemnify themselves and say if we get in trouble, it's up to us to deal with it?

However, in my opinion, it's not worth your time.

Last time I contacted support with a question like this, I was asking what morph was associated with the teen skin for Angela 9 (and I'd say it's a fairly reasonable request that when the product is half a character to ask what the other half of what you see in the promos is), but was rather bluntly told the information was not available.

Now, I should say I do appreciate that the CS team do have to make decisions about what requests actually merit being passed on - their agreement with vendors to act as the front line when it comes to support requests does require that. And I'm guessing that this probably means they're unlikely to pass on any queries or issues that don't actually directly relate to the product in question. Given that a lot of artists would have to take the time to look up their character formulae, a lot of combinations are not practical to share (a character may be made out of many different product packages, or involve customisation that cannot legally be shared) and a lot of artists deliberately seek to use customised characters to develop their own visual trademark and thus wouldn't share the recipes anyway, I can understand why it would be a request that the CS team would by default shoot down.

I'm generally philosophical about this though; the Angela Teen stuff was the first time I'd queried this in a long time, because I realise I already have access to more characters than I will possibly ever use, and have the potential to mix my own that can then be unique to me.

  • Daz will not create a UserData file even though the log says it did

I was moving my custom categories to a new computer’s DAZ installation, and found out my source computer has not been creating a UserData file since 2022.

After clicking “Export User data” the DAZ log states…

     “Writing User data file:  C:/Users/Greg-DS/Documents/DAZ 3D/Studio/My Library/Runtime/Support/UserData_1.dsx”

…but when the process is over, the file does not show up in the folder specified. I’ve tried several times. So, either the file is not being created, or it is being placed someplace else, but I have done a search of the entire computer for UserData and there is nothing since 2022.  Does anyone know what I can do to fix this?

I emailed:  info at bigbluehatcom today, but very recently discovered this forum to address some issues I'm having.
I have used the Daz Deals Pro extension since March 2022.  It was updated on March 7, 2024 and my membership has been extended to March 2025.

However, it no longer works in Daz3d, plus I have not received any email at all from Daz Deals Pro.

About a month ago, I had to change my Daz3d email.   That worked out fine for me, but my Daz Deals Pro never made the change from the old email address to the new email address.  This has been an ongoing headache because my old email address will soon be discontinued through my ISP.

I filed a ticket with Daz ZenDesk, but no response yet, in nearly two weeks.

It all worked perfectly before I changed my email address.

In a private message (or email) please send me your old address and your new address. I'll check what's going on and where the process could be stuck. A change of email address is complex: you need to register your new address in the addon, and you need to transfer your addon subscription to the new address.

If everything is working fine, you have already installed the updated version of Default Resources for DAZ Studio 4.22+. Check the Installed tab of DIM and see if it is listed there. Enter default in the filter. In ths screenshot I hovered the cursor over the product name to see the details.

No problem about the "his". Everyone seems to assume all forum users are male. I'm used to it. My name is Barbara (Barb).

  • Kneeling pose on Genesis 8 Female pushes calf into lower thigh

I have noticed that with a great deal of my genesis 8 models (and this might be an issue on others idk for sure), any sort of pose that has them sitting on their knees will usually push/jut their calves into their hamstrings to the point that it looks like a bit of an eye sore in resulting renders. The render I've attached below shows an example of this. I swear that I've seen a product on the Daz market that fixes this exact kind of issue but I can't for the life of me find it anymore on a search!

Does anyone know the product that I'm talking about and/or why this happens + how to fix it?

As far I understand it, fans can make fan art / fan fiction so long as we don't charge any money for whatever we make. However I wouldn't even get to that stage with these products. What makes me nervous is the fact that they have clearly replicated things from these movies/shows and are charging money for the products, all of which appear to be unofficial. It's a bit too much of a grey area for me, but I can imagine a time in the future where they might be asked to remove it all, so for me personally, I'll be staying away from them. Obvs I could be completely wrong but that's my perspective on it as a risk averse kinda fella :)

Personally I'm more concerned about products that depict real people who can be posed in uncompromising positions. Now people are doing that with AI, and DAZ renders still do look pretty fake but I care more about Katee Sakhoff's wellbeing than ViacomCBS, NBCUniversal and Disney's. I just hope the Daz artists only use characters based on real people in good taste.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. By 'they' I meant Daz, not us regular folk (e.g. ...the fact that the Daz store products have clearly replicated these things...). So my concern was about Daz eventually being asked to stop selling these (apparently) unofficial products, and potentially ruining the validity of anything we created with said products. And that's why I will steer clear of the products.

  • Seeking Help with Daz Rigging

There're some rigging tutorial in the store if you search by rigging but they're all pretty out of date, e.g. this one - https://www.daz3d.com/advanced-rigging-in-daz-studio-4-pro

As most of Daz characters were made on the rigged Genesis Base figure, there's less demand of how to rig a stand-alone figure in DS... Actually we're indeed short of comprehensive tutorials in terms of end-to-end rigging workflow. We refer to what we can get with self-learning and lots of experiments.

Furthermore, even for a simple rigging with a stand-alone character, the process in DS is pretty cumbersome though it's technically 100% doable. Rigging a Prop with hard surfaces will be much simpler.

Well on the contrary, it's easier to rig in Blender with some good add-ons. If I were you, I'd rather do it in Blender and bring the rigged character to other platforms...

I think that's a very good point you're making here - people truly often seem to forget that celebs are real persons, too, and can be hurt by what is done with their digital likenesses. But of course, as you also note, that train has already left the station for all of us with AI and deep fakes, I fear.
Concerning the copyrights, I feel the posters above are maybe not so much worried about the corporations' well-being but the artists and hobbyists using these assets, and then getting sued.
